The adjustment of connection angles between double-curved GRC panels and steel structures is a core aspect of curtain wall construction for irregular-shaped public buildings, determining the final forming result and structural safety. As a Qinglong GRC manufacturer with 28 years of full-chain GRC service experience, we have handled nearly a thousand landmark-level double-curved GRC projects and found that the root cause of most construction deviations lies in failing to bring angle adjustment logic forward during the early detailed design stage; handling it ad hoc only at on-site installation often leaves hidden risks such as cracking, uneven joint seams, and even anchoring failure.
First, it is essential to clarify the core premise of adjusting connection angles between double-curved GRC panels and steel structures: the shaping curvature of double-curved GRC inherently involves non-standardized variables, so the installation logic of ordinary flat-panel GRC cannot be directly applied. The conventional approach is to use Rhino parametric modeling during the detailed design stage to pre-position the connection points of each GRC panel, marking out in advance the preset angles between each anchor seat and the steel structure keel, thus avoiding errors caused by experience-based on-site measurement. When Qinglong participated in a provincial capital convention and exhibition center project, it used 3D laser scanning to capture overall point cloud data of the completed steel structure keels in advance, controlling angle deviations within 0.5° and reducing on-site adjustment workload at the source.
Angle adjustment during the on-site execution stage should be handled in two scenarios: for small angle errors with deviations under 2°, fine-tuning can be achieved by installing custom wedge shims between the embedded anchor seats of the GRC panels and the keel; note that the shim material must match the anti-corrosion grade of the keel to prevent later electrochemical corrosion; if the deviation exceeds 3°, the GRC panel body must not be forcibly bent—you must re-check the detailed fabrication drawings of the corresponding panel and make local adjustments to the welding position of the anchor seat, while simultaneously re-verifying the joint gaps of adjacent panels to avoid cascading shape misalignment. A special reminder here: many contractors, in order to rush the schedule, force angle adjustments directly with crowbars, which can easily damage the internal fibers of GRC panels and leave hidden risks of long-term cracking.
Finally, note that after angle adjustment is completed, a secondary load verification must be carried out to ensure that the adjusted connection points bear loads evenly and comply with the requirements of the Technical Standard for Application of GRC in Buildings. As an organization that participated in formulating the GRC industry standard, Qinglong's full-chain service follows angle control throughout the entire process, from detailed design and production to installation and maintenance, preventing later maintenance risks.
