How to Ensure Wind Load Resistance of Super-Tall Double-Curved GRC Panels — Key Technologies and Engineering Practice

Under the dual challenges of modern architectural aesthetics and engineering safety, super high-rise double-curved GRC panels have become the preferred material for landmark building envelope design thanks to their lightweight, high-strength and flexible shaping properties. However, when facing the test of strong wind loads, how can their structural stability and durability be ensured? As an industry leader with 28 years of deep expertise in UHPC/GRC/GRG/GRP materials, Qinglong Group leverages its full-chain technical strength to build wind-load resistance solutions spanning from material R&D to engineering implementation, safeguarding the "art in the sky" of super high-rise buildings.

Material Genes: The Underlying Logic of Double-Curved GRC Wind-Load Resistance

The wind-load resistance of glass fibre reinforced concrete (GRC) stems from its unique material composite system. By optimizing the glass fibre content (typically controlled at 4-5%) and the cement matrix mix ratio, Qinglong has raised the flexural strength of GRC panels to over 20MPa, with an elastic modulus of 15-20GPa, enabling slight deformation without cracking under strong wind loads. To address stress concentration in super high-rise double-curved shapes, a hybrid reinforcement technology combining basalt fibre and ordinary glass fibre further enhances the material's impact toughness and fatigue performance. According to third-party testing, its dynamic wind load simulation test can withstand a wind pressure of 1.5kPa, far exceeding conventional building requirements.

Structural Deepening: Parametric Design Solves Double-Curved Load-Bearing Challenges

The complexity of double-curved forms places extremely high demands on structural calculation. Relying on BIM technology and a parametric design platform, Qinglong established a coupled "wind pressure-form-stress" analysis model, using the Grasshopper plugin to achieve curved surface subdivision and load simulation. Taking a 300-meter super high-rise project as an example, after topological optimization of its double-curved GRC envelope, the traditional flat-panel anchorage was replaced with multi-point distributed connections, allowing a single connection node to bear 3.5kN of tension. Meanwhile, finite element analysis was used to optimize the panel thickness distribution, locally thickening to 25mm where the radius of curvature is smallest (≤300mm), meeting wind resistance requirements while controlling self-weight (only 1/4 that of natural stone).

Engineering Practice: Full-Chain Quality Control Builds a Wind-Resistance Safety Barrier

Full-process control from production to installation is key to ensuring wind-load resistance performance. At its production base in Nanning, Guangxi, Qinglong adopts an automated spray-up forming process to ensure uniform fibre dispersion, and introduces 3D laser scanning technology to keep component precision within ±2mm. During on-site installation, an innovative "3D positioning + modular hoisting" process is adopted, with embedded RFID chips enabling traceability throughout construction. In a cultural centre project in a coastal city, the double-curved GRC curtain wall withstood the typhoon season with a measured maximum displacement of only 8mm, far below the design limit, confirming the reliability of Qinglong's GRC wind-load resistance technology.

Industry Leadership: Dual Drive of Standard Setting and Technological Innovation

As a contributing unit to the Technical Standard for Application of Glass Fibre Reinforced Cement (GRC) in Building (JGJ/T423-2018), Qinglong has been deeply involved in formulating wind-load design specifications, and its proposed "dynamic correction method for wind vibration coefficient" has been incorporated into industry guidelines. Meanwhile, through its provincial engineering technology centre R&D platform, Qinglong continues to develop ultra-high-performance GRC formulations, and its newly developed UHPC-GRC composite panels raise flexural strength to 35MPa, offering a better solution for super high-rise buildings.

From material innovation to engineering practice, Qinglong has built a wind-load resistance technology system for super high-rise double-curved GRC panels through 28 years of technical accumulation. Going forward, with the deep integration of BIM technology and intelligent manufacturing, Qinglong will continue to uphold its mission of "creating aesthetically beautiful architecture", providing more imaginative solutions for the artistic expression and safety performance of building envelopes, so that every double-curved GRC panel becomes a "dancer in the sky" that can withstand the test of nature.
