Analysis and Discussion of the Main Factors Affecting GRC Strength Degradation

In the field of architectural decorative materials, GRC (Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete) is widely used in high-end projects such as grand theaters, commercial complexes, and landmark buildings thanks to its lightweight, high strength, and flexible formability. However, the degradation of material strength directly affects building safety and durability. Drawing on 28 years of industry experience, Qinglong Group will, in this article, provide an in-depth analysis of the core factors affecting GRC strength degradation from three dimensions—material fundamentals, process control, and environmental impact—and offer solutions based on full-chain technical expertise.

I. The Underlying Impact of Material Components on GRC Strength Degradation

The strength foundation of GRC stems from the synergy between the cement matrix and glass fibers, and the compatibility of the two directly determines the material's long-term performance. Insufficient hydration of the cement matrix or an unbalanced mix ratio increases structural porosity, making the glass fibers susceptible to erosion. In production, Qinglong uses a customized cement system, optimizing the combined content of silica fume and mineral powder to raise matrix density by more than 30%, effectively suppressing strength degradation. The alkali resistance of glass fibers is another key factor: high-quality alkali-free glass fibers are far more stable in alkaline environments than ordinary medium-alkali fibers. Qinglong uses imported alkali-resistant glass fibers, and after 2,000 hours of alkali resistance testing, the strength retention rate still exceeds 85%, whereas inferior fibers can degrade by up to 40% under the same conditions.

II. The Critical Role of Production Processes in GRC Strength Stability

Process control in production is an important barrier against strength degradation. Insufficient mixing uniformity leads to uneven fiber dispersion and localized stress concentration points, while insufficient molding pressure leaves microcracks inside components, becoming hidden risks of later degradation. Qinglong has introduced vacuum high-pressure extrusion equipment imported from Germany, combined with three-dimensional material placement technology, ensuring fiber orientation distribution accuracy with an error of ≤2% and a molding density 25% higher than that of traditional processes. The curing regime also affects strength development: by combining steam curing with natural curing, the cement hydration degree is raised to over 95%, avoiding early strength regression. Compared with industry data, the 5-year strength degradation rate of GRC components produced under standardized processes can be controlled within 5%, while products with process defects may degrade by more than 20%.

III. External Challenges of the Service Environment to GRC Strength Degradation

Temperature and humidity variations, chemical attack, and mechanical loads in the natural environment are the main external factors causing GRC strength degradation. In cold regions, freeze-thaw cycles cause internal moisture to freeze and expand, generating microcracks under repeated action, while in coastal areas, chloride ion penetration accelerates the deterioration of glass fibers. By incorporating nano-scale anti-cracking agents and anti-rust components into the material, Qinglong has increased the product's freeze-thaw cycle resistance to more than 300 cycles and reduced the chloride ion penetration coefficient by 40%. For special environment projects, such as a seaside building in Penang, Malaysia, Qinglong adopted a customized surface protection system; after 8 years of tracking and monitoring, the strength retention rate remains above 90% of the design value, significantly outperforming the industry average.

As a national high-tech enterprise and a participant in formulating GRC industry standards, Qinglong Group has always upheld an attitude of “meticulousness and the constant pursuit of excellence,” controlling GRC strength degradation across the full chain from material R&D and process optimization to engineering application. Through 28 years of technical accumulation, it has established a quality assurance system covering the full range of UHPC, GRC, GRG, and GRP products, and has provided reliable material solutions for thousands of projects at home and abroad. Looking ahead, Qinglong will continue to focus on the innovative development of new architectural decorative materials, using its technical strength to safeguard building safety and aesthetic realization.
