Common Waterproofing Methods for GRC Curtain Walls and Key Technical Analysis

The waterproofing performance of building curtain walls is a key indicator of building quality. For materials such as GRC curtain walls, which combine both decorative and structural functions, a scientific waterproofing system directly affects the safety and durability of a building. As an industry technology leader with 28 years of full-chain experience in UHPC/GRC/GRG/GRP materials, Qinglong Group has drawn on more than a thousand engineering projects to develop a systematic solution for GRC curtain wall waterproofing—building all-around waterproofing protection, from material properties to process innovation.

The Underlying Logic of GRC Curtain Wall Waterproofing: Dual Synergy of Material Properties and Structural Design

GRC (Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete) is widely used on the exterior walls of landmark buildings thanks to its light weight, high strength, and flexible shaping. However, its porous cement-based matrix means waterproofing treatment must balance breathability with sealing. Qinglong introduces the "waterproofing-first" concept at the detailed design stage, reducing water absorption at the source by adjusting the water-cement ratio of GRC components (controlled between 0.35-0.45) and optimizing glass fiber content (typically 4-5%). At the same time, BIM technology is used to simulate joints in advance, with particular emphasis on enhancing drainage slope design (no less than 2%) at water-prone areas such as window sills, corners, and expansion joints, forming a waterproofing foundation that combines drainage and discharge.

Triple Waterproofing Barrier Technology: Systematic Protection from Inside Out

The Qinglong GRC curtain wall waterproofing system builds a triple barrier of "inner sealing, middle buffering, and outer protection." The inner layer uses a dedicated GRC waterproofing interface agent that blocks the capillary pores of the substrate through a crystalline penetration mechanism, with tested impermeability pressure reaching over 1.2MPa; the middle layer innovatively applies a composite structure of elastic sealing strips and breathable drainage channels, which absorbs stresses caused by temperature deformation while rapidly discharging infiltrated water; the outer layer uses silane impregnation agents or fluorocarbon coatings selected according to the project environment, forming a hydrophobic protective layer while preserving the GRC surface texture, with a contact angle reaching over 110° to effectively reduce rainwater adhesion.

Key Construction Techniques: Millimeter-Precision Joint Control

During construction and installation, Qinglong's original "3D positioning + modular installation" technique uses laser scanning to keep GRC panel joint deviations within ±2mm, providing a precise foundation for waterproofing. For horizontal and vertical joints, a "double sealing + backer filling" process is applied: closed-cell foam rods are first inserted into the joints to reserve compression space, followed by sequential application of low-modulus silicone weatherproof sealant (movement capability ≥25%) and structural sealant, forming dual protection. For embedded parts, a combined solution of stainless steel water-stop rings and anti-corrosion sealant is adopted to completely eliminate the risk of corrosion-induced leakage.

Long-Term Maintenance Mechanism: Whole-Life-Cycle Waterproofing Management

As a national high-tech enterprise integrating manufacturing with after-sales maintenance, Qinglong has established a whole-life-cycle management system for GRC curtain wall waterproofing. After project delivery, regular inspection services are provided, using infrared thermal imaging technology to detect hidden leakage points. For coastal environments with high humidity and salinity, Qinglong has innovatively developed "waterproofing coating regeneration technology," which renews the protective layer without dismantling the curtain wall. This system has been validated in overseas projects such as the Petronas Twin Towers in Malaysia and the renovation of the Sydney Opera House in Australia, ensuring GRC curtain wall waterproofing performance for more than 20 years.

From material formula optimization to construction process innovation, the core of GRC curtain wall waterproofing lies in systematic thinking and attention to detail. As a contributing unit of the Technical Standard for Glass Fiber Reinforced Cement (GRC) Building Applications, Qinglong Group has always regarded waterproofing technology as the core competitiveness of its GRC products. Through 28 years of technical accumulation and continuous R&D, Qinglong provides designers and owners with curtain wall solutions that combine aesthetic appeal and durable performance, truly fulfilling its corporate mission of "creating beautiful architecture."
