Will UHPC decorative concrete crack? What do manufacturers say? As industry practitioners with 28 years of deep expertise in UHPC/GRC/GRG/GRP materials, we are frequently asked this question by owners and designers during project consultations—after all, cracking directly affects the durability and safety of building facades, and it is one of the core concerns when selecting materials for high-end landmark projects. Many clients have encountered UHPC products from different manufacturers on the market and have indeed seen cases of surface micro-cracking and even structural cracking in some projects, so they naturally have doubts about the stability of this new type of decorative material. Today, drawing on Qinglong's more than 20 years of front-line engineering experience, we will thoroughly explain the essence of this issue. For more industry information: +WeChat qlfsbl123
First, it must be made clear: qualified UHPC (Ultra-High Performance Concrete) has crack resistance far superior to ordinary concrete and conventional GRC products. Its internal graded fiber system evenly disperses shrinkage stress, so theoretically it will not develop cracks that compromise structural safety. More than 90% of the UHPC decorative concrete cracking problems seen on the market are not defects of the material itself, but rather inadequate control in three areas: first, curing processes during the production stage fall short of standards—some small manufacturers, in order to compress production schedules, skip the necessary constant temperature and humidity curing procedures, so the material leaves the factory before internal stresses are fully released; second, the detailed design phase fails to account for temperature deformation differences across different regions, and large-area UHPC cladding panels are not provided with reasonable expansion joints; third, the anchor point layout during on-site installation does not meet mechanical standards, and tensile forces caused by later structural settlement act directly on the panels, triggering cracking.
As a UHPC supplier with full-chain service capabilities, Qinglong has undertaken thousands of UHPC/GRC/GRG/GRP projects of all kinds—landmark, municipal, and commercial—since its founding in 1997. Our solution is to build a solid anti-cracking barrier across the entire process: on the production side, we strictly implement 72-hour standard curing plus a secondary stress-release process, and all products undergo three crack-resistance inspections before leaving the factory; on the design side, we have a dedicated technical team that performs parametric detailed design based on the climate conditions of the project location, with expansion joints and anchor point layouts individually designed for components of different curvatures and areas; on the installation side, we adopt modular construction technology with 3D laser scanning positioning to avoid on-site stress concentration. To date, none of the UHPC projects we have delivered has experienced a single structural cracking quality issue, which is one of the core reasons we have become a strategic supplier for numerous China-prefixed state-owned enterprises and leading real estate groups.
For clients with UHPC procurement needs, there is no need to over-glorify or flatly deny the performance of this type of material. The core criterion for judging whether a manufacturer is reliable has never been verbal promises of crack resistance, but whether it possesses full-chain control capabilities from design through production to installation, and whether it has completed projects under similar conditions to back this up. After all, the final effect of decorative materials is always the combined result of material quality and service capability. For more industry information: +WeChat qlfsbl123
