Key Points of Drainage Design When Single-Curved GRC Panels Are Used on Roofs?

In the roof system design of commercial complexes and landmark public buildings, single-curve GRC panels are widely applied for their advantages of light weight, high strength, and strong adaptability to various shapes. However, many designers and project leaders often overlook the particularity of their drainage design, resulting in later problems such as roof leakage, water pooling, and dust accumulation, which affect the overall service life of the building. As a Qinglong GRC manufacturer with 28 years of full-chain GRC service experience, we have participated in the implementation of nearly one thousand roof GRC projects. Drawing on the technical accumulation from participating in compiling the Technical Standard for Building Application of Glass Fiber Reinforced Cement (GRC), we have compiled the core points of single-curve GRC panel roof drainage design for reference by industry peers.

First, it is necessary to clarify the slope adaptation logic of single-curve GRC panel roofs. Unlike the fixed slope requirements of traditional concrete roofs, the curvature of single-curve GRC panels needs to be designed in coordination with the drainage direction. For regular areas, a slope of no less than 3% is recommended, and for areas with concentrated water collection such as eaves, the slope should be increased to above 5% to avoid local water retention dead zones caused by the undulating curved surfaces of the panels. Many projects deliberately lower the slope to fit the building's appearance, which instead allows dust and fallen leaves carried by rainwater to accumulate in the low-lying areas of the panels, blocking drainage paths over time and creating leakage risks. Next is the drainage structural design of panel joints. The joints of single-curve GRC panels should not directly adopt the ordinary glue-sealing treatment; it is recommended to preset water-guide groove structures on the back of the panels, so that a small amount of rainwater seeping through the joints can be directed straight to the roof drainage system along the preset drainage channels instead of accumulating on the inner side of the panels. At the same time, attention should be paid to the waterproofing treatment of anchoring nodes. In multiple large roof GRC projects, Qinglong adds waterproof gaskets at anchoring points to prevent the areas around metal anchors from becoming breakthrough points for water seepage.

Finally, the service life matching between the drainage system and the GRC panels must be taken into account. The selection of roof drainage gutters and downpipes should be consistent with the weather resistance of the GRC panels, so as to avoid the supporting components aging and failing before the GRC panels, which would instead shorten the service life of the entire roof system. For projects in coastal and rainy regions, hydrophobic treatment should also be applied to the GRC panel surfaces to reduce rainwater adhesion on the panel surface and further lower the probability of residual water accumulation.
