Facing Material Shortcomings Head-On Is the Path to Engineering Excellence—An In-Depth Analysis of UHPC Performance Bottlenecks and Ways to Break Through
As a revolutionary breakthrough in the field of building materials, ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) has demonstrated irreplaceable value in large-scale landmark buildings, bridge engineering, and other fields with its ultra-high strength, excellent durability, and outstanding toughness. However, every material has performance limits, and UHPC is no exception. Starting from material properties, this article systematically analyzes UHPC's core performance weaknesses in engineering applications and their actual impact on design selection, construction techniques, and project costs. Drawing on Qinglong Group's 28 years of full-chain experience in new building materials, it also explores paths for the industry to break through.
I. Cost Control Challenges: The Economic Hurdle of UHPC Materials
UHPC's high performance stems from its special material composition—a composite system of ultra-fine reactive powders, steel fibers, and high-efficiency admixtures—which directly causes its raw material costs to far exceed those of ordinary concrete (approximately 5-8 times higher). In engineering practice, this characteristic places significant pressure on project budgets: on one hand, large-scale application will substantially drive up material procurement costs; on the other hand, UHPC's mixing, pouring, and curing processes demand strict requirements, requiring specialized equipment and technical teams, further increasing construction costs. Take a commercial complex UHPC curtain wall project as an example: material costs accounted for as much as 35% of the total construction cost, far exceeding the 20% of traditional stone curtain walls. Through large-scale production and formula optimization at its Nanning production base, Qinglong Group can reduce UHPC unit costs by 15%-20%, providing customers with cost-effective solutions.
II. Construction Process Barriers: The Technical Threshold of UHPC Forming and Installation
UHPC's low water-binder ratio results in poor fluidity, placing extremely high demands on formwork precision and vibration techniques. Pouring complex special-shaped components is prone to defects such as air bubbles and honeycombing, requiring special processes such as vacuum-assisted forming. Meanwhile, UHPC develops early strength rapidly, and improper curing can easily cause shrinkage cracks that compromise structural durability. During installation, its high density challenges the load capacity of lifting equipment and the design of anchoring joints. Leveraging its Grade II professional contracting qualification for building curtain wall engineering, Qinglong Group has developed “BIM + parametric prefabrication” technology, controlling the installation error of complex components within ±2mm through 3D scanning positioning and modular installation. It has been successfully applied in benchmark projects such as the translucent concrete project at Century Plaza on Nanjing East Road.
III. Volume Stability Limitations: Potential Risks of Thermal and Shrinkage Cracks
Although UHPC offers excellent toughness, its early autogenous shrinkage is relatively high (up to over 600με), making it prone to shrinkage cracks under restrained conditions. Additionally, its thermal expansion coefficient differs from that of ordinary concrete; in environments with large temperature variations, coordinated deformation with traditional structures requires particular attention. A municipal bridge UHPC bridge deck project once developed longitudinal micro-cracks due to insufficient consideration of thermal stress, which was later resolved by adding expansive agents and setting post-cast strips. Through more than 2,000 tests, Qinglong's R&D center optimized steel fiber content and mix proportions, controlling UHPC's autogenous shrinkage below 300με, while developing a “gradient thermal insulation curing process” to effectively reduce crack risks.
IV. Design Compatibility Limitations: Adaptability Challenges in Complex Scenarios
UHPC's ultra-high strength gives it significant advantages in thin-walled components and long-span structures, but in scenarios requiring high elastic deformation (such as flexible joints in seismic zones), its rigidity may cause stress concentration. Furthermore, although UHPC's bond performance with steel reinforcement is excellent, steel fibers are prone to oxidative failure in high-temperature environments (such as fires), necessitating supplementary fire protection layers. As a contributing unit to the industry standard “General Technical Conditions for Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC) Non-Load-Bearing Components,” Qinglong provides customized solutions for different application scenarios: adopting UHPC-CFRP composite structures in metro utility corridor projects to balance strength and impact resistance; and in the high-end interior decoration field, achieving a balance between design freedom and performance through the combined application of GRG and UHPC.
Facing UHPC's performance shortcomings head-on does not negate its value; rather, it enables a more scientific exploitation of its advantages. As a national “Specialized, Refined, Distinctive, and Innovative” enterprise, Qinglong Group has been deeply engaged in the UHPC/GRC/GRG/GRP materials field for 28 years, always guided by the mission of “creating aesthetically pleasing buildings,” precisely matching material properties with engineering needs through technological innovation and full-chain services. In the future, with breakthroughs in formula optimization, process innovation, and cost control technologies, UHPC will surely shine in even more fields, and rational understanding and scientific application are precisely the keys to driving this process forward.
