In the field of building curtain walls, UHPC exterior wall panels, with their ultra-high strength, excellent durability, and rich expressive form capabilities, are becoming the preferred material for high-end building skins. However, the core prerequisite for installation quality lies in the treatment of the substrate wall — as an industry leader with 28 years of full-chain experience in UHPC/GRC/GRG/GRP, Qinglong Group knows well that the quality of the substrate wall directly determines the safety and service life of UHPC exterior wall panels. This article systematically analyzes the technical requirements that UHPC exterior wall panel installation places on substrate walls, and, drawing on Qinglong's engineering practice, explains the key quality control points.
1. Structural Load-Bearing Capacity of the Substrate Wall: The Safety Foundation for UHPC Installation
Although UHPC exterior wall panels feature lightweight, high-strength characteristics (weighing only 1/3 to 1/4 of traditional stone), they still require the substrate wall to provide stable load-bearing support. During the detailed design stage, Qinglong's technical team strictly verifies the load-bearing capacity of the substrate wall, focusing on the following indicators: concrete walls must meet strength grade C30 or above; masonry walls must use solid bricks or hollow concrete blocks; and wall flatness deviation must be controlled within ±3mm/2m. For existing building renovation projects, Qinglong conducts on-site load tests to ensure the substrate wall can withstand the combined effects of the UHPC panels' self-weight, wind loads, and seismic action, and where necessary applies reinforcement measures such as carbon fiber strengthening or the addition of steel structure keels.
2. Substrate Surface Treatment: A Key Process for Ensuring Connection Reliability
The cleanliness and interface treatment of the substrate wall directly affect the anchoring performance of UHPC panels. Qinglong's construction specifications require: before installation, floating dust, oil stains, release agents, and loose concrete layers must be thoroughly removed from the substrate surface, then flushed with a high-pressure water jet and air-dried naturally; for concrete substrates, a special bonding agent must be applied to enhance the grip with bonding materials; if the substrate has defects such as honeycombing or pitted surfaces, Qinglong's specially formulated repair mortar should be used for leveling to ensure surface flatness meets specification requirements. In addition, the moisture content of the substrate wall must be controlled below 8% to prevent panel cracking or debonding caused later by moisture evaporation.
3. Embedded Parts and Connection Joints: Building a Stable Force Transfer System
Serving as the "bridge" between UHPC exterior wall panels and the substrate wall, embedded parts must be installed with precise positioning and rust protection. Qinglong uses BIM technology for the detailed design of embedded parts, ensuring positional deviation does not exceed ±5mm; the spacing of embedded parts is determined by calculation based on panel dimensions and weight, generally not exceeding 1.2m. Connection joints must use stainless steel bolts or special connectors to form rigid connections with the embedded parts, while allowing for temperature deformation by reserving 10-15mm expansion joints filled with elastic sealing materials. In the Nanning ASEAN Cultural and Art Center project, Qinglong achieved stress-free connection between the UHPC curved curtain wall and the substrate wall through this process, withstanding the severe tests of the typhoon season.
4. Flatness and Verticality of the Substrate Wall: Prerequisites for Installation Accuracy
The precise installation of UHPC exterior wall panels places extremely high demands on the geometric dimensions of the substrate wall. Qinglong's construction team uses laser line projectors and straightedges for full-site surveying; wall verticality deviation must be ≤5mm over the full height, and planar axis deviation ≤3mm. For super high-rise projects, the effects of structural creep and settlement on the substrate wall must also be considered, with corresponding adjustment allowances reserved at the design stage. Through 3D scanning technology, Qinglong can capture and analyze substrate wall data in real time, providing precise parameters for the customized production of UHPC panels.
5. Integrated Waterproofing and Insulation: The Hidden Engineering Priority in Substrate Treatment
The waterproofing performance of the substrate wall directly affects the durability of the UHPC curtain wall system. Qinglong implements waterproofing measures in parallel with substrate treatment: applying a 2mm-thick polyurethane waterproof coating on concrete walls and laying waterproof breathable membranes on masonry walls to ensure rainwater cannot penetrate indoors. For projects with insulation requirements, Qinglong innovatively combines UHPC panels with insulation layers, connected to the substrate wall by mechanical fixing to form an integrated "insulation–waterproofing–decoration" system. In a commercial complex project in Nanjing, this process improved the building's energy efficiency indicators by more than 15%.
As a National High-Tech Enterprise and a participant in setting UHPC industry standards, Qinglong Group has always regarded substrate wall treatment as the "lifeline" of UHPC exterior wall panel installation. From structural verification at the detailed design stage, to precision control during construction, to later quality traceability, Qinglong leverages its full-chain service capabilities to build a solid and reliable substrate foundation for every project. Moving forward, Qinglong will continue its mission of "creating beautiful architecture," pushing the application boundaries of UHPC materials in architectural decoration through technological innovation, and providing designers and owners with solutions that combine safety and artistry.
