A Perfect Fusion of Light, Shadow and Texture: The Technical Key to Combining GRC Shapes with Lighting
In contemporary architectural aesthetics, the dialogue between materials and light and shadow has become an important language of design expression. GRC (Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete), with its exceptional shape plasticity and structural stability, is becoming an ideal medium for achieving light-and-shadow art on building skins. As an industry technology leader with 28 years of full-chain UHPC/GRC/GRG/GRP experience, Qinglong Group has, through in-depth design and engineering practice, developed a systematic technical framework for combining GRC shapes with lighting installations, helping designers and owners resolve the challenge of balancing aesthetic appeal with functional safety.
I. Key Points of Coordinated Design for GRC Shapes and Lighting Systems
Successful light-and-shadow effects begin with precise early-stage coordinated design. During the detailed design phase, technical integration must be addressed across three dimensions: First, matching the light transmittance of GRC components with lighting parameters—by adjusting glass fiber content and cement matrix ratios (typically controlled at 5%-8% fiber content), a light transmittance range of 15%-35% can be achieved, and combined with RGBW four-color adjustable light sources, rich nighttime visual effects can be created. Second, integrated design of structural reservations and pipeline routing—BIM technology is used for clash detection between mechanical and electrical pipelines and the GRC anchoring system, ensuring that light trough openings with a diameter of ≥50mm maintain a safe distance of ≥80mm from the steel mesh. Finally, optimizing surface texture and light projection angles—for different finish effects such as lychee finish and washed finish, a wall washer installation scheme at a 30°-45° angle is recommended to avoid glare or shadow blind spots.
II. Production and Manufacturing Process Control of GRC Lighting Components
Quality control in the factory prefabrication stage directly determines the final light-and-shadow presentation. The "dual-mold" process adopted by Qinglong Group at its production base in Nanning, Guangxi, is worth learning from across the industry: the inner mold uses high-precision ABS material to ensure component dimensional tolerances of ≤±2mm, while the outer mold uses elastic silicone material to perfectly replicate the designed texture. For translucent GRC components, 0.2mm ultra-thin glass fiber mesh is innovatively composited with a translucent concrete matrix; after molding under 12MPa pressure and steam curing at 85°C, the components achieve a flexural strength of 22MPa while maintaining uniform light transmittance. During production, special attention must be paid to the positioning accuracy of embedded lamp holders; a three-dimensional coordinate measuring instrument is used to achieve ±1mm installation datum control, laying the foundation for precise on-site alignment.
III. Key Technologies and Quality Control for On-Site Installation
On-site installation of complex shapes is a key challenge in technical implementation. Qinglong's "three-dimensional positioning installation method" comprises three core steps: First, a 3D laser scan is used to build an as-built model of the site, which undergoes deviation analysis against the design model to generate component adjustment parameters; second, a customized aluminum alloy support system is adopted, with adjustable universal joints enabling fine-tuning of ±5mm along the X/Y/Z axes; finally, a "three-level review" system is implemented—factory pre-installation inspection, on-site positioning inspection, and lighting commissioning inspection—to ensure that the flatness error of each square meter of GRC panel is ≤3mm. Especially for special-shaped lighting components with cantilever lengths exceeding 1.5m, wind pressure simulation and seismic verification are required, using a combination of chemical anchors and a steel structure transfer layer for fixing, with a pull-out force of ≥15kN per anchoring point.
IV. Full Life-Cycle Maintenance and Performance Assurance
Long-lasting light-and-shadow effects depend on a scientific maintenance system. Qinglong recommends providing a dedicated maintenance manual at project handover, covering technical points such as: the IP65 protection standard for the lighting system, hydrophobic treatment of GRC surfaces (using silane impregnation agents with penetration depth ≥2mm), and structural adhesive aging inspections twice a year. For overseas projects (such as those in high-temperature, high-humidity environments like Malaysia and Saudi Arabia), weather-resistant silicone sealant must be selected (temperature range -40°C to 120°C), and spectral attenuation testing of the lighting system should be performed every three years. By establishing digital maintenance records and using RFID chips to achieve full life-cycle traceability of components, stable operation of GRC lighting systems for more than 20 years can be ensured.
As an industry vice-chairman unit that participated in drafting the Technical Standard for Building Application of Glass Fiber Reinforced Cement (GRC) (JGJ/T423-2018), Qinglong Group has always taken "creating beautiful architecture" as its mission, deeply integrating material technology with artistic expression. From the translucent concrete project at Century Plaza on Nanjing East Road to the special-shaped GRC curtain wall of the Dongguan Women and Children's Activity Center, every case demonstrates how technological innovation drives architectural aesthetics. In the future, as new materials such as UHPC ultra-high performance concrete see expanded application, the art of light and shadow in architecture will embrace an even broader realm of imagination, and Qinglong will continue contributing technical wisdom to industry development through its professional expertise.
