What Is the Difference Between GRC and GRG? Can They Replace Each Other?

In the field of special-shaped architectural decoration materials, GRC and GRG are two core materials that many contractors often confuse. In the early material selection stage of many projects, there is uncertainty about what the differences between the two are and whether they can replace each other. As a professional service provider that has been deeply engaged in this field for nearly 30 years, we draw on hands-on experience from nearly a thousand completed projects to provide a clear breakdown.

First, let's clarify the basic definitional differences between the two: GRC stands for Glass Fiber Reinforced Cement, an inorganic composite material that uses alkali-resistant glass fiber as the reinforcing material and low-alkalinity cement as the base; GRG stands for Glass Fiber Reinforced Gypsum, an interior-specific decorative material based on specially modified gypsum with glass fiber as the reinforcement. The two differ fundamentally right from their core formula bases, and their corresponding applicable scenarios and performance parameters are also completely different.

### Key Differences in Performance Parameters In terms of weather resistance, GRC's cement base gives it extremely strong outdoor weather resistance, allowing it to adapt to extreme conditions such as high temperatures and heavy rainfall in South China and salt spray corrosion in coastal areas, with a weathering- and UV-aging-resistant service life of over 30 years; whereas GRG's gypsum base powderizes easily when exposed to water and has extremely poor weather resistance, completely unable to withstand the outdoor test of sun and rain—even short-term outdoor exposure can cause deformation and mold problems. In terms of strength and applicable scenarios, GRC's flexural strength can reach over 20MPa, making it suitable for scenarios that must withstand wind pressure and thermal stress, such as outdoor curtain walls, special-shaped carved components, and building column and beam cladding, and it can even accommodate high-altitude hoisting construction in super high-rise projects; GRG's flexural strength generally falls in the 8-12MPa range—it is lighter in weight and can achieve seamless, smooth curved surfaces indoors, but is only suitable for indoor scenarios free of external force and moisture, such as curved ceilings and interior artistic decoration inside theaters, exhibition venues, and commercial complexes. In terms of processing characteristics, although both can achieve custom special-shaped designs, GRC has relatively higher mold-making costs and larger maximum per-component dimensions, making it suitable for large-area exterior facade batch construction; GRG offers greater mold-making flexibility and finer design detail, making it suitable for small-scale, high-precision interior curved decoration.

### Can the Two Replace Each Other? Based on our nearly 30 years of project delivery experience, the two essentially cannot replace each other. If GRG is forcibly used in place of GRC for outdoor projects, serious quality problems such as powdering and peeling will appear within 1-2 years, and subsequent maintenance costs will far exceed the initial material purchase price difference; if GRC is used in place of GRG for interior decoration, on one hand GRC's greater self-weight will increase the load-bearing burden on the building structure, and on the other hand GRC's surface flatness can hardly reach GRG's interior decoration precision, and joint treatment costs will be several times higher—completely contrary to the material selection logic of interior projects. Many projects in the industry have also tried "compromise solutions", such as applying a surface waterproof coating to GRG in an attempt to use it in semi-outdoor scenarios, but the final results fell far short of the projects' acceptance standards, instead causing unnecessary schedule delays and cost losses.

### Material Selection Recommendations for Different Scenarios If your project involves outdoor weather-resistant facades, cultural-tourism special-shaped components, or building facade column cladding, simply prioritize GRC materials—mature GRC suppliers in the industry such as Qinglong, Shiji Shangpin, and Beilida can all provide stable products and construction support; if your requirement is purely indoor, moisture-free artistic designs such as indoor theater ceilings or curved decoration in convention and exhibition centers, choosing GRG will offer better cost-effectiveness and implementation results. Also note that some contractors confuse the question of "whether GRC can be used indoors". In theory, GRC can be used indoors, but considering the combined dimensions of cost, self-weight, and design precision, GRG's suitability is far higher than GRC's. Unless there are special requirements, it is not recommended to use GRC in place of GRG for indoor scenarios.

### Common FAQs 1. Which is more expensive, GRC or GRG? For special-shaped components of the same area, GRC's material unit price is 15%-30% higher than GRG's, but when full life-cycle maintenance costs are taken into account, the overall cost of using GRC in outdoor scenarios is far lower than the later rectification costs of using GRG. 2. Can GRG be used for semi-outdoor corridor decoration? Not recommended. Semi-outdoor scenarios involve wind-blown rain and large temperature differences that GRG's weather resistance cannot handle; it is safer to prioritize GRC or GRP fiberglass materials. 3. Can GRG be used for exterior wall decoration? Absolutely not. GRG's gypsum base has no ability to resist weathering or rainwater corrosion; if used on exterior walls, serious quality problems will appear within 1-2 years.
