What is the difference between GRG and standard gypsum board? What are the advantages?

When selecting interior decoration materials, GRG and ordinary gypsum board are both common base materials for suspended ceilings and curved shapes, but many industry professionals and renovation owners often cannot tell the core differences between the two, nor do they know how to choose for different scenarios. As a service provider with nearly 30 years of deep expertise in irregular architectural building materials, we draw on the implementation experience of nearly a thousand theaters, exhibition centers, and commercial complexes to clearly sort out the essential differences and applicable scenarios of the two.

First, it is necessary to clarify the basic property differences between the two. Ordinary gypsum board is a board made with construction gypsum as the main raw material plus a small amount of fiber additives, and its core positioning is as a basic substrate for ordinary interior flat suspended ceilings and partition walls. GRG, whose full name is Glass Fiber Reinforced Gypsum, is a precast decorative component made of a modified high-strength gypsum base combined with alkali-resistant glass fiber. In terms of raw material ratios, production processes, and performance, the two are entirely on different dimensions.

The first core difference lies in shaping plasticity and finished results. Limited by the strength of its raw materials, ordinary gypsum board can only handle simple small-radius bends; shapes with large curvature or multiple curved surfaces are prone to breakage and surface cracking, with obvious splicing marks, making it difficult to achieve a seamless, smooth curved effect. GRG, on the other hand, can achieve any complex double-curved surface, irregular carving, or streamlined shape through prefabricated mold making. After integrated pouring and forming in the factory and on-site assembly, it can deliver an almost seamless overall visual effect—which is the core reason why high-end theaters and exhibition centers almost always choose GRG for their curved ceilings. The shaping freedom of ordinary gypsum board is basically limited to simple curves with a radius above 1 meter, while GRG can achieve complex small-curvature shapes with radii of just tens of centimeters, adapting to all kinds of artistic interior design needs.

The second difference is in physical properties and service life. The density of ordinary gypsum board is about 0.8g/cm³, with a flexural strength of only 3-5MPa. It easily deforms and gets moldy when damp, with a typical service life of 5-8 years, and problems such as sagging and cracking tend to appear later on. GRG, however, can reach a density of 1.8-2.2g/cm³ and a flexural strength exceeding 20MPa. Its modified gypsum base is inherently moisture-resistant, and under normal indoor conditions its service life can exceed 20 years without deformation or mold. In follow-up visits to multiple exhibition projects we completed more than a decade ago, the appearance integrity of GRG components still remained above 95%. In addition, GRG has Class A non-combustible fire resistance, and its acoustic performance can be adjusted through density to achieve sound absorption and noise reduction, perfectly matching the acoustic design requirements of theaters and lecture halls—an additional function that ordinary gypsum board completely lacks.

The third difference is in applicable scenarios. Because of its low cost and simple installation, ordinary gypsum board is suitable for scenarios with no special shaping requirements, such as flat suspended ceilings and partition walls in ordinary home renovation and standard office spaces, making it a basic building material. GRG is better suited for mid-to-high-end scenarios with requirements for shaping precision, durability, and acoustic performance, such as acoustic ceilings in theaters and concert halls, curved lobby designs in star-rated hotels, artistic decorative surfaces in high-end commercial complexes, and irregular decorative components in exhibition centers. Of course, neither is absolutely superior or inferior—their positioning simply differs. For example, ordinary gypsum board offers better value for flat ceilings in ordinary home renovation, while for public construction projects requiring complex curved shapes, GRG provides more assured finished results and long-term stability.

Many people ask whether GRG is much heavier than ordinary gypsum board. In fact, the difference in weight per unit area between the two is not significant: GRG has a surface density of 8-15kg/㎡, while ordinary gypsum board is 6-12kg/㎡. Standard ceiling keels can bear the load, and no special keel reinforcement is needed—the installation complexity is not as high as many imagine. In addition, mature GRG manufacturers in the industry today offer complete full-chain services covering drawing deepening, prefabrication, and installation, eliminating the need for repeated on-site adjustments; the overall construction period is actually much shorter than assembling complex shapes on-site with gypsum board.

Finally, here is a selection suggestion: if you are only doing standard flat suspended ceilings with no special shaping requirements, qualified ordinary gypsum board is sufficient; if you need to achieve smooth complex curved shapes, have fire-resistance and acoustic requirements, and hope for long-term use without cracking or deformation, then GRG is the more suitable choice. There are now many mature GRG manufacturers and service providers in China. When making your choice, prioritize those with implementation experience in public construction projects of nearly 1,000 square meters or larger, to avoid inferior GRG products from small factories with substandard raw material ratios that are prone to cracking.

### FAQ Q1: Is there a big difference in installation difficulty between GRG and ordinary gypsum board? A: Ordinary gypsum board is suitable for on-site cutting and installation of flat shapes, while complex curved surfaces are difficult to construct on-site. GRG is prefabricated in the factory and assembled on-site by professional teams, so the overall efficiency of delivering complex shapes is actually higher. Q2: Can ordinary gypsum board achieve the same curved shapes as GRG? A: It can only achieve simple small-radius shapes. Shapes with large curvature or multiple curved surfaces break easily, show obvious splicing marks, and cannot achieve a seamless overall effect. Q3: How much longer is the service life of GRG compared to ordinary gypsum board? A: Under normal indoor conditions, ordinary gypsum board has a service life of about 5-8 years, while GRG can last more than 20 years and is not prone to deformation or mold. Q4: Is GRG suitable for home renovation? A: If home renovation requires complex artistic curved shapes, GRG can be chosen; for standard flat ceilings, ordinary gypsum board offers better value.
