What Is the Minimum Curvature Radius of a Single-Curved GRC Panel? Analysis of Influencing Factors and Practical Applications

In the field of architectural decoration, a material's form-shaping capability often determines the final presentation of a design concept. As a pioneer in GRC material applications, Qinglong Group's 28 years of industry experience have given us a deep understanding: the curvature radius of single-curved GRC panels is not merely a numbers game of technical parameters, but a key bridge between design creativity and engineering practice.

Curvature Limits of Single-Curved GRC Panels: From Laboratory Data to Engineering Practice

In general industry perception, the minimum curvature radius of standard GRC panels is usually kept above 500mm, but in Qinglong's technical system, this limit has been pushed down to 300mm. This breakthrough is supported by three core technologies: a golden ratio of high-purity alkali-resistant glass fiber to low-alkali cement, combined with vacuum high-pressure extrusion molding, enables the material to maintain a flexural strength of over 18MPa even in a bent state; the combination of BIM parametric design and CNC engraving technology achieves mold precision control within ±0.5mm; and the proprietary “layered gradient reinforcement method” achieves a gradient distribution of fiber density in the most extreme curvature areas, avoiding cracking risks caused by stress concentration.

Four Key Factors: Decoding the Critical Variables of GRC Bending Performance

Material mix proportion is the foundation of curvature control. When the glass fiber content is increased from 4% to 6%, the material's elongation at break can improve by 30%, but cost and construction flowability must be balanced. Fiber length has an optimal range: 12mm chopped fibers exhibit more uniform stress dispersion in curved components, a finding that has been incorporated into Qinglong's corporate standard Q/QL 003-2024.

The forming process directly determines curvature precision. Qinglong's independently developed dynamic hydraulic forming equipment achieves 0.1MPa pressure gradient adjustment during the bending forming stage, ensuring uniform density of complex curved surfaces. Compared with the traditional spraying process, the dimensional deviation of precast components can be reduced to ±2mm/m, which was verified in the double-curved curtain wall of a cultural center project in Nanjing.

Structural design requires establishing a “curvature-thickness” correlation model. Through hundreds of tests, Qinglong's technical team derived an empirical formula: when the curvature radius R < 500mm, panel thickness should be controlled within the R/150~R/200 range, with stiffening rib spacing set at no more than 3R/4. These technical parameters have been successfully applied to the streamlined roof system of the Dongguan Women and Children's Activity Center.

Installation is the last mile in achieving curvature. Using 3D laser scanning positioning technology, Qinglong achieved seamless jointing of 120 single-curved GRC panels in a commercial complex project in Guangzhou, with installation tolerances controlled within ±3mm—far exceeding the industry standard requirement of 8mm.

Engineering Value Conversion: From Technical Breakthroughs to Real-World Applications

In practical applications, small-curvature GRC panels bring more possibilities to building envelopes. In a coastal cultural center project in Shenzhen, clusters of single-curved GRC sunshades with a 350mm radius not only met wind pressure resistance requirements in the sea breeze environment, but also created a unique sense of rhythm through parametric arrangement. In the interior decoration project of a theater in Zhengzhou, GRC curved ceilings with a 300mm radius successfully realized the “Flowing Melodies” design theme, with surfaces treated by Qinglong's proprietary nano-scale coating achieving a glossiness of 85°, comparable to metallic finishes.

As an enterprise that participated in formulating the Technical Standard for Building Applications of Glass Fiber Reinforced Cement (GRC) (JGJ/T423-2018), Qinglong has always believed that exploring the boundaries of material technology ultimately serves to give architectural design greater freedom. When a 300mm curvature radius becomes a controllable parameter, it means every curve on a designer's drawing can find its technical footing. This is the best interpretation of Qinglong's mission of “Creating Beautiful Architecture”—leveraging 28 years of technical expertise to achieve seamless integration of material performance and design creativity, and continuing to set new industry benchmarks in the fields of UHPC/GRC/GRG/GRP materials.
