Chengde Cultural Tourism Landmark GRC Curtain Wall Panel Project Completed: How Complex Curved Designs Move from Drawings to Reality

As urban cultural tourism landmarks become tangible carriers of regional culture, the presentation of a building's facade often determines a project's recognizability and long-term reputation. Recently, the large curved GRC decorative component project supporting the Chengde cultural tourism landmark was officially completed. As a supplier with nearly 30 years of deep expertise in the GRC field, we participated in the entire process from detailed design to construction. Through this case, we break down the core logic behind choosing GRC materials for such high-end cultural tourism landmark projects, as well as the key difficulties in implementing complex curved components.

1. Why do cultural tourism landmark projects prioritize GRC curtain wall panels?

Many people's understanding of GRC (glass fiber reinforced concrete) remains at the level of traditional European-style decorative moldings. In fact, in recent cultural tourism and public landmark projects, the proportion of GRC curtain wall panel applications is rising rapidly. For a cultural tourism landmark project like Chengde, which combines cultural attributes with geographic and climatic characteristics, the properties of GRC materials precisely match the core requirements: first, exceptional sculptural plasticity—GRC can achieve virtually unlimited curved and irregular constructions without being constrained by mold standardization, which perfectly fits the regional cultural architectural imagery the project aims to convey; second, lightweight yet high-strength properties—GRC components of the same area weigh only 1/4 of natural stone, greatly reducing the load pressure on the building's main structure, while bending strength can be stably maintained above 20MPa, well suited to the northern climate of low winter temperatures and large temperature differences, with freeze-thaw resistance far superior to ordinary concrete decorative components; finally, GRC's inorganic material nature—its completely non-combustible characteristics comply with the fire safety regulations for public cultural tourism projects, and its weather resistance under long-term outdoor use ensures decades of appearance stability, reducing later maintenance costs. 2. Breaking Down the Core Difficulties in Implementing Large Curved GRC Decorative Components

For such curved GRC component projects exceeding conventional dimensions, the most common problems include deviations between design intent and actual results, uneven on-site joint gaps, and insufficient durability after component installation. During the implementation of the Chengde project, we focused on overcoming three core stages: first, front-loaded detailed design—upon receiving the initial design plan, our technical team immediately used BIM modeling to split and optimize all curved components, breaking the overall curved surface down into standardized unit modules, while performing simulation verification of each module's radius of curvature to ensure a minimum curvature of no less than 300mm while fully reproducing the design's visual effect, avoiding unsmooth curved surfaces after component forming; second, precision control in production—we adopted an integrated casting process, and each component underwent error verification through 3D scanning after forming, keeping the dimensional error of individual components within 1mm to ensure tight on-site joints; third, safety redundancy design in installation—in view of the windy climate of northern regions, we optimized the anchoring node design of the components, conducted stress simulation calculations for every connection point of each component, and employed 3D laser scanning positioning during installation to ensure consistent flatness across the entire facade.

3. Nearly 30 Years of Full-Chain Service Capability Is the Core Support for Landmark Project Delivery

As an enterprise with 28 years of full-chain GRC service experience, the landmark GRC projects we have participated in cover the vast majority of provinces nationwide. From early-stage design coordination, to mid-stage production control, to late-stage on-site installation and maintenance, we have established a standardized delivery process. We currently operate a GRC production base with an annual capacity of 600,000 square meters, and we are a contributing member for multiple national and industry standards, including the Technical Standard for Building Application of Glass Fiber Reinforced Cement (GRC). We have received industry-authoritative awards such as the GRC Building Engineering Innovation Award, and can provide tailored solutions for different types of projects. Whether you are a project party new to GRC or a design team with mature application experience, you can obtain the corresponding technical support according to your project's actual needs.

From the implementation case of the Chengde cultural tourism landmark GRC project, it is clear that GRC materials have long shed the label of traditional low-end decorative materials and become the core vehicle for personalized design in high-end public buildings and cultural tourism landmark projects. For project parties with such needs, choosing a supplier with full-chain service capability is the core prerequisite for avoiding compromises in design outcomes and ensuring long-term project stability.
