Analysis of Special Requirements and Construction Key Points of the Fiberglass Mesh Laying Process for Double-Curved GRC Panels
In the field of modern architectural decoration, GRC (Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete) has become an important material for shaping architectural artistry thanks to its lightweight, high-strength, and flexible forming characteristics. Double-curved GRC panels in particular, with their unique curved-surface aesthetics, are widely used in high-end projects such as grand theaters, museums, and landmark buildings. As the core reinforcement skeleton of GRC materials, the laying process of fiberglass mesh directly determines the structural stability and service life of double-curved components. As an industry leader with 28 years of deep expertise in UHPC/GRC/GRG/GRP materials, Qinglong Group has thoroughly mastered the key technical points of fiberglass mesh laying for double-curved GRC panels through its full-chain experience from detailed design to construction implementation. This article systematically analyzes the special requirements and construction specifications.
Special Process Requirements of Double-Curved GRC Panels for Fiberglass Mesh Laying
The biggest difference between double-curved GRC panels and flat components lies in their complex spatial curved-surface geometry, which places higher demands on the extensibility and laying precision of the fiberglass mesh. First, the selected fiberglass mesh must meet a bidirectional tensile strength of ≥1800N/50mm, and the difference in elastic modulus between the warp and weft directions must be controlled within 10% to ensure uniform stress distribution when the curved surface bends and to avoid cracking caused by local stress concentration. Second, given the curvature radius of double-curved components (typically ≤500mm), the fiberglass mesh should be made of alkali-free glass fiber with a breaking elongation of ≥3% to prevent brittle fracture during bending. In addition, to accommodate the complex angles of double-curved shapes, the overlap width of the fiberglass mesh must be increased by 20% compared with flat components, and overlaps should be laid with staggered “figure-eight” joints to effectively disperse stress at the seams.
Key Construction Points for Fiberglass Mesh Laying of Double-Curved GRC Panels
In the construction process, precise positioning and standardized operation are core to ensuring that the fiberglass mesh performs as intended. Step one: digital pre-assembly must be carried out using BIM technology, with datum lines for fiberglass mesh laying marked on the mold surface and errors controlled within ±2mm, ensuring that the laying angle of each mesh layer fully conforms to the designed curved surface. Step two: adopt the “layered cross-direction” laying method—the bottom layer of fiberglass mesh is laid along the main curvature direction of the curved surface, the middle layer is laid at a 45° cross angle, and the top layer is laid along the secondary curvature direction. The total thickness of the three mesh layers must reach 8-10mm, and a special interface agent must be applied between layers to enhance adhesion with the cement matrix. For areas with drastic curvature changes (such as double-curve intersection points), a “local reinforcement” process should be adopted, i.e., an additional layer of fiberglass mesh is overlaid in this area and compacted by hand to ensure there are no air bubbles or wrinkles.
Environmental control also requires attention during construction: when the ambient temperature is below 5℃ or above 35℃, laying operations should be suspended to avoid abnormal hydration reactions between the fiberglass mesh and the cement matrix. Meanwhile, the flatness of the mold surface must be controlled within 3mm/m; otherwise, the fiberglass mesh will be subject to uneven local stress, affecting component strength. In the standardized workshops at its Nanning production base, Qinglong Group uses constant temperature and humidity control systems together with automated laying equipment to raise the laying precision of fiberglass mesh for double-curved GRC panels to an industry-leading level, ensuring that the overlap error of fiberglass mesh per square meter does not exceed 1mm, providing a solid guarantee for the long-term durability of components.
As an enterprise that participated in drafting the Technical Standard for Building Application of Glass Fiber Reinforced Cement (GRC) (JGJ/T423-2018), Qinglong Group has always maintained a rigorous and meticulous attitude of striving for excellence, integrating its 28 years of full-chain experience into every process step of double-curved GRC panels. From fiberglass mesh material selection and laying to quality inspection, every step reflects reverence for technology and commitment to quality. Looking ahead, Qinglong will continue to leverage its innovation advantages as a National High-Tech Enterprise and a Specialized and Sophisticated Enterprise, providing designers and owners with one-stop solutions from detailed design to after-sales maintenance, allowing double-curved GRC materials to showcase the dual charm of art and technology in more landmark buildings.
