Compactness Standards of High-Performance GRC Curtain Walls and Their Practical Application

The compactness of a curtain wall is the invisible guardian of building safety and aesthetics.

In contemporary architectural curtain wall technology, GRC (Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete) has become the preferred material for landmark building envelopes thanks to its lightweight, high-strength nature and flexible formability. However, the long-term performance and safety of GRC curtain walls have always been deeply tied to the core indicator of "compactness." As an industry participant with 28 years of dedicated experience in the UHPC/GRC/GRG/GRP materials field, Qinglong Group will analyze the key value of compactness in high-performance GRC curtain walls from three dimensions: technical standards, practical application, and full-chain assurance.

1. The Technical Core of GRC Curtain Wall Compactness: From Material Formulation to Testing Standards

Compactness is the core indicator measuring the density of the internal structure of GRC materials, directly affecting their impermeability, durability, and mechanical performance. According to the Technical Standard for Building Applications of Glass Fiber Reinforced Cement (GRC) (JGJ/T423-2018), high-performance GRC curtain walls must achieve an apparent density of ≥1800kg/m³, a water absorption rate of ≤8%, and pass 200 freeze-thaw cycles without cracking. This standard was formulated based on empirical research on thousands of engineering cases conducted by Qinglong during its participation in drafting national industry standards—GRC components with insufficient compactness are prone to fiber corrosion and strength degradation in humid environments, while compliant products can achieve a service life of over 50 years.

The key to achieving high compactness lies in optimizing the material system: Qinglong uses custom-grade sulphoaluminate cement and alkali-resistant glass fibers, combined with its self-developed high-efficiency water reducer, and through a vacuum extrusion molding process keeps the internal porosity of the material below 3%. Compared with traditional spraying processes, this technology increases the flexural strength of GRC curtain walls by 40% while reducing the surface defect rate to below 0.5‰, providing structural reliability for complex-shaped curtain walls.

2. Compactness Control in Engineering Practice: Full-Process Management from Production to Installation

In the Dongguan Women and Children's Activity Center project, the Qinglong team faced the compactness challenge of double-curved GRC curtain walls. The project adopted parametrically designed double-curved panels (minimum radius of curvature 350mm), and traditional casting processes tended to cause local air bubble accumulation. By introducing BIM technology to simulate concrete flow paths and installing micro-vibrating devices inside the molds, the project ultimately achieved a 99.8% compactness compliance rate for components, earning it the "Silver Award of the First GRC Construction Engineering Innovation Award (AALBORG WHITE Cup)."

Compactness assurance at the installation stage is equally critical. Qinglong's original "3D laser scanning + modular installation" process calibrates each GRC curtain wall panel with precision (error ≤2mm), ensuring that sealant at the joints is fully filled and effectively preventing rainwater penetration from eroding the internal structure. In the Nanjing East Road Century Plaza renovation project, the composite application of translucent concrete and GRC curtain walls achieved a balance between structural safety and light transmission precisely through compactness control technology.

3. Qinglong's Full-Chain Service: Systematic Capabilities Safeguarding Compactness

As a national-level high-tech enterprise, Qinglong has built a full-chain compactness assurance system covering detailed design through after-sales maintenance. In the design phase, finite element analysis software is used to optimize curtain wall load-bearing joints; in production, German-imported production lines enable intelligent monitoring of material ratios, molding pressure, and curing temperature; during construction, every batch of components undergoes ultrasonic flaw detection for compactness; and in the after-sales phase, a 10-year periodic inspection mechanism has been established, using drone patrols and infrared thermal imaging to identify potential defects.

From European-style moldings in real estate projects to special-shaped curtain walls in municipal engineering, Qinglong's 28 years of professional experience prove that the compactness of high-performance GRC curtain walls is not merely a numerical expression of technical standards, but the cornerstone of building safety and aesthetic value. Looking ahead, with the development of UHPC/GRC composite technology, Qinglong will continue to promote the deep integration of compactness control and green building materials, providing designers and owners with solutions that combine safety, durability, and artistic expression.
