GRC Component Minimum Wall Thickness: Technical Boundary and Application Rules for 12 mm Thin-Wall Construction

GRC minimum wall thickness is typically 12 mm for spray-up process and 8 mm for premix — but 12 mm is the safe baseline for structural-grade panels. Below 12 mm, process defects (fiber balling, incomplete compaction) and strength penalties too severe to ignore. This article details the technical boundaries, manufacturing constraints, and application rules for thin-wall GRC.

Core Takeaways

  1. Spray-up GRC: minimum 12 mm (industry standard), practical floor 10 mm
  2. Premix GRC: minimum 8 mm (smaller fiber, denser compaction)
  3. Below 12 mm: only for decorative non-structural use, not for wind-bearing facades

Why 12 mm Is the Standard Floor

The 12 mm threshold comes from three constraints working together:

  1. Process minimum: spray-up equipment (chopper gun + roller compaction) cannot reliably deposit and compact below 10 mm without fiber balling or voids. 12 mm gives a 20% safety buffer.
  2. Fiber distribution: at 10 mm thickness, the 12–25 mm AR glass fiber bundles occupy a larger share of the section. Less effective matrix volume, lower strength per unit area.
  3. Handling strength: at 8–10 mm, the panel cannot safely bear its own weight during demoulding, transport, and installation without cracking. 12 mm is the minimum that survives typical handling with low reject rates.

Spray-Up vs Premix: Different Minimums

ProcessFiber formMin thicknessTypical application
Spray-up (主力)Continuous AR roving, chopped at nozzle12 mmCurtain wall panels, large-format components
Premix (precast)Pre-chopped short fibers (12–25 mm) blended into matrix8 mmDecorative trim, intricate mouldings, small parts

What Forces 12 mm

  • Wind load on facades: at 1.5 kPa design wind pressure, a 600 mm stud spacing requires a 12 mm spray-up panel to keep flexural stress below the proportional limit with safety factor 2.0.
  • Self-weight bending: a 1.2 × 2.4 m panel at 10 mm weighs ~50 kg; during demoulding and erection the bending stress at the lift points can exceed the panel's proportional limit. 12 mm gives 20% margin.
  • Local bearing at fixings: anchor bolts, dry-hang brackets, and inserts concentrate load in a small area. Below 12 mm, the bearing stress at the insert can crush the matrix or pull out.
  • Surface impact: thin panels are more vulnerable to impact damage during and after installation (gravel, hail, tools). 12 mm gives typical 5–10 J impact resistance vs 2–3 J at 8 mm.

Special Thin-Wall Applications (Below 12 mm)

Where 8–10 mm is acceptable:

  1. Non-structural decorative panels — interior feature walls, ceiling panels with no wind or impact load. Specifier should clearly mark "non-structural, decorative only".
  2. Curved decorative mouldings — small cross-section cornices, capitals, trim profiles where the section depth is small but the part is geometrically constrained.
  3. Backed panels — GRC bonded to a structural substrate (concrete, steel) where the substrate carries the load. The GRC is finish only.

Common Misconceptions

Myth: "Thinner is always cheaper." Reality: below 12 mm, the reject rate climbs sharply (5%–15% at 10 mm vs 1%–3% at 12 mm) due to handling damage. Net cost per square meter of acceptable panel is often higher at 10 mm than at 12 mm.

Myth: "12 mm is enough for everything." Reality: large panels (≥2 m span), high-wind locations (coastal typhoon zones, high-rise above 100 m), and impact-prone locations (ground floor, schools) often need 15–20 mm. The 12 mm floor is for typical low-rise residential and commercial facades.

Design and Specification Recommendations

  • Standard structural facade panel: 12–15 mm spray-up GRC.
  • High-rise or coastal facade: 15–20 mm.
  • Decorative cornice / trim: 10–12 mm premix.
  • Interior non-structural: 8–10 mm premix or hand lay-up, with non-structural marking.
  • Load-bearing architectural columns: 20–30 mm (and core-filled if needed).

Quality Control for Thin-Wall Production

  1. Thickness verification: ultrasonic thickness gauge at 5 points per panel (corners + center). Reject any panel with sub-thickness below 11 mm (for nominal 12 mm) at more than 1 point.
  2. Visual inspection: reject panels with visible fiber balling, voids, or surface delamination — these defects are more common at thin sections.
  3. Batch test: standard flexural test on 12 mm specimens per batch. Designates 18 MPa as typical acceptance minimum.

FAQ

Q: Can I use 10 mm GRC if the design wind pressure is low?
A: For low-rise sheltered facades with wind pressure ≤0.8 kPa and panel span ≤600 mm, 10 mm spray-up is acceptable with manufacturer agreement and documented testing. For anything more demanding, specify 12 mm minimum.

Q: Why does Qinglong not offer 8 mm panels?
A: 8 mm is below our quality-control floor for spray-up — the reject rate in our trials exceeded 15%. We can supply 8 mm in premix for decorative use, but we will not release it as structural.

Q: How does fibre content affect minimum thickness?
A: Higher fibre content (5%–6% by mass) can keep the same strength at slightly thinner sections because the fibre bridging compensates for less matrix. But the minimum process floor (12 mm for spray-up) is unchanged.
