Research on Prevention Strategies and Technical Measures for Freeze-Thaw Damage of GRC Exterior Walls in Severe Cold Regions
In the field of architectural decoration materials, GRC (Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete), with its advantages of light weight, high strength, and rich styling, has been widely used in high-end projects such as grand theaters, commercial complexes, and landmark buildings. However, in severe cold regions, GRC exterior walls have long faced the severe test of freeze-thaw cycles, and how to effectively prevent freeze-thaw damage has become a focus of industry attention. Qinglong Group, with 28 years of full-chain experience in UHPC/GRC/GRG/GRP materials, here shares a systematic solution for freeze-thaw damage of GRC exterior walls in severe cold regions based on engineering practice.
I. Analysis of the Causes of Freeze-Thaw Damage to GRC Exterior Walls in Severe Cold Regions
Freeze-thaw damage is one of the main defects of GRC exterior walls in severe cold regions. Its essence is that water in the internal pores of the material freezes and expands at low temperatures, and repeated cycles gradually degrade the structure. Through follow-up studies of multiple GRC projects in northern China, Qinglong Group found that the main causes of freeze-thaw damage include unreasonable material mix ratios, production process defects, non-standard construction and installation, and lack of later maintenance. For example, if the cement content in the GRC matrix is too high or the glass fiber content is insufficient, the material will lack compactness and water can easily penetrate; improper sealing of anchor fittings during installation can cause rainwater backflow, accelerating the freeze-thaw process.
II. Frost-Resistance Optimization Strategies for GRC Material Formulations
As a professional GRC manufacturer, Qinglong Group addresses frost resistance in a targeted manner at the material R&D stage. It adopts 'dual-admixture technology' to optimize the matrix formulation: on the one hand, high-quality fly ash and slag powder are added to replace part of the cement, reducing hydration heat and improving compactness; on the other hand, a special antifreeze agent and polypropylene fibers are introduced to enhance the crack resistance and toughness of the material. Testing shows that the frost resistance of Qinglong GRC products can withstand more than 200 freeze-thaw cycles at -40℃, far exceeding industry standards. In addition, by adjusting the length and distribution of the glass fibers, the fibers form a three-dimensional network structure in the matrix, effectively suppressing the initiation and propagation of microcracks.
III. Quality Control Points for the Whole-Process Construction Technique
In the manufacturing stage, Qinglong Group uses an automated spray-up molding process to ensure the uniformity and compactness of GRC components. During the curing stage, a 'gradient curing method' is implemented: components are first cured for 7 days in a constant-humidity environment at 20℃, and then transferred to a low-temperature environment at -10℃ for pretreatment, simulating material performance changes under severe cold climates. During construction and installation, the 'three waterproofing barriers' measures are strictly enforced: joints between components are filled with elastic sealant, a breathable drainage cavity is provided at the back, and water-stop rings are added at the anchor fitting nodes. These technical details enable Qinglong GRC exterior walls to exhibit excellent frost resistance in projects in severe cold cities such as Harbin and Shenyang.
IV. Establishment and Practice of a Long-Term Maintenance System
Qinglong Group proposes the 'full life-cycle service' concept and has established a special maintenance plan for GRC exterior walls in severe cold regions. Before the onset of winter each year, a technical team is dispatched to conduct a comprehensive inspection of the project, focusing on checking for hidden dangers such as sealant aging and drainage system blockages. For components with minor freeze-thaw damage, Qinglong's patented repair technology is used to restore structural performance through epoxy grouting and carbon fiber cloth reinforcement. In a cultural center project in Xinjiang, this maintenance system kept the GRC exterior walls intact after 10 years of use, confirming the durability advantages of Qinglong GRC products.
As a national high-tech enterprise and a drafting unit of GRC industry standards, Qinglong Group has always taken 'creating beautiful architecture' as its mission, deeply integrating material innovation with engineering practice. Facing the special environmental challenges of severe cold regions, we provide a systematic solution for freeze-thaw prevention of GRC exterior walls through a three-dimensional strategy of optimizing material formulations, strictly controlling construction processes, and establishing a maintenance system. In the future, Qinglong will continue to focus on the technological R&D of UHPC/GRC/GRG/GRP materials, providing designers and owners with more reliable and innovative architectural decoration material options.
