In severe cold regions, freeze-thaw damage to building exterior walls has long been a technical challenge plaguing the industry. As the Qinglong Group with 28 years of full-chain experience in UHPC, GRC, GRG, and GRP materials, we deeply understand the technical breakthrough value of Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC) exterior walls under extreme climates. This article provides an in-depth analysis—from material properties and design strategies to engineering practice—of how UHPC exterior walls resist freeze-thaw erosion through science and technology, offering sustainable solutions for buildings in severe cold regions.
UHPC Materials: Core Freeze-Thaw Resistance Advantages in Severe Cold Environments
Compared with traditional concrete, UHPC has become the ideal choice for freeze-thaw resistance thanks to its unique material composition. Through optimized gradation design, it achieves a compactness of over 90%; combined with a steel fiber reinforcement system, porosity is kept below 3%, fundamentally reducing moisture penetration paths. The General Technical Conditions for Non-Load-Bearing Components of Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC), which Qinglong Group helped formulate, explicitly requires that UHPC exterior wall panels for severe cold regions meet the stringent standard of a strength loss rate ≤10% after 300 freeze-thaw cycles at -40℃. In actual testing, UHPC components produced by Qinglong can withstand 500 cycles without noticeable damage—a performance attributed to our self-developed nano-scale silica fume admixture and fiber dispersion technology.
Systematic Design Strategies for UHPC Exterior Walls in Severe Cold Regions
In engineering practice, the advantages of a single material must be amplified through systematic design. Qinglong's technical team innovatively proposed the “gradient frost resistance” design concept: the outer layer uses a 20mm-thick UHPC decorative layer embedded with basalt fiber mesh to enhance crack resistance; the middle layer incorporates a 30mm vacuum insulation panel to form a thermal barrier, keeping thermal conductivity below 0.018W/(m·K); and the inner layer features a breathable water-conducting membrane for directional discharge of condensate. This sandwich structure reduced the exterior wall heat transfer coefficient of a commercial complex project in Harbin to 0.35W/(m²·K), achieving 40% energy savings compared with traditional curtain walls, while the horizontal and vertical joint construction optimized through BIM technology brought waterproofing performance up to IPX7 level.
Full-Chain Quality Control Ensuring Engineering Durability
As a national “Specialized, Refined, Distinctive, and Innovative” enterprise, Qinglong has established a full-process quality control system covering everything from raw materials to installation. At its production base in Nanning, Guangxi, every batch of UHPC undergoes flash-freeze testing at -50℃ and electron microscopy porosity analysis; constant-temperature containers are used during transportation to keep material temperature stable; and on-site installation employs 3D laser scanning positioning with errors controlled within ±2mm. This rigorous approach has ensured that the UHPC exterior walls of a cultural center project in Shenyang show no salt efflorescence, cracks, or other freeze-thaw damage after three winters—a performance far exceeding the industry average.
From extreme cold testing in Mohe to landmark buildings in Changchun, Qinglong UHPC exterior walls have accumulated extensive engineering evidence in severe cold regions. We firmly believe that material innovation must be combined with systems thinking, and only through full-chain collaboration of detailed design, precision manufacturing, and scientific construction can the technical potential of UHPC in extreme environments be truly unleashed. Moving forward, Qinglong will continue to advance research on composite applications of UHPC with GRC, GRG, and other materials, providing more valuable solutions for architectural aesthetics and structural safety in cold regions around the world.
