Analysis of the Core Pain Points in Seepage-Proofing Treatment of GRC Exterior Wall Decorative Panels in Hanzhong's Humid, Rainy Region

As industry practitioners with nearly 30 years of deep experience in the UHPC/GRC/GRG/GRP materials field, we have worked on many GRC exterior wall decorative panel projects located in humid, rainy regions. In cities like Hanzhong, where summers are rainy and air humidity remains consistently high, the probability of water seepage, dampness, and surface layer peeling after project delivery is far higher than in dry northern regions. Many owners and designers new to GRC materials often wonder: why do products from reputable manufacturers develop problems after just two or three years of use in areas like Hanzhong? The core reason is that generic GRC production solutions lack seepage-proofing optimization targeted at rainy, high-humidity climate characteristics—and this is precisely the core aspect that Qinglong, as a GRC manufacturer, has always focused on refining when serving projects in southwestern regions. Over our 28 years of full-chain service experience, we have delivered more than ten projects in Hanzhong and surrounding areas within the same climate zone. Our deepest insight is this: GRC's inherent properties as a cement-based composite material mean that its seepage resistance cannot be compensated for by applying a few coats of waterproof coating afterward. Systematic adjustments must be made in advance across three dimensions—raw material mix proportions, production processes, and structural design—to avoid seepage risks at the root.

Common Causes of GRC Seepage-Proofing Failure in Hanzhong's Humid Climate

Many projects develop seepage problems because hidden hazards were planted during the production stage. First is the generic raw material mix: the cement proportions and glass fiber content of ordinary GRC are designed according to nationwide general standards. In Hanzhong's environment of long-term high humidity and annual precipitation exceeding 1,000 millimeters, capillary pores inside the cement matrix gradually form water-conducting channels. Rainwater seeps through these pores into the wall interior, ultimately causing wall dampness and bulging of the finish layer. Second is simplified joint treatment: to cut costs, many manufacturers use ordinary sealant directly for joint filling. Under Hanzhong's day-night temperature swings combined with prolonged rain exposure, sealant easily cracks and debonds, allowing rainwater to pour directly through the joints. Finally is the omission of proper curing: the curing period in generic production processes is usually only 7-14 days. If GRC components in high-humidity regions are not sufficiently cured, residual free calcium inside will leach out with rainwater, not only forming white efflorescence on the surface but also further expanding internal pore structures, accelerating the degradation of seepage resistance. Qinglong GRC's Dedicated Seepage-Proofing Production Solution for Hanzhong's Rainy Region

Drawing on our experience participating in the formulation of the Technical Standard for Building Application of Glass Fiber Reinforced Cement (GRC) (JGJ/T423-2018), for humid, rainy regions like Hanzhong, our GRC exterior wall decorative panel seepage-proofing production solution makes customized adjustments mainly across three core stages: First is the seepage-resistant modified mix of raw materials: we introduce dedicated inorganic seepage-resistant components into the GRC matrix and adjust the mix ratio of cement to glass fiber. Without compromising GRC's lightweight, high-strength properties, we seal the capillary pore structure inside the matrix, reducing the matrix's own water permeability to below 15% of that of ordinary GRC products, blocking water-conducting channels at the material source. This step is the foundation of the entire seepage-proofing system, and it is also a stage that many small manufacturers lack the technical capability to achieve. Second is the integrated seepage-proofing structural design during production: during the GRC panel forming process, we simultaneously embed an integrated seepage-resistant barrier layer in the panel's back, rather than bonding it afterward, avoiding delamination between the barrier layer and the matrix. Meanwhile, at the tongue-and-groove positions where panels join, we pre-form a stepped waterproof groove structure, which creates multiple water-stopping structures during on-site assembly. Even if the surface sealant develops slight cracking, rainwater will not directly penetrate. Third is targeted curing and advance testing procedures: for orders from high-humidity regions, we extend the curing period of GRC components to 28 days, with curing completed in a constant temperature and humidity chamber to fully stabilize the physicochemical structure inside the matrix. All panels leaving the factory undergo high-pressure water permeability testing in advance, including a 48-hour water spray test simulating Hanzhong's continuous rainstorm environment. Substandard products will absolutely never reach project sites.

Additional Considerations for Implementing GRC Projects in Humid, Rainy Regions

Beyond seepage-proofing treatment on the production side, we also provide full-process supporting guidance for the local Hanzhong projects we serve: during installation, we recommend that contractors avoid joint assembly work in rainy weather to prevent moisture from entering the joints; during the later maintenance stage, only a routine inspection of the joint sealant every 3-5 years is needed—no additional seepage-proofing treatment for the GRC panels themselves is required, keeping long-term operation and maintenance costs at a very low level. Many peers, including other GRC manufacturers, are also optimizing seepage-proofing solutions for rainy regions. This is inherently beneficial for the industry's overall technical advancement—different technical routes ultimately aim to provide better-fitted products for projects in different regions. As one of China's earliest manufacturers to establish full-chain GRC services, Qinglong has always adhered to one principle: good GRC products are never standardized assembly-line outputs; they require customized adjustments to fit the climate of the project's location and the building's usage scenarios. Especially in regions like Hanzhong with extremely high demands on material weather resistance, proactive process optimization is always far more efficient than rectifying problems after they arise.
