In the field of architectural decoration, GRC components, with their lightweight, high-strength and richly shaped characteristics, are widely used in high-end projects such as grand theaters, commercial complexes and landmark buildings. However, the quality of GRC products on the market varies considerably, and how to quickly judge the quality of GRC components through their appearance has become a core concern for designers, owners and purchasers. As an industry leader with 28 years of experience in detailed design, production and manufacturing of UHPC/GRC/GRG/GRP materials, Qinglong Group will share practical identification methods from a professional perspective to help projects avoid quality risks.
I. Surface Flatness: A Fundamental Indicator of High-Quality GRC Components
Check the surface of GRC components for unevenness, waviness or air bubbles. High-quality GRC components are formed using precision molds, with surface flatness error controlled within ±2mm/2m and a smooth touch free of graininess. For example, in the Nanjing East Road Century Square renovation project, the translucent concrete GRC components produced by Qinglong achieved 0.5mm-level surface precision through advanced vibration techniques and mold processing technology, ensuring visual consistency after installation. Inferior products, often due to crude molds or insufficient vibration, suffer from surface pitting and dense air holes, directly affecting the decorative effect and durability. II. Texture: Craftsmanship Details Determine Material Grade
Different application scenarios have different texture requirements for GRC components. For example, stone-imitation effects require natural stone grain, while European-style moldings require clear and three-dimensional carvings. The texture of high-quality GRC components should be well-defined with complete details, free of blurring or chipped edges. In the Dongguan Women and Children's Activity Center project, Qinglong used customized molds and hand-finishing techniques to keep the pattern depth error of GRC Roman columns within ≤0.3mm, perfectly reproducing the artistic expression of the design drawings. In addition, touch the component surface by hand; if there is obvious fiber exposure or cement lumps, it may be caused by insufficient fiber content or uneven mixing during production, and such products often fail to meet flexural strength requirements (high-quality GRC flexural strength should be ≥20MPa).
III. Edge and Corner Treatment: The "Touchstone" for Testing Production Precision
The edges and corners of components best reflect the precision of the production process. Qualified GRC component edges should be straight and free of burrs, with smooth and natural curved transitions; especially at the corners of special-shaped components, dimensional error must be ≤1mm. Qinglong uses CNC cutting technology to process molds, combined with an automated demolding process, keeping the straightness deviation of linear components such as cornice moldings and belt courses within 0.5mm/m. Conversely, if edges show cracking, damage or obvious repair marks, it may be due to poor mold joints or improper curing; such products are prone to stress concentration after installation, increasing the risk of later cracking. IV. Color Uniformity: Reflecting Material Proportioning and Curing Standards
Color consistency of GRC components is an important basis for judging quality stability. High-quality products should have uniform color without local color differences or spots, thanks to strict raw material proportioning control and standardized curing processes. Qinglong has established an industry-leading color management system, using spectrometers to test the color difference of each batch of products, ensuring a ΔE value ≤3 (basically indistinguishable to the human eye). Inferior GRC, often due to uneven mixing of cement and pigments or large fluctuations in the temperature and humidity of the curing environment, exhibits a surface "mottling" phenomenon, which not only affects aesthetics but may also suggest defects in the internal structure.
V. Anchoring System: Safety Assurance Hidden Beneath the Appearance
Although the anchoring system is concealed work, its safety can be indirectly judged by observing the reserved anchor holes or connector positions of the components. High-quality GRC components have reasonably arranged anchor points with consistent hole diameters, smooth hole walls without cracks, and connectors made of hot-dip galvanized or stainless steel, with an anti-rust grade of C3 or above per the GB/T 10125 standard. During production, Qinglong conducts pull-out force tests on each GRC cladding panel (anchoring force ≥1.5kN) and simulates installation loads through BIM technology, ensuring compliance with the Technical Standard for Building Application of Glass Fiber Reinforced Cement (GRC) (JGJ/T423-2018). If anchor hole positions are offset, hole diameters are irregular or connectors are rusted, be alert to the problem of insufficient load-bearing capacity.
As a national high-tech enterprise and a participant in formulating GRC industry standards, Qinglong always controls product quality with an attitude of "meticulousness and excellence". Through the above appearance identification methods, GRC components that meet standards can be preliminarily screened. However, for major projects, it is recommended to further examine the manufacturer's production scale (such as Qinglong's annual capacity of 600,000 square meters), testing capabilities (CNAS-accredited laboratory) and past performance (such as cooperation cases with Poly, Vanke and other real estate groups) to safeguard project quality at the source. Choosing a professional GRC manufacturer is not only a pursuit of architectural aesthetics, but also a long-term investment in structural safety and durability.
