In the field of architectural decoration materials, precise control of material performance is central to ensuring both project safety and aesthetic realization. As an industry leader with 28 years of dedicated expertise in UHPC/GRC/GRG/GRP materials, Qinglong Group deeply understands the importance, for engineering practice, of the differences between double-curved GRC panels and flat panels in strength testing. This article analyzes the unique characteristics of double-curved GRC panel strength testing from three aspects—principles, methods, and application scenarios—providing a professional reference for designers and owners.
1. Mechanical Principles: Stress Distribution Differences Caused by Curved Structures
The essential difference in strength testing between double-curved GRC panels and flat panels stems from the fundamental difference in their mechanical models. As planar load-bearing components, flat panels are tested mainly for unidirectional or bidirectional tensile and flexural performance; their stress state is relatively uniform, and flexural strength can be obtained directly through standard three-point bending tests (for example, Qinglong GRC flat panels routinely achieve test values above 20MPa). Double-curved GRC panels, on the other hand, owing to their radii of curvature (in some projects the minimum radius of curvature is ≤300mm), form complex three-dimensional stress fields during forming and loading; in addition to conventional bending stress, the superimposed effects of circumferential and radial stresses induced by the curved surface must also be considered. This composite stress state requires testing to simulate the constraint conditions after actual installation; otherwise, test results can easily become disconnected from actual in-service performance.
2. Testing Methods: Technical Upgrades from Static Single-Point to Dynamic Full-Field
Addressing the characteristics of double-curved GRC panels, Qinglong Group has achieved three major breakthroughs in testing methods: first, adopting 3D scanning technology to build precise digital models of components and, combined with finite element analysis, identifying weak areas in advance, avoiding the blindness of traditional random sampling; second, developing dedicated flexible fixtures to ensure uniform loading at every point of the curved surface during loading, solving the stress concentration problems caused by flat-panel test fixtures; third, introducing digital image correlation (DIC) technology to monitor the full-field strain distribution in real time during loading and capture the subtle features of curved-surface deformation. For example, in the Nanjing East Road Century Plaza renovation project, Qinglong used this method to verify the stress transfer paths of double-curved light-transmitting GRC panels under self-weight and wind loads, ensuring structural safety. By contrast, flat panel testing mostly uses standardized equipment and focuses more on quality stability inspection for mass production.
3. Application Scenarios: Dual Considerations from Functional Adaptation to Aesthetic Realization
The strength testing of double-curved GRC panels must be closely aligned with the characteristics of their application scenarios. In the double-curved exterior walls of high-end public buildings such as grand theaters and art museums, testing must focus on verifying long-term weather resistance (e.g., strength retention after 50 freeze-thaw cycles) and dynamic wind pressure resistance; in applications such as the irregular sunshades of commercial complexes, impact performance testing must be strengthened to simulate the effects of extreme weather such as hail. In the Dongguan Women and Children's Activity Center project, Qinglong Group developed a coupled "temperature-load" testing scheme for double-curved GRC curtain wall panels to ensure their long-term stability in Lingnan's hot and humid environment. Flat GRC panels are more often applied to standard walls, decorative moldings, and similar scenarios, where testing focuses on conventional physical properties and ease of installation. The difference between the two testing systems is precisely a reflection of matching material characteristics with application requirements.
As a national high-tech enterprise and a participant in formulating GRC industry standards, Qinglong Group has always maintained that scientific testing methods are the prerequisite for realizing the value of materials. The particularity of double-curved GRC panel strength testing is not only a technical challenge but also a practice of the mission of "creating beautiful architecture." Whether it is the ultra-high performance of UHPC, the acoustic optimization of GRG, or the corrosion resistance of GRP, Qinglong will rely on its full-chain technical capabilities to provide designers with integrated solutions from material selection to performance verification, so that every innovative design can be safely realized.
