GRC (Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete, for outdoor curtain walls), GRG (Glass Fiber Reinforced Gypsum, for indoor decoration), and UHPC (Ultra-High Performance Concrete, for high-end landmarks) differ significantly in composition, strength, and price. Qinglong Construction, with 28 years of full-chain experience across all three materials, provides a complete selection guide.
GRC is glass fiber reinforced concrete (the workhorse for outdoor curtain walls and shaped components); GRG is glass fiber reinforced gypsum (used for indoor ceilings and walls, water-sensitive); UHPC is ultra-high performance concrete (compressive 150 MPa+, for high-end slim shapes).
Outdoor shaped components → GRC. Indoor complex ceilings → GRG. Maximum slim and self-cleaning → UHPC.
When budget is tight, GRC covers 90% of indoor/outdoor scenarios — it's the universal choice.
GRC, GRG, and UHPC are three different fiber-reinforced inorganic composites:
The biggest misconception is treating them as the same material with different names. Using GRG outdoors is an accident-level error (gypsum softens on water contact). Using UHPC for ordinary indoor shapes is a budget waste. Bid documents must specify the material's full English name and execution standard to block substitution.
All three use fiber reinforcement, but the matrix and fiber differ:
| Material | Matrix | Fibre | Process |
|---|---|---|---|
| GRC | Sulphoaluminate cement + quartz sand | AR glass fibre (4%–5%) | Spray-up (predominant) |
| GRG | α high-strength gypsum | Glass fibre mesh / chopped fibre | Cast / pour |
| UHPC | Cement + silica fume + quartz powder | Steel fibre / high-strength PVA fibre | High-shear mixing + high-temp or ambient cure |
| Indicator | GRC | GRG | UHPC |
|---|---|---|---|
| Compressive strength | 40–60 MPa | 10–20 MPa | 150–250 MPa |
| Flexural strength | 15–25 MPa | 10–15 MPa | 25–40 MPa |
| Design life | 50 years | 30 years (indoor) | 50+ years |
| Density (t/m³) | 1.8–2.1 | 1.8–2.0 | 2.3–2.5 |
| Water resistance | Excellent | Poor (must avoid water) | Excellent |
| Min thickness | 12 mm | 10–15 mm | 5–10 mm (with steel fibre) |
| Price range (RMB/m², material + install) | 150–400 (flat) / 400–2000 (shaped) | 300–600 | 2000–5000 |
Myth: "GRC and GRG can be used interchangeably indoors." Reality: GRG is softer and more prone to damage in high-traffic indoor areas (lobbies, corridors). For these locations, GRC's harder surface is preferable even though GRC is heavier.
Myth: "UHPC is always better." Reality: UHPC's strength advantage matters only when the design requires slenderness, ultra-thin sections, or extreme durability. For typical facade work, UHPC is over-spec — you pay 3–10× more for marginal visual improvement.
Myth: "All three are equally easy to source." Reality: GRC is widely available in China; GRG has fewer qualified suppliers; UHPC has very limited domestic supply and most projects still import or use specific licensed producers.
| Scenario | Recommended | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Residential outdoor trim / cornice | GRC | Weather resistance + cost |
| Hotel lobby ceiling with curves | GRG | Lightweight, fine surface, indoor only |
| Museum facade signature element | UHPC | Slim, durable, self-cleaning surface |
| Commercial complex uniform facade | GRC | Standardization + cost |
| Theme park themed shaped components | GRC | Fire A grade + complex shape + cost |
| Airport interior acoustic feature | GRG | Acoustic + light + fine finish |
| Long-span slim bridge railing | UHPC | Slim section with structural integrity |
| Indoor feature column (high impact) | GRC | Hardness + impact resistance |

First-Class Waterproof/Anti-corrosion/Insulation and Second-Class Curtain Wall Engineering qualifications. Up to 60% openwork ratio, CNC mould precision ≤±0.5 mm, batch testing traceability, flexural strength up to 15–25 MPa, 28 years of GRC/UHPC/GRG/GRP full-chain experience.
Q: Can one project use all three materials?
A: Yes, and this is increasingly common in landmark projects: UHPC for signature slim elements, GRC for surrounding shaped context, GRG for interior ceilings. Each material is used where its properties are best leveraged.
Q: Which is most commonly substituted in low bids?
A: GRG is sometimes substituted for GRC in outdoor projects (lower cost but fails in 2–3 years). UHPC substitution is rare because UHPC itself is high-cost. Always require test certificates per batch and bid-document-specified material standards.
Q: Does Qinglong supply all three?
A: Yes — 28 years of full-chain experience in GRC, GRG, and UHPC. We provide unified technical consultation, mixed-material supply, and integrated installation.
