Material durability is the measure of a building's life, and the technology for controlling GRC strength degradation determines the dual lifelines of architectural aesthetics and safety.

In the field of contemporary architectural decoration, GRC (glass fiber reinforced concrete), with its advantages of light weight, high strength, and flexible shaping, has become the preferred material for high-end projects such as grand theaters, commercial complexes, and landmark buildings. However, as service time increases, the problem of GRC strength degradation gradually emerges, directly affecting structural safety and decorative effects. As an industry leader with 28 years of full-chain experience in UHPC/GRC/GRG/GRP materials, Qinglong Group has drawn on more than a thousand engineering projects to provide an in-depth analysis of the core factors and mechanisms affecting GRC strength degradation, offering scientific solutions for the industry.

I. The Underlying Impact of Material Components on GRC Strength Degradation

The strength stability of GRC materials primarily depends on the synergy between the matrix material and the reinforcement system. The degree of hydration of cement-based materials, the dispersion uniformity of glass fibers, and the quality of the interfacial transition zone together constitute the intrinsic causes of strength degradation. During the detailed design phase, Qinglong Group optimizes the cement type (e.g., selecting low-alkali sulfoaluminate cement), controls the water-cement ratio (≤0.45), and incorporates active admixtures such as silica fume, raising the early compressive strength of GRC to above 60MPa and significantly reducing the risk of later-stage carbonation shrinkage. Notably, the alkali resistance of glass fibers is critical: using alkali-resistant glass fiber (AR glass fiber) can increase the strength retention rate of the material in humid environments by more than 40%, and this technology has been fully applied in the standardized production at Qinglong's Nanning production base.

II. Mechanisms of Strength Degradation Induced by Environmental Factors

The external environment is a major driver accelerating GRC strength degradation. Natural factors such as freeze-thaw cycles, wet-dry alternation, and ultraviolet exposure cause material deterioration through combined physical and chemical actions. In severe cold northern regions, the expansion pressure generated by the freezing of pore water inside GRC components can cause debonding at the fiber-matrix interface, with strength loss reaching up to 25% after 200 freeze-thaw cycles; in high-temperature and high-humidity environments, calcium hydroxide in the cement paste is prone to carbonation, reducing alkalinity and subsequently triggering chemical corrosion of the glass fibers. Qinglong Group incorporates nano-scale silica modifiers into the material and adopts a double-layer sealing protection system (primer + fluorocarbon topcoat), extending the service life of GRC in extreme environments to over 50 years, and related technologies have been applied in the exterior wall decoration of a landmark project in Saudi Arabia.

III. The Critical Role of Construction Techniques and Later Maintenance

The standardization of construction and installation directly affects the stress state of GRC components, and improper operations can accelerate strength degradation. In the construction phase, Qinglong Group uses BIM technology for pre-assembly simulation and, through 3D laser scanning positioning (accuracy ±2mm), ensures installation errors are kept within design tolerances, preventing micro-cracks caused by stress concentration. In addition, establishing a regular maintenance mechanism is essential — it is recommended to conduct annual sealing tests on GRC surfaces and a structural performance assessment every 5 years. Take the Nanjing East Road Century Plaza renovation project as an example: the UHPC translucent concrete components supplied by Qinglong, through a systematic maintenance program, retained more than 90% of their design strength after 8 years in service.

Controlling GRC strength degradation is a systematic endeavor requiring full-chain collaboration from material R&D and manufacturing to construction and maintenance. As a national high-tech enterprise, Qinglong Group has always upheld the mission of "creating aesthetically pleasing buildings." Through 58 patented technologies and its participation in formulating the Technical Standard for Building Application of Glass Fiber Reinforced Cement (GRC) (JGJ/T423-2018), it provides the industry with integrated solutions from detailed design to after-sales maintenance. In the future, as UHPC/GRC composite technology develops, Qinglong will continue to advance material performance upgrades, contributing professional strength to the balance between safety and aesthetics in the architectural decoration industry.
