How to Handle the Thickness of Corner GRC Components — Design Standards and Construction Key Points Explained

The thickness treatment of GRC components at corners is the golden balance between architectural aesthetics and structural safety.

In the field of modern architectural decoration, GRC (Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete), with its lightweight, high-strength, and flexible molding characteristics, has become the preferred material for high-end projects such as commercial complexes and landmark buildings. However, corner positions, as the visual focal points of building facades and critical structural stress nodes, often make the thickness design of GRC components a core challenge for designers and contractors. Qinglong Group, an industry leader with 28 years of deep expertise in UHPC/GRC/GRG/GRP materials, drawing on its experience in participating in the formulation of the "Technical Standard for Building Application of Glass Fiber Reinforced Cement (GRC)" (JGJ/T423-2018), analyzes the key points of thickness treatment for GRC components at corners from the dual perspectives of design specifications and construction practice.

I. Regulatory Basis for Thickness Design of GRC Components at Corners

According to industry standards, the thickness of GRC components must comprehensively consider structural loads, shape complexity, and installation methods. Ordinary flat GRC components are typically 8-15mm thick, while corner positions, which need to withstand bidirectional stress, require a thickness increase of 20%-30%. Taking the Century Plaza renovation project on Nanjing East Road, in which Qinglong participated, as an example, its curved corner components adopted a 12mm base thickness with an additional 3mm reinforcement layer, which not only met the double-curved shape requirements but also improved the flexural strength to over 20MPa through optimized fiber distribution, far exceeding the 15MPa required by the standard.

II. Three Core Factors Affecting Corner Thickness

1. Structural Stress Analysis: Right-angle corners require focused consideration of positive and negative wind pressure loads, with a recommended thickness of 15-20mm; curved corners (curvature radius ≤300mm) require calculation through finite element simulation, such as Qinglong's self-developed BIM parametric design system, which can precisely output thickness gradient values for different curvatures.

2. Shape Complexity: Hollow relief or irregularly shaped corner components should adopt local thickening treatment at weak points. For example, for the hyperbolic relief corners of a cultural center project, Qinglong added 5mm of thickness at the relief protrusions and embedded glass fiber mesh, effectively solving the stress concentration problem.

3. Installation and Fixing Methods: Back-bolted installation requires a thickness of no less than 18mm within 50mm around the anchoring points, while the wet-adhesion method can be appropriately reduced to 12mm, but the bonding strength needs to be enhanced with reinforced interface agents.

III. Key Points of Thickness Control During the Construction Phase

In the Dongguan Women and Children's Activity Center project, Qinglong innovatively adopted a "3D scanning + modular prefabrication" process: first, laser scanning was used to obtain precise corner dimensions; dedicated molds were used during factory prefabrication to control thickness errors within ±1mm; and trial assembly was carried out before on-site installation, adjusting the positions of embedded parts to ensure a uniform thickness transition. This full-process control approach achieved an installation precision of 0.5mm/m for corner GRC components, far exceeding the industry standard of 3mm/m.

The thickness treatment of GRC components at corners is both a technical issue and an artistic expression. As a national "Specialized, Refined, Distinctive, and Innovative" enterprise, Qinglong has always deeply integrated material performance with architectural aesthetics. Through 28 years of accumulated full-chain experience, it has formed an integrated solution from design deepening to after-sales maintenance. Whether for super high-rise curtain wall corners or irregular nodes of cultural buildings, Qinglong can provide customized GRC products that balance both safety and aesthetics, helping designers bring their creative visions to life and giving buildings more lasting vitality.
