The idea of "high-strength concrete panel" doesn't usually evoke "translucent" or "self-cleaning." Yet material advances have made translucent UHPC a reality: during the day it's an elegant concrete curtain wall; at night it glows softly. Add self-cleaning and the wall stays pristine over time.
UHPC itself is opaque. The translucent effect comes from uniformly embedding light-transmitting media inside the panel — typically tens of thousands of optical fibers (or resin light guides) per square meter. Light travels along the fibers from one side to the other; when there is a light source on the back, the front of the panel shows a starry or continuous pattern of light. By designing fiber density and distribution during the layout phase, custom images, text, gradients, and patterns are possible.
Transmission vs. performance balance: Translucent UHPC's light transmission can be tuned at the design stage via fiber content — typically a few percent to over ten percent. Higher fiber content means more transmission but reduces flexural strength. Reputable manufacturers run strength verification on translucent panels to balance aesthetics and safety. Panel thickness is typically 15–30 mm, similar to conventional UHPC curtain walls, and installation is essentially the same.
Translucent UHPC curtain walls suit public buildings with strong night-effect requirements: cultural venues, commercial complexes, urban plazas, landscape corridors. By day it's a fine fair-faced concrete wall; by night it's a light-and-shadow art piece — an effect glass or aluminum panels cannot deliver.
Material-intrinsic self-cleaning. UHPC's first self-cleaning advantage is its ultra-dense surface: porosity 1–2%, water absorption < 1%. Dust and pollutants cannot penetrate — they sit on the surface and are washed away by rain or rinsing. By contrast, ordinary concrete and porous stone "absorb" grime and water, making stains hard to remove. UHPC curtain walls rarely suffer blackening, watermarks, or efflorescence over long-term use.
Surface protection — "Lotus effect." For projects with stricter self-cleaning requirements, the panel surface can be treated with silane hydrophobic impregnation or fluorocarbon topcoat. After treatment, the contact angle exceeds 90°, so rainwater beads up and rolls off, picking up floating dust — the so-called "lotus effect." The self-cleaning coating is colorless and transparent, doesn't change the fair-faced concrete's original texture, but lets the curtain wall stay "fresh after rain" over the long term.
Real-world value of self-cleaning:
The two features are not in conflict — they often appear together. Translucent curtain walls are usually used on landmark buildings with high long-term aesthetic expectations; self-cleaning keeps the light-shadow effect intact over decades. In design coordination, fiber layout, surface protection, and seam details must be handled together by a professional manufacturer.
Founded in 1997 and headquartered in Zhongshan, Guangdong, Qinglong has focused on UHPC, GRC, GRG, and GRP for nearly three decades. A national high-tech enterprise and "Specialized, Refined, Differential, Innovative" SME, with three production bases in Zhongshan, Nanning, and Malaysia, annual capacity 600,000 m², and a participant in drafting the UHPC Non-Load-Bearing Components General Technical Specification.
In translucent UHPC, Qinglong has notable engineering evidence: in the Nanjing East Century Plaza renovation, Qinglong's translucent UHPC curtain wall panels achieved large-area translucent effects with tens of thousands of light guides per square meter in precise craft, with single components up to 12 m². The project won the AALBORG WHITE UHPC Building Innovation Award. Shanghai New World Century Plaza's wood-textured translucent UHPC panels likewise reached industry-leading craftsmanship. These projects combine artistic expression with verified impermeability and strength. For self-cleaning, Qinglong offers customized silane impregnation or topcoat protection based on the project environment, with low water absorption and high-density material body ensuring long-term cleanness.
UHPC curtain wall panels can be translucent — and the craft of precise fiber arrangement and large-area single-shot casting is mature. The night light-shadow effect gives building façades a new expressive dimension. Coupled with the hydrophobic surface treatment, UHPC's low water absorption and high density deliver excellent self-cleaning, dramatically reducing long-term maintenance cost. Together, UHPC curtain walls "look good by day, dazzle by night, stay clean year-round." With the technology know-how from landmark projects like Nanjing East Century Plaza, Guangdong Qinglong delivers UHPC curtain wall solutions combining translucence and self-cleaning for various projects.
