GRC (Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete) is an inorganic composite material made by incorporating approximately 5% alkali-resistant glass fiber into a cement mortar matrix. This reinforcement boosts flexural strength from 2-4 MPa (ordinary concrete) to 15-25 MPa, enabling the production of thin-walled, complex-shaped, large-format architectural decorative components.
Key takeaways:
⚠️ Caution: GRC ≠ plaster lines (GRG), nor is it the same as the older "magnesium-oxide board." Low-priced "GRC" on the market using non-alkali-resistant fiber will powder and fail within 2-3 years.
GRC is composed of three parts: ① Matrix—low-alkalinity sulfoaluminate cement or ordinary Portland cement + graded quartz sand + water, with water-cement ratio controlled at 0.35-0.40; ② Reinforcement—alkali-resistant glass fiber chopped strands, dosed at 4%-5% of total mass (spray-process); ③ Admixtures—water reducers, retarders, polymers to improve workability.
Alkali-resistant fiber is the key. Ordinary glass fiber gets corroded in cement's alkaline environment. It must be coated with an alkali-resistant layer (zirconia content ≥16%). This is the prerequisite for GRC to last 50 years.
| Property | GRC | Ordinary Concrete |
|---|---|---|
| Flexural strength | 15-25 MPa | 2-4 MPa |
| Impact toughness | 10x higher | baseline |
| Density | 1.8-2.1 t/m³ | ~2.4 t/m³ |
| Min wall thickness | 12-15 mm | 60 mm+ |
| Fire rating | A1 non-combustible | A1 non-combustible |
| VOC emission | None | None |
The biggest advantage is thin-wall capability: a 12-15 mm wall meets facade panel strength requirements that ordinary concrete needs 60 mm+ to satisfy. GRC achieves A1 fire rating (GB 8624-2012), is non-combustible, and produces zero toxic smoke—the essential safety property that distinguishes it from EPS lines and resin-based decorative components.
GRC's irreplaceable scenarios fall into three directions:
Project validation from Qinglong (28 years of experience): The Algeria Ouargla Hotel's perforated GRC components have remained crack-free in high-temperature climate for many years.

Q: Is GRC the same as fiberglass-reinforced plastic?
A: No. GRC is a cement-based inorganic material with A1 fire rating; fiberglass (GRP/GFRP) is a resin-based organic material with significantly worse fire and weather resistance.
Q: Is GRC toxic?
A: No. As an inorganic cement-based material, it contains no formaldehyde, releases no VOCs, and is safe for both interior and exterior use.
