Do Performance Requirements for GRC Materials Differ Across Climate Zones?—Analysis of GRC Material Performance Indicators Based on Environmental Adaptability

The environmental adaptability of building materials is the core code that determines whether a building's lifespan and aesthetics can coexist for the long term. In the field of new architectural decorative materials, GRC (Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete), with its lightweight, high-strength and flexible formability, has become the “skin” of numerous landmark buildings. However, the sunlight, rain and temperature of different climate zones, like invisible “quality inspectors,” place differentiated demands on the performance of GRC materials. As an industry leader with 28 years of deep expertise in UHPC/GRC/GRG/GRP materials, Qinglong Group will analyze in depth, from the perspective of environmental adaptability, the performance indicator system of GRC materials under different climatic conditions, providing designers and owners with a professional reference for scientific material selection.

Tropical High-Temperature and High-Humidity Environments: GRC Materials' “Enduring Battle Against Weathering”

In tropical regions such as Malaysia and Singapore, sustained high temperatures, high humidity and intense ultraviolet radiation are the primary challenges facing GRC materials. In such environments, materials must possess excellent UV aging resistance to ensure the surface does not yellow or chalk after long-term use. Qinglong GRC has optimized the interfacial bonding process between glass fibers and the cement matrix, maintaining over 80% flexural strength retention of the product, while adopting a special surface coating technology that raises the UV reflectance rate to 60%, effectively reducing internal stress caused by thermal expansion and contraction. In addition, to address the problem of mold growth in high-humidity environments, Qinglong has added a compound antibacterial agent to the material formula. Third-party testing shows an antibacterial rate exceeding 99%, ensuring a lasting clean exterior finish for buildings.

Frigid Cold Regions: The “Ultimate Freeze-Resistance Test” of GRC Materials

Freeze-thaw cycles in cold northern regions pose a severe test to the structural stability of GRC materials. When water in the material's pores freezes and expands, internal structural cracking can easily occur. Qinglong GRC controls the product's porosity below 15% by controlling the water-cement ratio and introducing nano-scale silica fume, while also employing air-entraining agent technology to form uniformly distributed micro air bubbles inside the concrete, buffering frost-heave pressure. Tests show that in temperature cycles from -40℃ to 50℃, Qinglong GRC has a strength loss rate of less than 10% after 300 freeze-thaw cycles, far outperforming the industry standard requirement of 25%. In addition, in response to the dry and windy conditions of northern regions, the material's wind load resistance has been simultaneously enhanced; the anchoring system's tensile load capacity can reach over 15kN, ensuring the safety of curtain wall systems in strong wind environments.

Coastal High-Salt-Spray Environments: Building the “Anti-Corrosion Barrier” of GRC Materials

Chloride ion erosion in coastal areas is an “invisible killer” of GRC material durability. Qinglong GRC uses low-alkali sulphoaluminate cement as the base material, combined with special salt-spray-resistant admixtures, reducing the material's chloride ion penetration coefficient to below 1.0×10⁻¹²m/s—achieving the highest grade of the Technical Standard for Building Application of Glass Fiber Reinforced Cement (GRC) (JGJ/T423-2018). In a coastal project in Saudi Arabia, Qinglong GRC components, after 5 years of natural exposure testing, showed no rust stains or spalling, with a rebar protective layer thickness loss of only 0.2mm/year, far below the industry average of 0.5mm/year. Meanwhile, silane coupling agent treatment on the glass fiber surface has further enhanced the material's resistance to seawater erosion.

Multi-Climate Zone Adaptation Solutions: Qinglong GRC's “Full-Chain Customized Services”

Faced with complex and diverse climatic conditions, a single performance indicator can hardly meet all needs. Relying on its national-level R&D center and provincial-level engineering technology center, Qinglong Group has established a “climate adaptability database,” which provides full-chain customized solutions covering material formulas, structural design and surface treatment based on parameters such as temperature, humidity, UV intensity and wind speed at the project site. For example, for transition zones between hot-humid and frigid regions, Qinglong has innovatively developed “gradient-functional GRC components,” achieving composite performance through layered design: thermal insulation in the inner layer, crack resistance in the middle layer, and weather resistance in the outer layer. As a participant in drafting the industry standard General Technical Conditions for Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC) Non-Load-Bearing Components, Qinglong has always taken environmental adaptability as the core indicator in material R&D, and has now formed a GRC solution system covering tropical, frigid, coastal and other multi-scenario applications.

Architecture is a dialogue between nature and humanity, and GRC materials are an important medium for this dialogue. From the shores of the South China Sea to the ice cities of the north, from bustling metropolises to foreign lands overseas, Qinglong GRC, with 28 years of technical accumulation, has integrated climate adaptability into the material's genes, allowing every building to maintain its original aesthetics and safety through the test of time. Looking ahead, Qinglong will continue to uphold its mission of “creating beautiful architecture,” empowering material innovation through technology and providing GRC solutions with greater environmental resilience for the global construction market.
