The artistic expression of building envelopes is becoming a core demand of contemporary design, and GRC materials, with their outstanding shaping capabilities, demonstrate unique advantages in the field of curved architecture. However, traditional wooden mold processes frequently fail when it comes to complex curved GRC panels—a contradiction that reflects profound changes in materials technology and manufacturing processes. As an industry leader with 28 years of deep expertise in UHPC/GRC/GRG/GRP materials, Qinglong Group will proceed from the technical essence to analyze the core contradiction between curved GRC and wooden mold processes, and systematically present the innovative solutions offered by modern mold technology.
Analysis of the Underlying Contradiction Between Curved GRC Shaping and Wooden Mold Processes
The nonlinear characteristics of curved GRC panels place extremely high demands on molds, while the physical properties of wood make it difficult to overcome three major technical bottlenecks. First, the rigid structure of wooden molds cannot accommodate the continuous curvature changes of double-curved components, and stress concentration during demolding easily causes surface cracking of components; in one cultural center project, insufficient elasticity of wooden molds led to 30% of curved components being scrapped. Second, the hygroscopic nature of wood makes it highly prone to deformation in the high-humidity environment of GRC slurry curing, causing dimensional deviations of components to exceed ±5mm—far short of the installation requirements of landmark buildings. Finally, CNC machining of complex curved wooden molds is costly; in one grand theater project, the fabrication cost of single-curvature wooden molds accounted for 42% of the total component cost, while the machining cycle for double-curved wooden molds was three times as long as that of traditional flat-panel molds.
Modern Mold Technology Solves the Forming Challenges of Curved GRC
To address the limitations of wooden mold processes, Qinglong Group has built a complete solution system through material innovation and process upgrades. In terms of mold material selection, glass fiber reinforced plastic (GRP) molds, with their lightweight high-strength properties (tensile strength up to 180MPa) and high surface precision (Ra≤0.8μm), have become the preferred mold material for curved GRC, offering a service life of more than 200 uses—10 times more economical than wooden molds. For double-curved components requiring ultra-high precision, 3D printing mold technology can achieve 0.1mm-level forming accuracy. In a cultural landmark project in Nanjing, the Qinglong team successfully produced double-curved GRC curtain wall units with a minimum curvature radius of 300mm using SLS (selective laser sintering) technology.
The deep application of digital technology has restructured the production logic of curved GRC. Qinglong Group's independently developed BIM parametric design system can directly convert architects' Rhino models into mold machining data, and, in combination with five-axis machining centers, achieve precise mold manufacturing. In the Dongguan Women and Children's Activity Center project, this technology compressed the traditional 20-day wooden mold fabrication cycle to just 5 days while keeping component installation errors within ±2mm, winning the Silver Award of the AALBORG WHITE Cup GRC Construction Engineering Innovation Award.
Full-Chain Service Support for the Delivery of Curved GRC Projects
As a national high-tech enterprise, Qinglong Group has established full-chain service capabilities spanning from detailed design to after-sales maintenance. In the design phase, finite element analysis software is used to structurally optimize curved GRC components, ensuring that styling requirements are met while reducing material consumption by up to 15%; in the production phase, an automated material distribution system achieves uniform fiber distribution, keeping GRC flexural strength stable at above 20MPa; in the installation phase, three-dimensional laser scanning positioning technology is innovatively employed, together with customized metal connectors, to achieve seamless joining of complex curved surfaces.
From the double-curved curtain wall of a commercial complex in Guangzhou to the irregular suspended ceiling of an airport in Saudi Arabia, Qinglong Group has completed more than 600,000 square meters of complex curved GRC/GRG/GRP projects. These practices have not only verified the feasibility of modern mold technology, but are also driving the evolution of industry standards—as a contributing unit to the Technical Standard for Architectural Application of Glass Fiber Reinforced Cement (GRC), Qinglong is translating its curved component manufacturing experience into industry norms, leading the technological upgrading of new architectural decorative materials. Driven by the mission of "creating aesthetically beautiful architecture," Qinglong Group continues to explore the frontier where materials technology merges with architectural art, providing designers with broader creative space and shaping more architectural landmarks with the spirit of the times for our cities.
