How to Choose Between GRG and EPS Lines: A Clear Guide to Interior Decoration Scenario Matching

When selecting materials for interior decoration, GRG and EPS lines are an unavoidable comparison for many designers and contractors. Many people cannot tell the performance differences and applicable scenarios of the two apart, and it is easy to end up with a material that fails to meet project requirements. As a service provider with nearly 30 years of deep experience in custom-shaped architectural decoration materials, we draw on the implementation experience of nearly a thousand interior public building and commercial projects to offer a clear comparison and help you avoid selection mistakes.

First, let us compare the core differences between GRG and EPS lines in terms of basic properties. GRG, short for Glass Fiber Reinforced Gypsum, is a prefabricated decorative component made with special gypsum as the base and reinforced with alkali-resistant glass fiber, while EPS lines, short for expanded polystyrene foam decorative lines, use expanded polystyrene particles as the core raw material, usually finished with an outer anti-crack mortar layer. The most intuitive difference between the two lies in physical performance: GRG has a flexural strength of over 18MPa, strong structural stability after forming, and will not deform under load, whereas EPS lines have low density and weak strength, and are easily damaged or dented under external pressure. In terms of shape expressiveness, GRG can achieve integrated forming of any double-curved or complex custom shapes and deliver a seamless, smooth effect after on-site installation, while EPS lines, limited by their raw material characteristics, can only form simple straight lines and small-curvature shapes, and joints on complex curved surfaces are difficult to treat. In addition, in terms of environmental friendliness and weather resistance, GRG is an A1-grade non-combustible material whose fire performance fully meets the fire protection requirements of interior public buildings and releases no volatile harmful substances, whereas EPS lines are flammable; even with external flame-retardant treatment, they still release toxic smoke at high temperatures and fail to comply with fire codes for crowded places.

Next, let us break down the interior decoration scenarios each product suits, so you do not choose wrong. First, scenarios suited to GRG: The first category is interior curved ceilings and curved artistic decorative features in theaters, convention and exhibition venues, and high-end commercial complexes. Such scenarios often carry complex design requirements, and GRG's integrated forming capability can perfectly reproduce the design scheme. In several convention center projects we have served, GRG was used to achieve extra-large seamless curved ceilings, and the finished result fully matched the design expectations. The second category is shaped feature walls in high-end hotel lobbies and decorative components for distinctive spaces. GRG has high surface flatness and strong adhesion for subsequent paint and artistic texture finishes, and is not prone to cracking or peeling. The third category is public spaces with high fire protection and environmental requirements, such as public-area decoration in office buildings and interior components of cultural venues; GRG's non-combustible nature fully satisfies the strictest fire acceptance standards. EPS lines, by contrast, have relatively limited applicable scenarios: they are more suitable as a simple substitute for plaster lines in ordinary home decoration and for simple straight-line interior decoration in low-rise civil buildings. In such scenarios, where requirements for shape complexity and fire rating are not high, the lightweight, low-cost advantages of EPS lines can be brought into play, but be careful to avoid using them in crowded public buildings or scenarios with complex shape requirements.

Many people fall into the misconception that “cheaper is always better” when selecting materials. Here are several key selection points: First, do not look only at the purchase cost of the material itself; take a comprehensive view of installation costs and later maintenance costs. Although GRG costs more per square meter to purchase, its integrated forming means fewer installation steps and almost no later maintenance, whereas EPS lines are prone to surface cracking and damage over time, and the overall cost of repeated repairs is not low. Second, choose according to the project's fire protection requirements: under the current code for fire prevention in design of interior building decoration, non-combustible-grade decorative materials must be used in crowded public indoor spaces, and EPS lines can hardly pass fire acceptance for such projects. Third, if the design scheme calls for shaped or curved elements, give priority to GRG rather than forcing EPS lines into pieced-together solutions—the delivered result will deviate greatly from the design drawings and instead cause extra losses from project rework.

At present, mature GRG manufacturers in China mostly have nearly 20 years or more of industry experience. They carry out dedicated formulation optimization for interior decoration scenarios, and some leading enterprises have even participated in drafting national and industry standards related to GRG. Their production processes and quality control systems have been validated through mature project deliveries. When choosing a supplier, you can prioritize reviewing their past interior public building project cases to confirm their maturity in realizing complex shapes and in installation construction.

### FAQ 1. Can GRG be used for outdoor decoration? A: GRG's core base material is gypsum, whose water resistance and weathering resistance are limited, so it is better suited to indoor scenarios. For outdoor decoration, weather-resistant building materials such as GRC and UHPC are recommended. 2. Can EPS lines be used for ceiling shapes in large shopping malls? A: Not recommended. On one hand, the fire rating of EPS lines does not meet the fire protection requirements of crowded places such as shopping malls; on the other hand, large ceilings require components with sufficient structural strength, and EPS lines lack load-bearing capacity, posing safety hazards. 3. What is the standard delivery time for GRG components? A: The standard delivery time for GRG components in conventional specifications is 7-15 days. For large key projects, manufacturers can temporarily expand production capacity to guarantee the schedule.
