In the field of architectural decoration, GRC components, with their lightweight, high-strength nature and rich variety of shapes, have become the ideal choice for landmark buildings and high-end projects. However, how can the quality stability of these components be ensured from production to installation? Non-destructive testing technology provides a scientific solution for whole-life-cycle quality control of GRC components. As an industry leader with 28 years of deep expertise in UHPC/GRC/GRG/GRP materials, Qinglong Group will draw on its full-chain practical experience to provide an in-depth analysis of the core methods and application logic of non-destructive testing for GRC components.
Non-Destructive Testing of GRC Components: An Invisible Line of Defense for Structural Safety
The quality of GRC components directly affects the integrity of a building's appearance and its structural safety. Traditional destructive testing can obtain data, but it damages component integrity and can hardly meet the needs of batch quality inspection. Using physical means such as ultrasonic waves, the rebound method, and electromagnetic induction, non-destructive testing technology achieves quality assessment without damaging components, and has become a core element of modern GRC production quality control systems. Qinglong Group has established a complete non-destructive testing laboratory at its production base in Nanning, Guangxi, applying this technology throughout the entire process from detailed design and manufacturing to construction acceptance.
Four Core Testing Methods: A Comprehensive Scan from Internal Defects to Mechanical Performance
Ultrasonic flaw detection technology, serving as the “X-ray eye” for detecting internal defects in GRC components, emits high-frequency sound waves that penetrate the component and determines from the echo signals whether there are voids, cracks, or uneven fiber distribution inside. In the translucent concrete project at Century Plaza on Nanjing East Road, Qinglong adopted ultrasonic CT imaging technology to achieve precise analysis of the internal fiber orientation of 30mm ultra-thin GRC components, ensuring a balance between light transmission and structural strength. This technology is especially suitable for scenarios with stringent requirements on the mechanical performance of components, such as grand theaters and museums.
Rebound method testing indirectly assesses the surface strength of components by measuring the rebound speed when a rebound hammer strikes the GRC surface. Based on 28 years of engineering data, Qinglong's R&D team established a rebound value-to-compressive strength conversion model for GRC with different mix ratios, improving on-site testing efficiency by 40%. In the Dongguan Women and Children's Activity Center project, this method, combined with core drilling sampling (destructive testing), enabled rapid quality screening of 12,000 square meters of GRC exterior wall panels.
Electromagnetic induction testing uses the eddy current effect to detect the distribution density and corrosion condition of steel bars or steel mesh inside GRC. In the Technical Standard for Architectural Application of Glass Fiber Reinforced Cement (GRC) (JGJ/T423-2018), which Qinglong participated in formulating, this technology is explicitly listed as a mandatory inspection item for metal embedded parts. In a commercial complex project in Saudi Arabia, electromagnetic induction testing identified three spacing deviations of anchoring steel bars in advance, avoiding potential installation hazards at later stages.
Infrared thermal imaging technology, meanwhile, captures the temperature field distribution on the surface of GRC components to identify internal defects such as voids and delamination. In the inspection of special-shaped GRC curtain walls for a landmark building in Vietnam, Qinglong used drones equipped with infrared thermal cameras to achieve full-coverage detection of double-curved GRC components at heights exceeding 100 meters, discovering two internal voids caused by improper curing, which were repaired in a timely manner.
Full-Chain Application: A Closed Quality Loop from Laboratory to Construction Site
The application of non-destructive testing technology across the life cycle of GRC components shows a “three-stage control” pattern: during the production stage, Qinglong uses a combination of ultrasonic and rebound method testing to screen every batch of components with 100% coverage for surface strength and internal defects; before leaving the factory, electromagnetic induction testing verifies the anchoring quality of steel bars to ensure compliance with the industry standard General Technical Conditions for Non-Load-Bearing Components of Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC); during the construction stage, infrared thermal imaging and 3D scanning technologies are combined to conduct an overall quality assessment of installed components. This whole-process testing system has kept the first-pass acceptance rate of GRC components at real estate projects undertaken by Qinglong, such as Xinghewan and Poly, above 99.6%.
As a national specialized, refined, distinctive, and innovative enterprise and a participant in formulating GRC industry standards, Qinglong Group has always regarded non-destructive testing technology as a key lever for improving product quality. From material performance simulation in the detailed design stage, to intelligent quality inspection in production, and then to condition monitoring in after-sales maintenance, non-destructive testing technology is becoming the “lifeline” of GRC component quality assurance. In the future, with the integration of AI visual recognition and IoT technologies, Qinglong will further build a whole-life-cycle digital twin testing system for GRC components, contributing technical strength to the high-quality development of the architectural decoration industry.
