Garden GRC Wall Panels — Installation & Fixing Methods Explained (JGJ/T 423-2018)

1. Three Mainstream Fixing Methods for Garden GRC Wall Panels

Garden GRC wall panels vary widely in size, shape, and load. Installation must be tailored. Three mainstream fixing methods are used in the industry:

Back-bolt dry-hanging. This is the most common fixing method for medium-to-large GRC wall panels (each panel over 2 m²). The principle: stainless steel back-bolts are pre-embedded or post-installed on the back of the GRC panel. The panel is connected via hangers to a hot-dip galvanized steel keel or aluminum keel, forming an independent load system.

Back-bolt dry-hanging has three core advantages: clear force paths (panel weight passes through hangers directly to the keel and main structure, no reliance on adhesion); deformation adaptability (hanger-keel connections include adjustment margin to absorb foundation settlement and thermal deformation common in garden structures); easy maintenance (single panels can be independently removed and replaced).

Embedded-part welding / bolting. For GRC wall panels with pre-embedded parts, embedded parts can be welded or bolted to the on-site steel skeleton during installation. This method offers high connection strength and fast construction speed — common in landscape wall projects with steel skeletons. Note: welding positions must be anti-corrosion treated and weld quality must meet design.

Direct expansion-bolt anchoring. Self-lightweight small GRC members (decorative lines, low-wall caps, flower planters, etc.) can use "embedded rebar + expansion bolt" direct anchoring to the concrete substrate. Each anchor point typically requires ≥ 5 kN pull-out resistance; field pull-out sampling inspection is recommended after installation. This method is not suitable for large panels — never "small horse pulling a large cart."

2. Five Key Installation Stages

No matter which fixing method, the following stages determine installation quality:

  1. Substrate treatment and recheck. Before installation, check the substrate is flat, solid, and dry. Concrete substrate must clear laitance and oil; if needed, apply interface agent. For substrates with dimensional deviation > 10 mm, level first. For stone and brick masonry common in garden projects, confirm sufficient anchor bearing capacity — never drill expansion bolts directly into loose masonry.
  2. Survey and layout. Pop out horizontal reference and vertical division lines per detail design drawings; determine keel and panel positions. Garden landscape walls often have curved or irregular boundaries, requiring higher layout precision — total station or 3D laser scan recheck is recommended.
  3. Keel system installation. GRC wall panel keels cannot be attached to insulation or plaster layers — they must anchor directly to concrete beams, columns, or solid walls. Main keel spacing typically ≤ 1200 mm; for spans over 3 m, a double keel system is recommended to distribute load. After installation, keels must be leveled and straightened, with verticality and flatness error ≤ 2 mm / 2 m, and anti-corrosion / anti-rust treatment.
  4. Panel placement and fixing. Install panels "from bottom to top, first middle then both sides." Use the slotted holes on hangers to fine-tune placement; never forcibly strike panels. Re-measure verticality and flatness every 2–3 panels; correct layer by layer to avoid error accumulation. Anchors must be tightened with a torque wrench to design values — too loose loosens; too tight may crack panels.
  5. Seam treatment. GRC expands and contracts slightly with temperature; seam width should be 8–12 mm. First fill with polyethylene foam rod, then apply silicone weather-resistant sealant compatible with GRC; sealant depth ≥ 6 mm. Do not pursue "tight seams" by compressing seam width below 3 mm — panels will press and easily crack edges under thermal expansion.

3. Special Considerations for Garden Scenarios

Compared with building curtain walls, garden GRC wall panels face special conditions that demand extra installation attention:

  1. Complex substrate conditions. Garden structures use diverse foundations (stone, brick, plain concrete); verify foundation strength before anchoring, and add concrete anchor strips when necessary.
  2. Stronger water-vapor erosion. Panels near ground or water features are subject to capillary water and splash water long-term; back-bolts, hangers, and keels should be stainless steel or hot-dip galvanized, with anti-corrosion spacers between connectors and panels.
  3. Many irregular shapes. Special stress calculation is needed for curved, perforated, cantilevered shapes; anchor point count and location cannot copy the experience from flat panels.
  4. Frequent human contact. Park and scenic-area landscape walls may be climbed or leaned on — installation robustness should carry higher safety reserves.

4. Guangdong Qinglong — Integrated Guarantee from Detail Design to Installation

Founded in 1997 and headquartered in Zhongshan, Guangdong, Qinglong has nearly three decades of focus on UHPC, GRC, GRG, GRP high-performance decorative building materials — from detail design, production, installation, and after-sales maintenance. A national high-tech enterprise, "Specialized, Refined, Differential, Innovative" SME, a participant in drafting GRC Building Application Technical Standard (JGJ/T 423-2018), with 50+ authorized patents.

For installation and fixing, Qinglong's differentiation is "front-to-back linkage": design — BIM team performs mechanical calculation on installation nodes and pre-assembly simulation at detail design stage, customizing fixing schemes per concrete, steel, or masonry substrate, with embedded part position deviation ≤ ±5 mm; product — GRC components leave the factory with pre-embedded parts and back-bolt holes precisely reserved, paired with salt-spray-tested 316 stainless steel anchors, avoiding field drilling damage to panels; installation — in-house certified installation team executes standardized work, with anchor points pull-out tested in batches for connection safety.

This "detail design → factory prefabrication → certified installation → after-sales maintenance" full-chain model has been verified across thousands of projects in China and abroad, including Wuhan Hanxiu Theater, Dongguan Women & Children's Activity Center, and Zhuhai Chimelong Marine Science Museum.

5. Practical Recommendations for Garden Project Owners

  1. Determine fixing method before panel size. Panel size and thickness should be designed together with the anchor scheme; avoid the passive situation of "panel already produced, hanging points insufficient."
  2. Require the manufacturer to provide node drawings and calculation documents. Reputable manufacturers provide anchor node detailing and stress calculation documents with drawings — the basis for construction and acceptance.
  3. No compromise on anchor material. Outdoor garden environments must use stainless or hot-dip galvanized connectors; ordinary iron parts corrode and expand, cracking panels.
  4. Archive concealed work. Keel installation and anchor tightening are concealed works; photograph and accept before panel closing.
  5. Prefer manufacturers offering installation services. Materials and installation under one responsibility — clear boundary, no blame-shifting.

6. Conclusion

Garden GRC wall panel fixing has no "one-size-fits-all" method. Back-bolt dry-hanging, embedded-part connection, and expansion-bolt anchoring each have their applicable scenarios — the core is targeted design based on panel specifications, shape complexity, and substrate conditions, with strict control of substrate treatment, keel installation, and seam treatment. With nearly three decades of full-chain engineering experience and a standardized installation system, Guangdong Qinglong delivers integrated solutions from panel to installation for various garden landscape projects, ensuring every GRC landscape wall is both attractive and secure.

Garden GRC Wall Panels — Installation & Fixing Methods Explained (JGJ/T 423-2018)
With their light weight, high strength, and freedom of form, GRC (glass fiber reinforced concrete) wall panels are being used more and more widely in landscape projects—they can be seen everywhere, from park landscape walls and courtyard partitions to artistic feature walls in theme parks. However, the final effect and safety of GRC wall panels depend 70% on materials and 30% on installation.
