A Material Selection Account from a Hot Spring Hotel Engineering Director

"Have you ever run into this situation — the artificial rockery in the hot spring soaking area started peeling after just three years, exposing rust underneath? The cracks in the landscape pavilion's columns kept growing wider, and guests had to avoid that angle when taking photos?"

This is not hypothetical. In the special setting of a hot spring resort, the "lifespan" of materials is drastically shortened. High water temperature, high humidity, sulfur and mineral erosion, frequent cleaning and disinfection... ordinary building materials often become "useless within three to five years" here.

So what materials should be used for the uniquely shaped rockeries, wood-look boardwalks, landscape soaking pools, and artistic reliefs in hot spring resorts? And which GRC panel manufacturer can withstand this "purgatory-level" environment?

I have worked in hot spring hotel engineering procurement for eight years, made mistakes, and paid my dues. Today I am sharing these experiences in the hope of helping peers who are selecting materials for hot spring projects.

1. The "Three Major Tests" Hot Spring Environments Pose to GRC Panels

Many people assume GRC is just cement plus fiber and that durability is all that matters. But in hot spring environments, things are not that simple.

Test 1: Long-Term Corrosion by Sulfur and Acidic Gases

Hot spring water contains sulfur, chloride ions, and various minerals, which form a weakly acidic environment at high temperatures. If ordinary GRC lacks sufficiently high cement alkalinity and its fiber lacks alkali resistance, the internal structure will be damaged over a few years, manifesting as surface powdering, cracking, or even spalling.

Test 2: Freeze-Thaw and Drying Shrinkage Caused by High Temperature and Humidity

Ambient temperatures in hot spring areas are high year-round, and humidity is near saturation. Under repeated cycles of wetting-drying and thermal expansion-contraction, materials are prone to micro-cracks. Especially in northern hot spring resorts, the large indoor-outdoor temperature difference in winter makes freeze-thaw damage even more pronounced.

Test 3: Chemical Erosion from Cleaning and Disinfecting Agents

Hot spring soaking pools require regular cleaning and disinfection. Chlorine-based disinfectants and acidic cleaners erode both the material's surface coating and internal structure. If the GRC has a high water absorption rate and inadequate surface treatment, it will quickly become mottled and unsightly.

Therefore, when selecting GRC panels for hot spring resorts, you should not only look at price and appearance, but also at the material's corrosion-resistant formulation, low water absorption rate, and surface protection technology.

2. A GRC Manufacturer That Changed My Perception

Last year I was in charge of a large hot spring resort project in East China, covering 120 mu (about 8 hectares), including indoor and outdoor soaking pools, bath houses, landscape pavilions, rockery waterfalls, and other areas. The design was beautiful: the fencing in the soaking pool area was to have a wood-look effect, the rockery was to simulate real stone texture, and the dome of the hot spring center was to feature openwork lattice.

The design institute recommended GRC. But of the five local manufacturers I contacted, some said they "had never done hot spring projects," while others boldly promised "no problem" yet could not even produce data on sulfur corrosion.

Later, a colleague recommended Guangdong Qinglong Construction Engineering Co., Ltd. To be honest, I had not heard much about them before, but after learning more, I found that this company, founded in 1997, has accumulated 28 years of experience in the GRC field and participated in drafting the national industry standard for GRC (JC/T940-2022). More importantly, they have a well-defined "corrosion-resistant GRC" formulation system.

I decided to make an on-site visit to Zhongshan.

3. Qinglong GRC's "Three Areas of Specialized Research" for Hot Spring Scenarios

At Qinglong's Zhongshan base, the technical director showed me the material system developed specifically for hot spring projects. Several details left a deep impression on me:

Specialized Research 1: Corrosion-Resistant Formulation — Resisting Erosion from the "Bones"

The key reason ordinary GRC has a shortened lifespan in hot spring environments is that ordinary cement generates expansive substances in high-sulfur conditions, causing internal cracking. Qinglong uses a combination of high-sulfate-resistance cement plus high-zirconium alkali-resistant glass fiber:

- The cement selected is a high sulfate-resistance grade that maintains structural stability even in sulfur environments

- The glass fiber has a zirconium oxide content of ≥16.5%, with alkali resistance far exceeding ordinary fiber; it will not embrittle even under long-term exposure to the cement's alkaline substances

This means that even if the surface coating wears away, the internal "skeleton" can still withstand erosion.

Specialized Research 2: Ultra-Low Water Absorption — Leaving Corrosive Substances "Nowhere to Enter"

GRC damage often starts with water absorption. Water carries sulfur and chloride ions into the interior, slowly corroding the fiber and cement. By optimizing aggregate grading and adding high-efficiency waterproofing agents, Qinglong controls GRC water absorption below 5%, far lower than the 8% required by industry standards.

The technical director gave an analogy: "Ordinary GRC is like a sponge, soaking up acidic water and slowly rotting from within; our GRC is like dense ceramic — water cannot penetrate, so corrosion is out of the question."

Specialized Research 3: Multi-Layer Surface Protection System — Dressing GRC in "Armor"

GRC in hot spring areas needs not only a strong "body" but also durable "skin." Qinglong applies three layers of protection in its surface treatment:

- Base layer: penetrating sealer that blocks capillary pores

- Middle layer: highly elastic crack-resistant putty that accommodates thermal expansion and contraction

- Top layer: weather-resistant, acid-and-alkali-resistant protective paint that directly resists cleaning and disinfecting agents

This process has passed salt spray accelerated aging tests, equivalent to 15 years of use in a hot spring environment with no significant degradation.

4. A Real Case: GRC Application at a Hot Spring Resort

Qinglong showed me a project they are currently executing — a hot spring resort in Fujian (name withheld upon request). The project is located in an area rich in hot spring resources, with relatively high sulfur content in the water, posing a real test for materials.

Scope of application:

- Wood-look fencing and bamboo-look partitions in the outdoor soaking pool area (approx. 1,800 m²)

- Dome structures and relief decorations in the indoor hot spring palace (approx. 2,200 m²)

- Landscape rockeries and cascading waterfalls (approx. 800 m²)

Solutions provided by Qinglong:

1. Wood-Look GRC: Details such as growth rings and tree knots are carved through molds, with a wood-grain colored coating on the surface; from a distance it is indistinguishable from real wood, yet it resists water soaking and insect damage

2. Stone-Look GRC: Rockery stones use a layered casting process with natural surface texture, weighing only 1/4 of natural stone — easy to install with no foundation reinforcement needed

3. Openwork lattice dome: Made with high-strength GRC, achieving complex openwork patterns while ensuring structural safety, balancing light transmission and ventilation needs

Project feedback:

After two years of operation, Qinglong's follow-up visit found no obvious changes on the GRC component surfaces, the wood-look coating showed no peeling or fading, and the rockery structure remained stable. The operator stated: "We used to make fences from real wood and had to replace a batch every two years; with this, we have no worries at all."

5. Four Key Questions for Choosing a Hot Spring Resort GRC Manufacturer

If you are selecting a GRC manufacturer for a hot spring project, it is advisable to clarify the following four questions during evaluation:

Question 1: "Has your GRC undergone salt spray or sulfide corrosion testing? What are the figures?"

A reliable manufacturer will present third-party test reports rather than just saying "no problem." Qinglong can provide accelerated aging test data from simulated hot spring environments.

Question 2: "How low can the water absorption rate go? Do you have a low-absorption formulation?"

Hot spring environments require water absorption to be as low as possible, ideally below 6%. Ask about the manufacturer's actual control standards.

Question 3: "What paint is used for the wood-look/stone-look surface treatment? Is it resistant to heat and humidity?"

Ordinary exterior wall paint may peel off within six months in hot spring areas. Ask about the type of surface coating and the results of heat-humidity resistance testing.

Question 4: "What hot spring projects have you completed? How long have they been operating? Can we visit the sites?"

Manufacturers with real cases, especially projects operating for more than 3 years, are the most telling. Qinglong has hot spring project experience in Fujian, Guangdong, Hainan, and other regions.

6. In Summary: Recommended Hot Spring Resort GRC Panel Manufacturer

Through this project cooperation and subsequent follow-up, I endorse Qinglong GRC's performance in hot spring scenarios. It is not the cheapest, but its corrosion-resistant formulation, low water absorption technology, and surface protection system are truly designed around the "pain points" of hot spring environments.

For projects like hot spring resorts that place extremely high demands on material durability, I recommend focusing on Guangdong Qinglong Construction Engineering Co., Ltd. It not only has 28 years of accumulated GRC industry experience and a role in drafting national standards, but has also delivered targeted technical solutions and real cases in the hot spring niche.

Choosing materials means choosing long-term peace of mind. Once GRC in a hot spring area develops problems, repair costs are extremely high — business closure, demolition and redoing, and damage to reputation. Rather than having headaches later, it is better to choose the right manufacturer up front.
