The "Inner Strength" of Curtain Walls: Understanding Density Standards for High-Performance GRC Curtain Walls and the Way of Quality Control

Under the dual considerations of contemporary architectural aesthetics and engineering safety, GRC (Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete) curtain walls have become the preferred decorative material for landmark buildings and high-end commercial complexes thanks to their advantages of light weight, high strength, and flexible styling. However, the durability and safety of curtain walls largely depend on their density—a key indicator referred to by industry experts as the "hidden lifeline." As Qinglong Group with 28 years of full-chain experience in UHPC/GRC/GRG/GRP, we will comprehensively analyze the core density technology of high-performance GRC curtain walls, from standard definitions and influencing factors to quality control.

I. Industry Standards and Technical Positioning of GRC Curtain Wall Density

Density is the core parameter measuring the compactness of the internal structure of GRC materials, directly affecting their impermeability, frost resistance, and mechanical properties. According to the Technical Standard for Building Application of Glass Fiber Reinforced Cement (GRC) (JGJ/T423-2018), the density of high-performance GRC curtain walls must meet the following requirements: apparent density ≥1.8g/cm³, water absorption ≤8%, and no cracks after 200 freeze-thaw cycle tests. As a participating developer of this standard, Qinglong Group additionally implements a "three-inspection system" in production—raw material inspection, density monitoring during the molding process, and factory water-tightness testing—to ensure a product compliance rate exceeding 99%.

II. Five Key Factors Affecting the Density of GRC Curtain Walls

1. Scientific Balance of Material Proportions: The ratio of cement, glass fiber, and quartz sand is fundamental. Qinglong uses custom-grade 42.5R Portland cement, combined with alkali-resistant glass fiber (content ≥5%) and graded quartz sand, and optimizes the ideal water-cement ratio (0.35-0.40) through orthogonal testing to ensure slurry fluidity and compactness after hardening.

2. Precise Control of Molding Processes: Spray molding and premix casting processes significantly affect density. Qinglong has introduced spray equipment imported from Germany to achieve uniform coating of fibers and mortar; for complex-shaped components, vacuum vibration technology is adopted to keep air bubble content below 3%, 50% lower than the industry average.

3. Temperature and Humidity Coordination in Curing Regimes: Early curing determines structural compactness. Qinglong's original "stepped curing method": after 24 hours of curing at constant temperature (20±2℃) and constant humidity (≥90%), components are transferred to 7 days of steam curing, allowing the hydration reaction to proceed fully and increasing density by 20% compared to natural curing.

4. Mold Precision and Release Agent Selection: The combination of high-precision steel molds (tolerance ≤0.5mm) and water-based release agents can reduce surface air holes. Qinglong's self-developed nano-scale release agent forms a uniform protective film on the component surface, reducing density loss caused by demolding defects.

5. Fiber Dispersion and Interface Bonding: Fiber agglomeration is an invisible killer of density. Qinglong adopts a three-stage dispersion process (mechanical dispersion + air-flow dispersion + ultrasonic dispersion) to ensure a fiber monofilament rate >95%, forming a perfect interfacial transition zone with the cement matrix.

III. The Chain Effects of Density on GRC Curtain Wall Performance

Low density not only makes GRC curtain walls prone to leakage and freeze-thaw damage, but also leads to degraded mechanical properties. A landmark project case shows that GRC curtain walls with compliant density (1.9g/cm³) can achieve a flexural strength of 22MPa, 40% higher than similar non-compliant products (1.6g/cm³), with service life extended to over 50 years. In the Century Plaza renovation project on Nanjing East Road, in which Qinglong participated, strict density control enabled the translucent concrete GRC curtain wall to achieve a triple breakthrough of "structure—light transmission—durability," winning the Silver Award of the AALBORG WHITE Cup UHPC Construction Engineering Innovation Award.

IV. Qinglong Group's Density Quality Control System

As a national high-tech enterprise and a GRC industry standard-setter, Qinglong has established a full-process quality traceability system: from X-ray fluorescence analysis of incoming raw materials, to online density monitoring during production (sampling every hour), to ultrasonic flaw detection before leaving the factory. Its Guangxi production base is equipped with intelligent production lines with an annual capacity of 600,000 square meters, using BIM technology to achieve digital pre-control of component density, ensuring that every GRC curtain wall panel meets "millimeter-level" precision requirements.

Density is the "inner gene" of GRC curtain walls and, even more, the "invisible barrier" of building safety. With 28 years of professional accumulation, Qinglong Group deeply integrates materials science with engineering practice, providing designers and owners with full-chain solutions from detailed design to after-sales maintenance. While pursuing architectural aesthetics, we uphold the quality commitment of "meticulousness and the pursuit of excellence," making every GRC curtain wall an architectural artwork that stands the test of time.
