The Hidden Killer of Building Safety: Risks of Excessive Chloride Ion Content in GRC Materials and Full-Chain Prevention and Control Strategies

In the field of modern architectural decoration, GRC (Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete) has become the preferred material for high-end projects such as grand theaters, commercial complexes, and landmark buildings, thanks to its lightweight high strength and rich design versatility. However, the control of intrinsic material quality directly affects building safety and durability, and the problem of excessive chloride ion content acts like a hidden "time bomb" that may cause irreversible damage to building structures. As an industry-leading enterprise with 28 years of full-chain experience in UHPC/GRC/GRG/GRP materials, Qinglong Group will provide professional solutions for designers, owners, and engineering parties from three dimensions: risk mechanisms, prevention and control technologies, and industry practices.

Three Core Risks of Excessive Chloride Ion Content in GRC Materials

The harm of chloride ions to GRC materials is hidden and cumulative, with risks mainly manifested in three aspects: First, structural safety issues caused by steel reinforcement corrosion. When the chloride ion concentration in GRC components exceeds the threshold (usually 0.06%), it destroys the passivation film on the steel reinforcement surface, causing corrosive expansion, which in turn leads to component cracking and reduced load-bearing capacity, and in severe cases may trigger safety accidents such as curtain wall detachment. Second, the rapid deterioration of material durability: chloride ion penetration accelerates the carbonation process of the cement matrix, significantly reducing the flexural strength and impact resistance of GRC and shortening the material's service life by more than 30%. In addition, excessive chloride ions also corrode glass fibers, weakening their reinforcing effect, reducing material toughness, and increasing the risk of fracture during construction and installation.

Full-Chain Prevention and Control System: Quality Management from Source to Application

Based on the technical expertise of its national-level R&D center, Qinglong Group has established a three-tier prevention and control system of "source control – process monitoring – finished product inspection." At the raw material stage, low-chloride cement (chloride ion content ≤0.03%) and alkali-free glass fibers are strictly selected; a specialized aggregate washing process is adopted to reduce impurity chloride content; and mix proportion design is optimized through orthogonal tests to ensure the compatibility of cementitious materials and admixtures. During production, online ion chromatography monitoring technology is used to monitor the chloride ion concentration of the concrete mixture in real time, combined with an automated metering system to achieve precise batching, keeping errors within ±0.01%. At the finished product inspection stage, testing procedures exceeding industry standards are implemented, including core sampling to determine the chloride ion diffusion coefficient, ensuring that the chloride ion content of ex-factory products is ≤0.05%, meeting the Grade I requirements of the Technical Standard for Glass Fiber Reinforced Cement (GRC) Building Applications (JGJ/T423-2018).

Preventive Measures and Industry Practice: Technical Accumulation from Qinglong's 28 Years of Experience

For different application scenarios, Qinglong Group provides customized preventive solutions: for projects in coastal high-humidity environments, composite anti-corrosion technology is adopted, optimizing the pore structure by incorporating mineral admixtures such as mineral powder and silica fume to reduce the chloride ion penetration rate; for large GRC curtain wall systems, an innovative dual barrier of "electrochemical protection + coating isolation" is applied, with polysiloxane anti-corrosion coatings applied to component surfaces and sacrificial anodes installed on the steel reinforcement frames, forming a long-lasting protection mechanism. As a participating drafting unit of the industry standard General Technical Requirements for Non-Load-Bearing Components of Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC), Qinglong has extended its GRC chloride ion control technology to material systems such as UHPC/GRG/GRP—for example, adopting vinyl resin matrices in GRP products to block chloride ion transmission pathways at the molecular structure level. To date, Qinglong has successfully applied this prevention and control system in over 300 key projects nationwide, including benchmark projects such as the Nanning International Convention and Exhibition Center expansion project and Terminal 3 of Guangzhou Baiyun Airport, achieving a 15-year zero-corrosion record for GRC components.

Quality control of building materials is the cornerstone of engineering safety. Qinglong Group has always taken "Creating Beautiful Architecture" as its mission, transforming 28 years of technical accumulation into full-chain quality assurance capabilities. Through precise chloride ion prevention and control technology, it provides safety support for designers to realize their creative visions and builds architectural works for owners that combine aesthetics with durability. In the field of new architectural decoration materials, only by integrating professionalism and rigor into every detail can architectural classics that stand the test of time be created.
