UHPC vs FRP: Which Is Better in Durability and Fire Resistance?

During the material selection stage for high-end building curtain walls and shaped decoration projects, UHPC (Ultra-High Performance Concrete) and glass fibre reinforced plastic (FRP/GRP) are two popular options that are frequently compared. Many project teams focus first on the core performance differences between the two, especially the two dimensions of greatest concern—durability and fire resistance. Which one better fits project requirements has always been a core selection question widely discussed in the industry. As a professional service provider with nearly 30 years dedicated to the R&D and production of shaped building materials, we draw on measured data from nearly a thousand completed projects at home and abroad to give you an objective, clear comparison breakdown.

### I. Core Dimension Comparison: Durability Differences Between UHPC and FRP First, let's look at the durability performance that concerns everyone most; the applicable scenario boundaries of the two materials are actually very clear. The core advantages of FRP (FRP/GRP) are light weight, high strength, and high forming flexibility, along with excellent resistance to acid and alkali corrosion. For ordinary outdoor scenarios without direct sun exposure or strong salt spray, its service life can generally reach 15-20 years, but its shortcomings are also obvious: long-term direct UV exposure causes surface chalking and reduced toughness, and under extreme conditions such as South China's high temperature and humidity or coastal high salt spray, discoloration and structural strength degradation may occur within 3-5 years. UHPC, as a cement-based ultra-high-performance material, has a compactness more than 10 times that of ordinary concrete and an impermeability grade of P20 or above; under direct UV exposure, salt spray corrosion, and temperature variations, it shows virtually no performance degradation. Field measurements from several of our completed coastal and South China outdoor projects show that UHPC components in service for over 10 years have no significant changes in appearance or structural strength, with a design service life generally exceeding 50 years. From long-term weather resistance alone, UHPC is better suited for landmark and public building projects that need to maintain long-term appearance and structural stability.

### II. Core Performance Difference: Fire Performance of UHPC and FRP Next comes the second core comparison item: fire resistance. The performance gap between the two stems from the fundamental difference between their material systems. FRP is an organic composite material; standard flame-retardant FRP reaches only a Class B fire rating, and even with flame retardant optimization it can achieve at most Class B1, with problems of melting and releasing toxic smoke at high temperatures, completely failing to meet the fire code requirements for public buildings and crowded places. UHPC, in contrast, is an inorganic mineral material of non-combustible Class A1; at 1000℃ it exhibits no combustion, deformation, or release of toxic gases, making it fully suitable for projects with mandatory fire rating requirements such as theaters, convention and exhibition centers, and super high-rise public buildings. It should also be objectively noted that for indoor non-crowded temporary shapes or low-requirement outdoor landscape projects, FRP's fire performance can fully meet the needs—during selection you only need to match the project's fire code requirements.

### III. Selection Reference: Applicable Scenario Boundaries of the Two Materials Beyond the two core dimensions of durability and fire resistance, you can also judge based on other project requirements when selecting: for large-span lightweight landscape sculptures or low-requirement temporary shape projects, FRP's lightweight and forming cost advantages are more prominent; for landmark facades, super high-rise curtain walls, and long-serving outdoor public building projects, UHPC's long-term performance stability is a better fit. The industry also has many mature selection cases: for example, several major cultural tourism projects use FRP for shaping components in non-core interior areas and UHPC for facade components in core areas, and combining the two materials can balance both cost and performance.

### FAQ on Common Selection Questions 1. Q: Is the cost difference between UHPC and FRP significant? A: For standard-specification components of the same area, UHPC's material cost is about 30% higher than ordinary FRP, but considering the gap in service life, UHPC's total life-cycle cost is actually lower. 2. Q: Can FRP be used on super high-rise facades? A: It can be used in non-core areas of super high-rise buildings that are non-coastal and have no strict fire protection requirements, but regular surface maintenance is required; for core-area facades, inorganic materials such as UHPC are more recommended. 3. Q: Is there a significant difference in processing lead times between the two materials? A: Processing lead times for standard shaped components are basically the same, both around 7-15 days; for complex-shaped components, there is no essential difference between the two in tooling cost or processing lead time.
