How to Solve Thermal Expansion and Contraction in UHPC Curtain Walls: Analysis of Key Technologies and Practical Approaches

When architectural aesthetics meets materials science, UHPC curtain walls, with their ultra-high strength and exceptional plasticity, are becoming the "skin" of landmark buildings. However, the structural stress caused by thermal expansion and contraction, like a hidden "concealed injury" to the building, tests the boundaries of material application. As an industry leader with 28 years of deep expertise in UHPC/GRC/GRG/GRP materials, Qinglong Group will decode this "anti-deformation code" from material modification and structural design to construction techniques.

The "Inherent Challenge" of Thermal Deformation in UHPC Curtain Walls: The Contest Between Material Properties and Environmental Variables

Although Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC) is renowned for its compressive strength exceeding 200MPa, its thermal expansion coefficient is approximately 10-12×10⁻⁶/℃, which can still produce millimeter-level displacement under extreme temperature differences. In a coastal landmark project, curtain wall surface temperatures reached 60℃ in summer and dropped to -10℃ in winter, with a single temperature difference triggering nearly 3mm of linear deformation. If such deformation cannot be effectively released, it may lead to curtain wall cracking, sealant failure, and even structural safety hazards. When Qinglong Group participated in the renovation of Century Plaza on Nanjing East Road, it used BIM technology to simulate annual temperature field variations, accurately predicting the deformation trajectory of light-transmitting UHPC components and providing data support for the solution.

Material Modification: "Genetic Optimization" to Reduce Heat Sensitivity at the Source

To combat thermal expansion and contraction, Qinglong's first line of defense is innovation in material formulations. By incorporating nano-scale silica fume and steel fibers, the elastic modulus of UHPC was raised to 45GPa, while the thermal expansion coefficient was controlled below 8×10⁻⁶/℃, outperforming the industry average. At the production base in Nanning, Guangxi, laboratory tests with thermal cycling from -40℃ to 80℃ verified that the modified UHPC remained crack-free after 500 cycles. This "fatigue-resistant" property enables Qinglong UHPC curtain walls to perform excellently in projects in high temperature-difference regions such as Saudi Arabia, with deformation reduced by more than 30% compared to traditional concrete.

Structural Design: The "Buffering Art" of Dynamic Displacement

During the detailed design phase, Qinglong introduced the concept of "flexible connection" and developed a three-dimensionally adjustable bracket system. This system, combining stainless steel sliding bearings with elastic rubber pads, allows curtain wall panels to achieve displacement compensation of ±20mm in the X/Y/Z directions. In a convention and exhibition center project, a 5,000㎡ UHPC curtain wall adopted this design and successfully absorbed cumulative deformation caused by solar temperature differences. In addition, the application of BIM technology kept the installation precision of each curtain wall component within ±1mm, and combined with Rhino parametric modeling, ensured deformation coordination of complex curved curtain walls—a demonstration of Qinglong's technology integration capability as a national-level high-tech enterprise.

Construction Techniques: "Millimeter-Level Control" in On-Site Implementation

From production to installation, Qinglong has built a whole-process quality control system. At the Guangxi production base, automated production lines with an annual capacity of 600,000 square meters ensure component precision, with 3D scanning performing pre-delivery deformation inspection. During on-site installation, total station positioning and laser projection technology are used, combined with a "temperature-adaptive installation method"—carrying out key node construction during periods when the daily average temperature is within ±5℃—to reduce locked-in thermal stress. This rigorous craftsmanship has enabled the GRC curtain wall of the Dongguan Women and Children's Activity Center project, undertaken by Qinglong, to maintain a zero-repair record over 5 years of use, confirming the corporate motto of "meticulous attention to detail and the pursuit of excellence."

From material innovation to system integration, solving the thermal expansion and contraction problem of UHPC curtain walls fundamentally requires a deep understanding of the relationship between "rigid materials" and "dynamic environments." Building on 28 years of full-chain experience, Qinglong Group has transformed its technical standard-setting experience (participation in drafting the "General Technical Conditions for Non-Load-Bearing Components of Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC)") into practical solutions, providing designers with greater creative freedom and delivering building skins that combine aesthetics with durability for owners. In the field of new architectural decorative materials, this mindset of "anticipating problems upfront and systematizing solutions" is the core competitiveness behind Qinglong's leap from material supplier to "solution leader."
