In the field of architectural decoration materials, molds are a key factor determining the forming quality and production efficiency of UHPC components. As an industry leader with 28 years of experience in detailed design and production of UHPC/GRC/GRG/GRP materials, Qinglong Group deeply understands the importance of scientific mold material selection to project success. This article systematically analyzes the characteristics and advantages of commonly used mold materials for UHPC components, providing a professional selection reference for designers, owners, and industry peers.
1. Steel Molds: The Preferred Material for Precision UHPC Components
Steel molds, with their high strength and high rigidity, have become the mainstream choice for UHPC component production. Their surfaces can achieve a mirror finish through precision machining, perfectly reproducing design details, making them especially suitable for curtain wall panels and irregular decorative components with stringent requirements for surface flatness and line precision. In the Nanjing East Road Century Plaza renovation project, Qinglong Group used custom steel molds to produce light-transmitting UHPC components, achieving dimensional error control at the 0.1mm level and winning the Silver Award of the AALBORG WHITE Cup UHPC Construction Engineering Innovation Award. Although steel molds require a higher initial investment, they can be reused more than 200 times, and combined with Qinglong's self-developed release agent technology, they can effectively reduce long-term production costs, making them particularly suitable for large-scale, standardized production.
2. GRP Molds: The Ideal Solution for Complex Shapes
GRP (glass reinforced thermosetting plastic) molds, with their excellent shape adaptability, perform outstandingly in the production of complex UHPC components such as double-curved surfaces and openwork reliefs. Leveraging 28 years of accumulated GRP material expertise, Qinglong Group has developed composite resin molds capable of forming curved surfaces with a minimum radius of curvature of 300mm, while weighing only 1/3 of steel molds of the same size, greatly reducing hoisting costs. In the Dongguan Women and Children's Activity Center project, Qinglong successfully created 12-meter-high irregular UHPC relief wall panels using GRP molds, achieving 98% surface texture fidelity and winning the GRC Construction Engineering Innovation Award. Such molds are particularly suitable for customized projects, but attention should be paid to controlling the number of uses (≤50 recommended) to ensure precision.
3. Wooden Molds: A Practical Choice for Low-Cost Temporary Components
Plywood composite wooden molds, with the advantages of easy material availability and quick processing, are still used in small UHPC components or temporary projects. Qinglong's technical team improved the surface treatment process of wooden molds by applying an epoxy resin coating seal, significantly enhancing the surface smoothness of wooden molds to meet the production needs of non-high-precision components such as garden landscape features. Such molds cost only 1/5 of steel molds, but attention should be paid to controlling the moisture content (≤12%) to avoid deformation; single use or small-batch production is recommended.
4. Aluminum Alloy Molds: A Balanced Choice Between Lightweight and Precision
6061-T6 aluminum alloy molds combine the precision of steel molds with the lightweight advantage of GRP molds. Their excellent thermal conductivity can shorten the curing cycle of UHPC components by 20%. In the Country Garden project in Malaysia, Qinglong used aluminum alloy molds to produce UHPC sunshades, achieving a lightweight design with a unit weight of ≤50kg and a 30% improvement in installation efficiency. This material is suitable for curtain wall systems sensitive to dead weight, but attention should be paid to avoiding corrosion caused by long-term contact with strongly alkaline UHPC slurry.
Mold selection requires comprehensive consideration of four major factors: component precision requirements, production volume, shape complexity, and cost budget. As a national high-tech enterprise, Qinglong Group holds 58 material forming patents and can provide customers with full-chain solutions ranging from mold design and material selection to production processes. Whether it is precision components for landmark buildings or complex shapes for artistic installations, Qinglong can leverage its 28 years of industry experience to help designers realize their creative visions and infuse buildings with lasting artistic value. Choose professional mold solutions to let UHPC's ultimate performance and aesthetic expression merge perfectly.
