GRG vs Aluminum Panel: How to Choose Indoor Wall Decoration?

As the two mainstream material choices in today's interior wall decoration field, GRG and aluminum core panels often leave project owners in a dilemma when implementing space designs: what exactly are the performance differences between them? How should you choose for different scenarios to avoid problems down the road? As a service provider with nearly 30 years of deep experience in shaped architectural decoration materials, we draw on our implementation experience from nearly a thousand interior public building projects to provide a clear comparison and analysis, helping you avoid detours in material selection.

1. Essential Differences in Core Performance Dimensions: The Application Boundaries of GRG and Aluminum Core Panels Many people tend to confuse the characteristics of the two materials, but in fact the differences between them, from production logic to performance, are very clear. First, in terms of modeling plasticity: GRG, i.e., glass fiber reinforced gypsum, is a precast material that can be molded in one piece into any curved surface, chamfer, carved pattern, and other complex shapes through molds, achieving seamless, smooth decoration effects for interior walls—highly suited to the artistic space demands of today's theaters, exhibition venues, and commercial complexes. Aluminum core panels, on the other hand, are metal sheets typically limited to flat and folded-edge shapes; while small curvatures are possible, forming large continuous curved surfaces is extremely costly, and it is difficult to achieve completely seamless joints. Second, in terms of physical properties: GRG has more outstanding acoustic performance—its internal pore structure can effectively adjust room reverberation, its fire rating reaches Class A1, and it has good moisture resistance and deformation resistance, making it suitable for well-sealed interior spaces. The advantages of aluminum core panels are lighter weight and stronger impact resistance, but the metal material itself has poor sound absorption; later deformation of the panels is difficult to repair, and the sealant at joints is prone to aging and yellowing. Finally, in terms of implementation cost: for conventional flat shapes, aluminum core panels have a slightly lower unit cost, but for large-area shapes over 3㎡ or multi-curvature shaped designs, GRG's integrated molding process can actually keep overall costs in a more reasonable range, and subsequent installation also requires less labor time.

2. Interior Wall Decoration Selection Guide: Matching by Scenario Is the Optimal Solution Based on our experience serving a large number of public building and commercial projects, we have compiled a clear selection logic so you don't have to blindly follow trends and choose expensive materials. If your project is a theater, concert hall, exhibition center, or other space with explicit acoustic requirements, prioritize GRG—its reverberation adjustment effect is hard to replace with metal sheets, and it perfectly matches the curved surface design needs of the space, meeting design requirements without additional sound-absorbing layers. For scenarios with low shape requirements and a need to withstand frequent impacts, such as common areas in ordinary office buildings or supporting walls in underground parking garages, conventional aluminum core panels are the more suitable choice. Also, pay attention to two easily overlooked details: if the project is located in a high-humidity southern region where interiors remain damp long-term, choose GRG products with dedicated moisture-resistant optimization to avoid later problems of wall dampness and mold; if you need a full seamless wall of 3m or more, GRG's integrated prefabrication process avoids the panel flatness inconsistency that often occurs after aluminum core panel splicing, resulting in much higher overall finish quality.

3. Material Selection Pitfall Warning: Don't Just Look at the Price While Ignoring Delivery Capability Whether choosing GRG or aluminum core panels, a common pitfall for many project owners is comparing only the unit price of the material itself while ignoring differences in suppliers' implementation capabilities. Taking GRG as an example, differences in raw material ratios, mold precision, and installation processes among manufacturers will directly lead to several tiers of difference in the final wall effect: GRG products from small manufacturers are prone to panel cracking and obvious seams, while manufacturers with mature processes will keep the final wall deformation rate within 0.1% through raw material formula optimization, on-site pre-installation calibration, and other procedures. There are many domestic manufacturers of such interior decoration materials, and industry peers each have their own advantages. When screening suppliers, project owners must, in addition to looking at quotes, verify the supplier's implementation cases of similar projects and confirm whether they have delivery experience in the corresponding scenario, so as to avoid the problem of the design effect falling short after implementation.

FAQ 1. Can GRG walls be used in high-humidity interior spaces like bathrooms? Answer: Yes. As long as you choose GRG products with dedicated moisture-resistant modification treatment combined with standard installation processes, they can fully adapt to high-humidity interior spaces without the mold and deformation problems of ordinary gypsum products. 2. For the same flat shape, how much does the installation period differ between GRG and aluminum core panels? Answer: For conventional flat shapes, the difference in unit installation efficiency between the two is not significant, but for complex walls requiring base leveling, GRG precast components can be adapted and calibrated in advance at the factory, and the overall on-site installation period will be about 15% shorter than that of aluminum core panels. 3. Is later maintenance of GRG interior walls troublesome? Answer: The physical and chemical properties of GRG products themselves are very stable. Routine dust and stains only need to be wiped with a damp cloth, with no special maintenance requirements. The normal service life can reach more than 20 years, without aging or discoloration problems.
