Sansha Island-Specific GRC Exterior Wall Panel: Optimized Formulation Production for Curtain Wall Components in High-Salt Environments

In the curtain wall selection for high-end island-type buildings, the extreme environment of high salt fog, high humidity, and strong ultraviolet radiation has always been a widely recognized technical pain point in the industry. Ordinary GRC exterior wall panels often develop surface powdering, steel bar corrosion, and joint cracking problems after only 3-5 years of service, which not only affects the visual integrity of the building but also creates hidden safety hazards of falling objects from height. As an industry practitioner with nearly 30 years of full-chain GRC service experience, we carried out targeted optimization of the GRC formula to address the particularities of the high-salt environment while serving multiple island building projects in Sansha and other South China Sea regions. The Sansha island-specific GRC exterior wall panels we launched have been verified over the long term in multiple actual projects and can perfectly meet the service requirements of extreme marine climates.

### Core Damage Mechanism of High-Salt Environments on Ordinary GRC Curtain Wall Components Many industry colleagues know that GRC, or glass fiber reinforced concrete, has inherent advantages of light weight, high strength, and high design freedom, making it one of the mainstream choices for high-end public building curtain walls. However, the standard formula for ordinary civil applications simply cannot cope with the extreme environment of islands like Sansha: first, chloride ions in sea salt continuously penetrate into the components, accelerating the corrosion and embrittlement of the internal alkali-resistant glass fibers, causing the original flexural strength to drop by more than 40% within a few years; second, thermal expansion and contraction caused by day-night temperature differences, combined with salt crystal erosion, produce irregular micro-cracks on the component surface, further accelerating deeper salt fog damage; finally, the insufficient impermeability grade of ordinary formulas means that the embedded metal anchors rust and expand rapidly under long-term high humidity, directly causing components to lift and fall off. We have previously encountered many island projects where ordinary GRC components were chosen in the early stage to control costs, requiring complete replacement in less than 4 years, making the whole-life-cycle cost far higher than the initial investment.

### Core Directions of Formula Optimization for Sansha Island-Specific GRC Curtain Wall Components To address the above pain points, Qinglong's technical team drew on nearly 30 years of GRC R&D experience and the technical expertise gained from participating in the formulation of multiple national and industry standards, including the “Technical Standard for the Building Application of Glass Fiber Reinforced Cement (GRC)” (JGJ/T423-2018), completing targeted formula iteration in three dimensions: first, optimizing the cementitious material system by using low-alkalinity special cement compounded with high-impermeability mineral admixtures, raising the impermeability grade of the component body to P12 or above and blocking the chloride penetration path at its source; second, upgrading the proportion and dispersion process of alkali-resistant glass fibers, combined with a dedicated silane impregnation coating on the surface, so that the flexural strength retention rate remains above 90% after 1000 hours of accelerated salt spray aging tests; third, adjusting the aggregate gradation and admixture system so that the linear expansion coefficient of the components closely matches the aluminum alloy keels and sealants commonly used in island projects, preventing joint cracking at the structural level. The entire formula optimization scheme has passed extreme-environment weathering tests by third-party institutions and fully meets the long-term service requirements for buildings in the South China Sea region. ### Full-Process Implementation Support for Island GRC Curtain Wall Projects For island projects like Sansha, formula optimization alone is far from enough. Limited transportation conditions and harsh on-site construction environments place extremely high demands on a supplier's full-chain service capability. As one of China's leading custom GRC manufacturers, Qinglong has a GRC production capacity of 600,000 square meters per year and holds a Grade II professional contracting qualification for building curtain wall engineering, enabling us to provide island projects with one-stop services ranging from preliminary detailed design and customized production to on-site installation and later maintenance: during the production stage, we perform differentiated pretreatment according to the installation positions of different components, pre-embed stainless steel anchors suitable for marine environments, and complete pre-assembly tests before leaving the factory to minimize on-site construction work; meanwhile, we establish a dedicated quality traceability file for each delivered project and provide specialized maintenance services for up to 15 years, thoroughly solving the pain point of inconvenient later maintenance for island projects. At present, our island-specific GRC exterior wall panels have been applied in multiple public buildings and supporting projects in Sansha. After more than 3 years of verification in actual environments, the component surfaces show no obvious powdering or cracks, and all performance indicators meet design expectations.

For architectural designers and project owners, curtain wall selection for island-type buildings is never a simple material purchase but a systematic decision that must balance initial cost, long-term performance, and maintenance difficulty. The formula optimization logic of the Sansha island-specific GRC exterior wall panels can likewise be replicated in curtain wall projects in all coastal high-salt regions. As a core service provider in the GRC niche, we always take the actual service scenarios of each project as the core starting point of technology R&D, providing targeted solutions for building needs in different environments.
