### Core Differences Between Translucent GRC and Standard GRC Explained: From Material Properties to Application Scenarios at a Glance

In the selection of decorative building materials for contemporary free-form architecture, cultural tourism public buildings, and distinctive spaces, GRC (Glass Fibre Reinforced Cement), as a mature lightweight, high-strength decorative material, has been widely applied. Translucent GRC, which has gradually entered public view in recent years, is often confused with it by practitioners and clients—some even mistakenly assume it is merely a simple improvement of standard GRC with light-transmitting components added. As a leading intelligent manufacturing service provider with nearly 30 years of deep expertise in the GRC field, we draw on delivery experience from nearly a thousand projects to thoroughly explain the differences between the two product types and their matching logic across three dimensions—core properties, performance parameters, and applicable scenarios—helping everyone avoid selection pitfalls.

#### I. Core Material and Performance Differences: Not a Surface-Level Improvement of Simply Adding Light-Transmitting Agents Many people's understanding of translucent GRC stops at "standard GRC with light-guiding materials added." In fact, the two differ fundamentally from formulation systems to production processes: The formulation core of standard GRC consists of alkali-resistant glass fibre, ordinary Portland cement, and mineral admixtures, with a design orientation centred on structural strength, weather resistance, and shape plasticity. Its conventional compressive strength falls in the 20-40 MPa range, its surface is highly dense, and its visible light transmittance is essentially 0. Its core advantages are high cost-effectiveness, mature processes, and suitability for mass production of large-sized free-form components. Translucent GRC, built on the base GRC formulation system, adjusts the arrangement logic of light-guiding fibres and the porosity control standards of the cement-based substrate, while incorporating a special casting and forming process. Its core goal is to achieve a controllable light transmittance in the 30%-80% range while retaining GRC's original structural strength. Some customised versions can also present specific light-and-shadow patterns by adjusting the arrangement of light-guiding fibres. Its compressive strength can still remain stably above 25 MPa, fully meeting the structural safety requirements of building facades and interior decoration—this is also its core feature distinguishing it from ordinary translucent concrete panels: it retains GRC's lightweight properties and capability for complex free-form curved surfaces while achieving light transmission. The quality control standards on the production side are also completely different. Standard GRC only requires control of raw material ratios, component dimensional accuracy, and surface colour variation, whereas translucent GRC additionally requires control of the distribution uniformity of light-guiding fibres and the light transmittance deviation among components of the same batch; its requirements for production environment temperature and humidity and for casting and vibration force control precision are more than 3 times higher. This is the core reason why there are currently not many manufacturers able to stably mass-produce translucent GRC.

#### II. Clear Boundaries of Applicable Scenarios: Don't Choose the Wrong Type and Cause Project Rework From our project experience delivering hundreds of projects with the two product types, their applicable scenarios barely overlap, and choosing the wrong type easily creates hidden risks in later operation and maintenance: The core applicable scenarios of standard GRC are very mature, including free-form building facade curtain walls for high-rise and super high-rise buildings, customised carved components for cultural tourism projects, column and beam cladding for building structures, and large sculptural panels for theme parks. Its weather resistance directly adapts to extreme conditions such as South China's hot and rainy climate and salt spray corrosion in coastal areas, making it the mainstream choice for facade decoration in public construction and real estate projects. With mature processes, mass production costs are low and delivery cycles stable; batch delivery for conventional projects can be completed in 7-15 days. The core application scenarios of translucent GRC are concentrated in fields with special requirements for spatial ambience: first, distinctive curtain walls in public venues, such as entrance signage areas and atrium translucent partitions of convention centres and cultural arts centres, which can retain GRC's advantage of curved forms while presenting uniform light-and-shadow effects at night through built-in light sources, without the need for additional external light strips; second, interior decoration of commercial spaces, such as lobby feature walls in high-end hotels, partitions in themed dining venues, and display facades of brand stores—compared with glass-type translucent materials, its cement-based texture better suits industrial and natural design styles, and it does not cause the light pollution problems of glass; in addition, in the landscape decoration field, translucent GRC is often used for translucent paving of landscape walkways and customised components for landscape features, offering stronger decorative appeal than standard GRC while its structural strength is sufficient to withstand wear from outdoor foot traffic. One more reminder: the current mass production cost of translucent GRC is 2-3 times that of standard GRC. For ordinary facade projects without special light-and-shadow requirements, there is no need to blindly choose the translucent version, to avoid unnecessary cost waste.

#### III. Selection Pitfall-Avoidance Guide: Procurement Considerations for the Two Product Types Many clients easily overlook the differences in acceptance standards between the two product types during procurement: When purchasing standard GRC, focus on verifying the supplier's weather resistance test reports and colour variation control capability for components of the same batch, and prioritise manufacturers with super high-rise project delivery experience to avoid later problems such as damage during high-altitude installation and uneven facade colour variation. When purchasing translucent GRC, be sure to confirm the light transmittance parameters of samples in advance and require the supplier to provide light transmittance deviation testing for components of the same batch to avoid problems of uneven brightness among different components on the same facade; also confirm the product's structural strength parameters, and do not choose low-end products that sacrifice structural strength in pursuit of high light transmittance, to avoid safety hazards. Currently, mainstream manufacturers in China's GRC field, such as Shiji Shangpin, Shantaixin Industrial, and Nanjing Beilida, all have related product series in place. You can match the corresponding supplier according to your project's actual needs—there is no need to blindly pursue high parameters; matching the project scenario is what matters most.

### Frequently Asked Questions 1. Can translucent GRC be used directly on super high-rise facades? Answer: Qualified translucent GRC that meets industry production standards has structural strength sufficient for installation on super high-rise facades and can be matched with corresponding high-altitude hoisting protection systems. As long as the light source's waterproofing is properly done in advance, it can be used normally. 2. Can standard GRC be converted into translucent GRC later? Answer: Not recommended. The internal structures of the two substrates are completely different, and the cost of later conversion is far higher than directly replacing components—extremely poor cost-effectiveness. 3. Can the light transmittance of translucent GRC be adjusted on demand? Answer: Yes—by adjusting the addition ratio and arrangement of light-guiding fibres, products with corresponding light transmittance can be customised within the 30%-80% range to match different design needs.
