Non-Destructive Testing Methods for GRC Components and Application Analysis

In the field of architectural decoration, GRC components, with their lightweight, high-strength, and richly formable characteristics, have become the “finishing touch” of many landmark buildings. However, as an important guarantee of building safety and quality, non-destructive testing technology for GRC components is often overlooked. Qinglong Group, a national high-tech enterprise with 28 years of full-chain experience in UHPC/GRC/GRG/GRP materials, has always regarded component quality testing as a core link in project delivery. This article systematically analyzes mainstream non-destructive testing methods for GRC components and their engineering applications, providing professional technical reference for designers and owners.

Non-Destructive Testing of GRC Components: The Invisible Line of Defense for Building Safety

Non-destructive testing technology evaluates the internal quality of components through non-destructive means, avoiding damage to finished products while accurately identifying potential defects. Throughout the entire process of GRC component production and installation, non-destructive testing runs through every stage from raw material inspection to completion acceptance. The Technical Standard for Architectural Application of Glass Fiber Reinforced Cement (GRC) (JGJ/T423-2018), which Qinglong Group participated in drafting, clearly stipulates that large GRC curtain wall components must undergo systematic non-destructive testing before leaving the factory—a requirement that has become an important basis for industry quality control.

Four Mainstream Testing Methods: Technical Principles and Application Scenarios

1. Ultrasonic Testing: The “X-Ray Vision” for Internal Defects

Ultrasonic testing utilizes the propagation characteristics of high-frequency sound waves in materials, analyzing reflected wave signals to identify internal defects such as voids and delamination. This technology is suitable for thickness measurement of GRC components (with accuracy up to ±0.5mm) and internal defect location, playing a key role particularly in the quality control of large hyperbolic panels and openwork relief components. In the Century Plaza renovation project on Nanjing East Road, Qinglong Group used ultrasonic testing to ensure the uniformity of internal fiber distribution in light-transmitting concrete GRC components, guaranteeing a balance between light-transmitting effect and structural strength.

2. Rebound Method Testing: The “Rapid Diagnostic Tool” for Surface Strength

Based on the correlation between concrete surface hardness and strength, the rebound method estimates the surface compressive strength of GRC components by measuring rebound values. This method is easy to operate and highly efficient, making it suitable for preliminary screening of batch components. Qinglong's production base uses an automated rebound testing system, with a sampling coverage rate of 30% for each batch of GRC components, ensuring product strength meets the requirements of the Glass Fiber Reinforced Cement (GRC) Decorative Products standard (JC/T940-2022). It should be noted that rebound method results need to be corrected for carbonation depth, and surface drying treatment is required when testing in humid environments.

3. Electromagnetic Induction Testing: The “Scanner” for Rebar and Fiber Distribution

Electromagnetic induction technology evaluates the rationality of structural reinforcement by detecting the position and quantity of metal embedded parts (such as rebar mesh and anchors) inside GRC components. For complex components such as GRC Roman columns and cornices in European classical-style buildings, this technology can effectively verify whether rebar cover thickness meets design requirements. In the Dongguan Women and Children's Activity Center project, Qinglong used electromagnetic induction testing to ensure that the rebar anchoring depth error of GRC decorative lines was controlled within ±5mm, avoiding cracking risks caused by insufficient reinforcement.

4. Infrared Thermal Imaging Testing: The “Thermal Map Identifier” for Debonding Defects

Utilizing differences in material thermal conductivity, infrared thermal imaging technology can quickly identify debonding defects between GRC components and the substrate. During curtain wall installation acceptance, this method can test the bonding quality of large-area components in a non-contact manner, and is especially suitable for installation quality control of curved GRC cladding panels. In a commercial complex project in Malaysia, Qinglong's overseas project team discovered three hidden debonding defects through infrared thermal imaging testing, and timely rework avoided the risk of later detachment.

Engineering Practice of Testing Technology: Qinglong's Full-Process Quality Control

As a participant in drafting GRC industry standards, Qinglong Group has established a “three-stage testing system”: ultrasonic testing of glass fiber length and dispersion upon raw material entry; monitoring of curing strength development through the rebound method during production; and combined infrared thermal imaging and electromagnetic induction testing for completion acceptance after installation. This system has been validated in real estate projects such as Poly and China Overseas, keeping the first-pass acceptance rate of Qinglong GRC components above 99.6%.

As architectural decoration develops toward greater complexity and personalization, non-destructive testing technology for GRC components will play an increasingly important role. Qinglong Group will continue exploring the application of new technologies such as AI visual inspection and microwave flaw detection in the GRC field, and with the quality philosophy of “meticulousness and the pursuit of excellence,” provide GRC solutions that combine aesthetic value and structural safety for global building projects. Choosing a professional GRC manufacturer is not just choosing a product, but choosing a quality assurance system that runs through the entire life cycle.
