How to Ensure the UV Resistance of GRC for Decorative Panels: Analysis of Key Technologies and Application Strategies

In the field of architectural decoration, material durability and aesthetics have always been the core concerns of designers and owners. As an ideal choice for exterior wall decoration and landscape modeling, GRC (Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete) is widely used in landmark buildings and commercial complexes thanks to its advantages of light weight, high strength, and flexible shaping. However, in long-term outdoor environments, ultraviolet (UV) exposure can cause problems such as surface fading and strength degradation, directly affecting a building's aesthetics and safety. This article provides an in-depth analysis of the UV-resistance assurance system for GRC decorative panels—from material formulation optimization and process innovation to application strategies—offering practical technical solutions for the industry.

I. Technical Pain Points and Industry Challenges of UV Resistance in GRC Materials

As a continuously present destructive factor in the natural environment, ultraviolet radiation affects GRC decorative panels in three main ways: first, it causes the decomposition of calcium hydroxide in cement-based materials, leading to surface powdering; second, it accelerates aging at the interface between glass fibers and the cement matrix, reducing structural strength; third, it fades pigments and degrades coatings, compromising the long-term stability of a building's appearance. This problem is especially pronounced in high-altitude areas with strong sunlight. According to industry research, untreated GRC components may show obvious aging after only 3-5 years of outdoor exposure, while premium projects typically require material durability exceeding 15 years—this gap drives continuous breakthroughs in UV-resistance technology.

II. Core Technology: Full-Chain Assurance from Material Formulation to Production Processes

As a GRC manufacturer with 28 years of experience, Qinglong has built a moat of UV resistance through an integrated "materials-process-testing" technology system. At the material level, high-purity Portland cement is blended with low-alkali sulfoaluminate cement to reduce the sensitivity of hydration products to UV rays; nano-scale silica and alumina powders are incorporated to optimize the matrix microstructure and improve impermeability and weathering resistance. For glass fibers, alkali-resistant glass fiber (AR glass fiber) is selected, with a ZrO₂ content of ≥16%, effectively resisting the combined attack of the cement's alkaline environment and UV radiation to ensure long-term mechanical stability.

In terms of production processes, Qinglong has innovatively adopted "vacuum high-pressure extrusion molding + steam curing" technology, increasing the density of GRC components by more than 20%, reducing porosity, and blocking the penetration paths of UV rays and moisture. In the surface treatment stage, a special silane-modified acrylic coating has been developed; bonded to the matrix at the molecular level, this coating forms a transparent protective film 50-80 μm thick that preserves GRC's natural texture while reflecting more than 90% of UV rays. It also features self-cleaning properties, reducing the aesthetic impact of dust accumulation.

III. Application Strategies: Scenario Adaptation and Full Life-Cycle Management

Differences in UV intensity across application scenarios require differentiated strategies for GRC decorative panels. In tropical regions or on the exterior facades of high-rise buildings, a "dual-layer protection system" is recommended: the base layer is reinforced with alkali-resistant glass fiber, and the surface is combined with a 0.5 mm thin layer of UHPC (Ultra-High Performance Concrete), leveraging UHPC's ultra-high density and UV resistance for double assurance. For low-level components such as garden landscape features, iron-oxide-based inorganic pigments can be added and organic color pastes reduced, lowering the risk of fading at the source.

As a national high-tech enterprise, Qinglong has established a comprehensive full life-cycle service system. In the early project stage, weatherability prediction reports are provided to clients through climate simulation tests (such as QUV accelerated aging tests); during construction, BIM technology is used for precise installation positioning to minimize protective layer damage caused by on-site cutting; in the after-sales stage, regular inspection and maintenance plans are offered, including surface coating repair and structural performance testing, ensuring that GRC decorative panels remain in optimal condition throughout long-term use.

From the curved GRC curtain wall of a commercial complex in Qianhai, Shenzhen, to the outdoor landscape components of a resort hotel in Sanya, Hainan, Qinglong has completed GRC projects totaling over 600,000 square meters through continuous innovation in UV-resistance technology. Looking ahead, with the deepening practice of its mission to "create beautiful buildings," Qinglong will continue to integrate the advantages of UHPC, GRG, and other materials, providing designers with more durable and expressive decorative solutions and promoting the application of new architectural decoration materials in green building and sustainable development.
