How to Ensure Structural Stability of Large-Span GRC Shapes: Key Technologies and Engineering Practice

In contemporary architectural design, large-span GRC (glass fiber reinforced concrete) shapes have become the material of choice for high-end projects such as landmark buildings and commercial complexes, thanks to their unique artistic expressiveness and structural advantages. However, how to ensure structural stability while achieving ultimate aesthetics has always been a core concern in the industry. As an industry leader with 28 years of full-chain experience in UHPC/GRC/GRG/GRP materials, Qinglong Group has provided systematic solutions for the structural stability of large-span GRC through the deep integration of detailed design, material innovation, and engineering practice.

I. Material Properties and Structural Design: The Foundation of Large-Span GRC Stability

The stability of large-span GRC shapes depends first on the mechanical properties of the material itself. By combining glass fibers with a cement matrix, GRC achieves lightweight, high-strength properties—weighing only 1/4 of traditional stone, with flexural strength exceeding 20MPa—providing a fundamental guarantee for large-span structures. In material formula development, Qinglong Group optimized the glass fiber content (typically controlled at 4-5%) and gradation design, enabling GRC components to achieve a 40% improvement in crack resistance while reducing self-weight by 30%, effectively solving the self-weight load problem of large-span structures.

At the structural design level, the application of parametric modeling and BIM technology is key. Take, for example, a hyperbolic GRC curtain wall project for a grand theater: the Qinglong team used the Rhino+Grasshopper parametric platform to break down the architectural shape into 1,280 unit components, and used finite element analysis to simulate wind loads, thermal stress, and other load conditions, ensuring a clear force transmission path for each component. Meanwhile, an innovative "rib beam + open-web truss" composite support system kept the deflection of an 18-meter-span GRC canopy within L/250, far exceeding industry standards.

II. Production Process and Quality Control: Precise Implementation from Laboratory to Construction Site

The stability of large-span GRC is inseparable from refined production and manufacturing. Qinglong Group's production base in Nanning, Guangxi is equipped with fully automated spray-up molding equipment, with robotic arms precisely controlling the slurry mix ratio and fiber distribution to keep the standard deviation of component strength within 5%. To address the deformation issue of large-span components, a "pre-tensioning + steam curing" process is adopted, allowing components to complete 70% of their shrinkage before leaving the factory, with secondary shrinkage after on-site installation of less than 0.3mm/m.

The quality traceability system is equally important. Each GRC component is embedded with an RFID chip recording data such as material mix ratio, curing parameters, and mechanical properties, enabling full life-cycle quality control. This technology was applied in a convention and exhibition center project in Nanjing, helping the team quickly locate and resolve localized stress concentration issues during later maintenance, and ensuring the long-term stability of a 30,000㎡ large-span GRC roof.

III. Installation Technology and Engineering Practice: A Key Guarantee for On-Site Implementation

On-site installation is the last line of defense for the structural stability of large-span GRC. The Qinglong team innovatively developed "3D laser scanning + modular installation" technology, comparing scanned point cloud data with BIM models to achieve installation errors of ≤2mm. In a cantilevered GRC shape project for a commercial complex, a "temporary support + staged unloading" process was used to unload irregularly shaped components with a 35-meter span in 8 stages, ensuring uniform release of structural stress and ultimately achieving an overall verticality deviation of only 3mm.

In addition, the detail handling of joint design directly affects stability. Qinglong's combined "flexible connection + limit device" solution allows components to undergo ±5mm of displacement under temperature changes while limiting excessive deformation. This technology withstood temperature differences from -30℃ to 40℃ in a large-span GRC curtain wall project for an airport in northern China, with the structure running for 5 years without cracking or leakage.

As a National High-Tech Enterprise and a drafting unit of GRC industry standards, Qinglong Group has always taken "Creating Beautiful Architecture" as its mission, transforming 28 years of engineering experience into the driving force of technological innovation. From the irregularly shaped GRC curtain wall of the Dongguan Women and Children's Activity Center to the light-transmitting concrete project at Century Plaza on Nanjing East Road, Qinglong has proven through hundreds of successful cases that the structural stability of large-span GRC requires not only the coordination of materials, design, and construction, but also the support of full-chain service capabilities. In the future, with the composite application of UHPC and GRC, Qinglong will continue to explore more groundbreaking solutions, offering more possibilities for balancing architectural aesthetics and structural safety.
