The durability and safety of building materials begin with precise control of every microscopic component. In the quality monitoring system of GRC panels, chloride ion content testing serves as a "safety sentinel," directly affecting the long-term stability and service life of building structures. As an industry participant with 28 years of deep engagement in the UHPC/GRC/GRG/GRP materials field, Qinglong will analyze the core methods and practical key points of chloride ion testing for GRC panels from a professional perspective, safeguarding engineering quality.
In the field of modern architectural decoration, GRC (glass fiber reinforced concrete) is widely used for exterior wall cladding panels and decorative components of grand theaters, commercial complexes, and landmark buildings thanks to its advantages of lightweight, high strength, and flexible styling. However, excessive chloride ion content in the material can cause serious problems such as steel reinforcement corrosion and structural cracking. As a national high-tech enterprise integrating detailed design, manufacturing, and construction installation, Qinglong has always regarded material performance testing as a key link in quality control, among which chloride ion content testing is the core indicator for controlling the durability of GRC panels.
Standard Methods and Technical Approaches for Chloride Ion Testing of GRC Panels
Currently, the mainstream chloride ion testing methods for GRC panels in the industry are mainly based on the Technical Standard for Building Application of Glass Fiber Reinforced Cement (GRC) (JGJ/T423-2018), adopting a combination of chemical analysis and instrumental analysis. Chemical analysis determines the water-soluble chloride ion content through silver nitrate titration, suitable for rapid screening; instrumental analysis uses ion chromatographs or X-ray fluorescence spectrometers to achieve precise quantification of trace chloride ions, with testing accuracy reaching 0.001%. Qinglong's production base in Nanning, Guangxi is equipped with a full set of testing equipment, ensuring that every batch of GRC panels undergoes strict chloride ion content testing and controlling material quality at the source.
Standardized Operating Procedures for Chloride Ion Testing
A professional testing procedure is the prerequisite for ensuring data accuracy. In its testing practice, Qinglong follows a four-step standardized process of "sampling - sample preparation - testing - analysis": first, representative samples are randomly drawn from different parts of the GRC panels, then crushed, ground, and passed through a 0.15mm sieve; next, water-soluble chloride ions are extracted using the water immersion method, with impurities removed through vacuum filtration; finally, quantitative analysis is completed with an automatic potentiometric titrator. It is worth noting that temperature and extraction time must be strictly controlled during testing to prevent cement hydration reactions from interfering with the results. As an enterprise that has participated in formulating multiple national and industry standards, Qinglong's testing procedures fully comply with the latest standard requirements such as the General Technical Conditions for Non-Load-Bearing Components of Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC).
Key Considerations During the Testing Process
Chloride ion testing requires attention to three core points: first, sample representativeness—sampling should avoid areas near embedded parts or surface coatings; second, blank test control—the chloride ion background values of distilled water and reagents must be measured simultaneously; third, data validity determination—the deviation between parallel test results must be controlled within 5%. Through more than 20 years of engineering practice, Qinglong has found that environmental humidity and curing conditions significantly affect the chloride ion migration rate of GRC panels; therefore, it is recommended to specify the curing history of samples and the testing environment parameters in the test report. For key projects, Qinglong also adopts core drilling sampling for on-site testing to ensure consistency between laboratory data and actual engineering conditions.
As vice chairman unit of the China GRC Association and a member of the International GRC Association, Qinglong has always treated every detail of material testing with a "meticulous and excellence-driven" attitude. By establishing a full-chain quality control system, from incoming raw material inspection to finished product testing before shipment, key indicators such as chloride ion content are controlled below 0.06% (far below the industry limit of 0.1%). In benchmark projects such as the Century Plaza renovation project on Nanjing East Road and the Dongguan Women and Children's Activity Center, the durability performance of Qinglong's GRC panels has been highly recognized by designers and owners. Going forward, Qinglong will continue to deepen innovation in testing technology, provide more professional technical support for the high-quality application of UHPC/GRC/GRG/GRP materials, and help realize the corporate mission of "creating beautiful architecture."
