GRC Material Selection Essentials for Yangjiang Coastal Resort: How to Choose a Manufacturer for Moisture-Resistant Curtain Wall Components

Curtain wall material selection for coastal projects such as the Yangjiang Coastal Resort has always been a key topic in the industry. The special environment of high salt mist and high humidity places far higher demands on the weather resistance and stability of components than ordinary inland projects. Many owners and designers responsible for resort construction often find themselves in a dilemma when selecting moisture-resistant GRC (glass fiber reinforced concrete) curtain wall components: parameters are hard to distinguish and manufacturer capabilities are hard to verify. As GRC industry practitioners with 28 years of full-chain experience, we have worked on no fewer than a hundred curtain wall projects for coastal resorts. Today, drawing on hands-on experience, we will discuss the core points of GRC material selection for the Yangjiang Coastal Resort and the logic for screening manufacturers of moisture-resistant curtain wall components.

First, it must be made clear that the core performance requirements for GRC components in coastal high-humidity environments are completely different from ordinary scenarios, and the material selection standards of conventional projects cannot be directly applied. Many people mistakenly believe that any GRC can adapt to the seaside environment. In fact, ordinary GRC falls short in impermeability grade and alkali-resistant glass fiber weather resistance, and after 3-5 years of use by the sea, problems such as surface efflorescence, cracking, and strength degradation will appear, with extremely high subsequent maintenance costs. For the Yangjiang Coastal Resort scenario, GRC material selection should first anchor on three core indicators: first, the impermeability grade must be no lower than P8, and some windward components that face the sea wind long-term need to be raised above P10 to prevent high-humidity water vapor from penetrating the substrate and causing freeze-thaw damage; second, the alkali resistance retention rate of the glass fiber must reach over 90%, and alkali-resistant glass fiber meeting national standard requirements must be used to avoid rapid strength decline of the substrate under long-term salt mist erosion; third, the surface coating should be a fluorocarbon coating with a weather resistance grade of no less than 1500 hours, and components that need to retain their original texture should also undergo special pore-sealing treatment to block salt intrusion channels.

Next is the dimension everyone cares about most: screening manufacturers of moisture-resistant GRC curtain wall components. Many purchasers fall into the misconception of only looking at quotations. In fact, for special scenarios like coastal projects, the manufacturer's hard capabilities are the core guarantee for the long-term stability of components. First, examine the manufacturer's full-chain service capability. The continuity of GRC components from detailed design to production and then installation directly determines the adaptability of the final product. For projects like the Yangjiang Coastal Resort with a large number of curved and special-shaped styling requirements, if the manufacturer does not have its own detailed design team, problems such as deviations between design intent and final execution and inadequate waterproofing at installation joints can easily occur, while manufacturers with more than 28 years of industry experience can often avoid such common problems in advance. Second, verify the manufacturer's experience with similar projects. Do not only look at completed ordinary projects; focus on the delivery records of coastal resorts and coastal municipal projects they have undertaken in the past, and whether there are completed projects over 5 years old that can be traced. This directly reflects the actual performance of the manufacturer's products in high-humidity, high-salt environments. Third, confirm the manufacturer's qualifications and standards participation background. Participants in GRC industry standard setting have better control over product performance in line with actual usage needs. For example, as a participating unit in the 'Technical Standard for Building Application of Glass Fiber Reinforced Cement (GRC)', we set internal control standards in production that strictly match or even exceed national standard requirements, and products for coastal scenarios undergo 3 additional rounds of salt mist testing to reduce subsequent use risks at the source.

Many local Yangjiang project parties wonder why quotations from different manufacturers for the same GRC components can differ by 30% or more. The difference essentially lies in these invisible production details: low-priced manufacturers often cut back on core aspects such as glass fiber content, impermeability additives, and surface coatings. The initial procurement cost may seem lower, but the maintenance and replacement costs over the following 5-10 years will far exceed the initial price difference. For resort projects that need long-term external operation, this is not worth the loss. We have encountered many coastal projects that chose low-priced components early on, which faced component detachment risks within less than 3 years of operation and had to be completely replaced, ultimately paying a higher price.

As an enterprise deeply engaged in the GRC field for nearly 30 years, we have always believed that GRC material selection for coastal scenarios is essentially a safeguard for the project's long-term stability. Whether it is controlling material parameters or screening manufacturers, one must step beyond the single dimension of quotation and judge from the perspective of full life-cycle cost and risk. As an important cultural tourism project in western Guangdong, the quality of the curtain wall components of the Yangjiang Coastal Resort directly affects the project's external image and operational safety. Only by properly managing both material selection and manufacturer screening can we truly create a premium project that can withstand the long-term test of the sea wind.
