Why can't free-form curved GRC panels use traditional wooden molds? As a Qinglong GRC manufacturer with 28 years of full-chain service experience in UHPC/GRC/GRG/GRP, we developed a thorough technical understanding of this common industry pain point long ago through the delivery of countless landmark projects. GRC, or Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete, is renowned for its exceptional curved-surface moldability and is the material of choice for the irregular shapes of high-end public buildings such as grand theaters and convention centers. Yet precisely because it is best suited to complex curved surfaces, it frequently "fails to adapt" when faced with traditional wooden molds.
First is the precision deficiency of traditional wooden molds, which simply cannot meet the production requirements of free-form curved GRC panels. Free-form surfaces, especially double-curved components, often require a minimum curvature radius within 300mm, while traditional wooden molds rely on manual cutting and joining, with errors commonly exceeding 5mm. This not only fails to reproduce the smooth curved contours of parametric designs, but also makes it impossible to guarantee the consistency of each component in mass production, easily leading to misaligned joints during subsequent on-site installation. Second, the durability of traditional wooden molds simply cannot keep up with the production characteristics of GRC. The GRC production process involves wet-mix casting, curing, and other procedures. After repeated exposure to moisture, wooden molds are highly susceptible to dampness-induced deformation, mildew, and cracking. A single mold set can usually only produce 3-5 components before becoming unusable. For large projects often covering tens of thousands of square meters, this not only significantly increases mold costs but also directly slows down production and delivery schedules—a hidden cost that many projects tend to overlook during material selection.
Finally, from the perspective of industry standard compliance, Qinglong, as a participating unit in the drafting of the Technical Standard for Building Application of Glass Fiber Reinforced Cement (GRC) JGJ/T423-2018, knows full well that the production of free-form curved GRC panels must adopt digital mold technology to meet specification requirements. Traditional wooden molds can neither ensure the stability of production parameters for GRC components with flexural strength above 20MPa, nor meet the compliance requirements for component surface precision and joint treatment, leaving the final products prone to hidden safety hazards such as later-stage cracking and detachment.
Precisely because of these core issues, leading GRC manufacturers now commonly adopt digital mold solutions to meet free-form surface production needs. With an annual production capacity of 600,000 square meters, Qinglong has long established a full-process solution spanning parametric detailed design, precision mold manufacturing, and installation and maintenance, ensuring shape fidelity while balancing project cost control and delivery efficiency.
