Safeguarding Architectural Quality: An Analysis of GRC Component Non-Destructive Testing Technology and Engineering Practice
In the field of contemporary architectural decoration, GRC (glass fiber reinforced concrete) has become the material of choice for high-end projects such as grand theaters, commercial complexes, and landmark buildings, thanks to its lightweight, high-strength, and flexible formability. However, GRC components may contain internal defects arising during production and installation, and these hidden dangers directly affect building safety and service life. As the Qinglong Group with 28 years of industry experience, we know that non-destructive testing technology is a key link in ensuring GRC component quality. This article systematically analyzes mainstream non-destructive testing methods for GRC components and their engineering applications, providing professional technical reference for designers, owners, and contractors.
Non-Destructive Testing of GRC Components: The Invisible Line of Defense for Structural Safety
Non-destructive testing technology evaluates the internal quality of GRC components using physical methods without damaging component performance, and is a core part of the modern building quality control system. When undertaking benchmark projects such as the Dongguan Women and Children's Activity Center and the Nanjing Road Century Plaza renovation, Qinglong Group has always integrated non-destructive testing throughout the entire process, from detailed design and manufacturing to construction and installation. These technologies can not only accurately identify common defects such as air bubbles, cracks, and uneven fiber distribution, but also provide data support for later maintenance, reflecting the relentless pursuit of engineering quality expected of a National High-Tech Enterprise.
Four Mainstream Testing Technologies: Comprehensive Coverage from Laboratory to Construction Site
Ultrasonic testing technology, with its high sensitivity to internal defects, has become the preferred solution for non-destructive testing of GRC components. This technology emits high-frequency sound waves and determines whether there are voids or delamination inside a component based on echo signals, making it suitable for batch testing on production lines. Qinglong Group's production base in Nanning, Guangxi is equipped with fully automatic ultrasonic testing equipment, enabling 100% quality screening of GRC components within an annual production capacity of 600,000 square meters, and ensuring that every component leaving the factory complies with the "Technical Standard for Building Application of Glass Fiber Reinforced Cement (GRC)" (JGJ/T 423-2018).
The rebound hammer method, as a convenient means of surface hardness testing, is widely used on construction sites. Testers measure the surface hardness of GRC with a rebound hammer to indirectly estimate its compressive strength, making it particularly suitable for quality re-inspection of installed components. During the construction of overseas projects such as a commercial complex in Malaysia, the Qinglong technical team adopted the rebound method combined with core drilling sampling for comparison, effectively verifying that the GRC components met strength requirements and providing a reliable basis for quality control of transnational projects.
Electromagnetic induction testing technology precisely analyzes the glass fiber distribution in GRC. By measuring changes in electromagnetic parameters, it can directly reflect fiber content and orientation, avoiding structural weak points caused by uneven fiber distribution. In the "General Technical Conditions for Non-Load-Bearing Components of Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC)" (Plan No. 2024-0232T-JC), whose formulation Qinglong participated in, particular emphasis is placed on the application specifications of electromagnetic induction testing in the quality control of fiber-reinforced materials.
Infrared thermal imaging, as an emerging testing method, can quickly identify internal defects such as voids and debonding by capturing surface temperature differences of components. In the translucent concrete project at Nanjing Road Century Plaza, the Qinglong technical team innovatively combined infrared thermal imaging with light transmission performance testing, ensuring both structural integrity and the realization of the building's aesthetic effects. The project won the Silver Award in the first UHPC Architectural Engineering Innovation Award of the AALBORG WHITE Cup.
Full-Chain Quality Control: The Technical Accumulation of Qinglong's 28 Years of Experience
As a Vice Chairman Unit of the China GRC Association, Qinglong Group has deeply integrated non-destructive testing technology into its full-chain service system of "detailed design - manufacturing - construction and installation - after-sales maintenance." In the detailed design phase, BIM technology is used to simulate the stress states of components and predict potential defect risks; during production, combined ultrasonic and electromagnetic induction testing enables early defect detection and early treatment; during construction and installation, the rebound method and infrared thermal imaging are combined for on-site quality verification; and in the after-sales phase, maintenance records based on testing data are established to safeguard the building throughout its entire life cycle.
From domestic landmark projects to overseas projects in Southeast Asia, Qinglong Group has always translated non-destructive testing technology into a solid guarantee of engineering quality with a meticulous, excellence-driven attitude. Choosing Qinglong GRC is not only choosing a high-quality building material, but also choosing a full-chain quality control solution validated by 28 years of industry experience. On the road to pursuing architectural aesthetics and structural safety, Qinglong is willing to join hands with global partners to jointly create beautiful architecture and build industry benchmarks.
