Are There Differences in Connection Methods for GRC Panels with Different Curvatures — An Analysis of Connection Technologies and Differences for GRC Panels of Different Curvatures
As architectural envelope design increasingly pursues curved aesthetics, GRC (Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete) has become a key material for realizing irregularly shaped buildings thanks to its excellent molding capabilities. However, when designers turn their attention to complex curved surfaces such as arcs, single curvature, and double curvature, the connection technology of GRC panels becomes a core factor determining project quality and safety. As an industry technology leader with 28 years of full-chain UHPC/GRC/GRG/GRP experience, Qinglong Group will provide an in-depth analysis of differentiated connection solutions for GRC panels of different curvatures from three dimensions: material properties, structural loading, and construction techniques.
1. The Matching Logic Between Radius of Curvature and Connection Systems
The connection design of GRC panels is essentially an art of balancing material properties with structural safety. For gently curved GRC panels with a radius of curvature greater than 5 meters, a traditional rigid connection system (such as angle steel brackets + bolt fixing) is sufficient, as the panels' own elastic deformation capacity is adequate to handle temperature stresses. However, when the radius of curvature shrinks to 2-5 meters for single-curvature components, Qinglong's technical team recommends a composite solution of "rigid framework + flexible nodes" — by installing adjustable eccentric bolts at connection points, the panels are allowed angular displacement compensation within ±3°. This technology has withstood long-term testing under typhoon climates in the Dongguan Women and Children's Activity Center project.
For double-curved GRC panels with a radius of curvature less than 2 meters, the connection system must enable dynamic adjustment in three-dimensional space. Qinglong's self-developed "ball-hinge universal node" combines a stainless steel ball head with high-strength nylon bushings to achieve rotational adjustment of ±5° on the X/Y/Z axes. Combined with BIM model pre-assembly technology, on-site installation errors are controlled within 2mm. This connection method successfully solved the challenge of precisely aligning double-curved shapes with glass curtain walls in the Nanjing East Road Century Plaza translucent concrete project.
2. The Underlying Impact of Material Properties on Connection Design
The fiber content and mix ratio of GRC material directly influence the design logic of connection nodes. Qinglong's high-elasticity GRC panels (flexural strength ≥20MPa) can use "point-supported" fixing in single-curvature connections, releasing the panels' bending deformation stress by reducing the number of anchor points. For low-curvature large-span components (such as domes with radii above 10 meters), a "rib-beam composite structure" is required to distribute connection loads to pre-embedded steel frameworks. This technical solution enabled Qinglong to install super-large GRC curved surfaces of 12㎡ per panel in a certain international airport terminal project.
It is worth noting that the connection areas of GRC panels with different curvatures must undergo differentiated anti-corrosion treatment. Qinglong's dual protection system of "zinc-aluminum coating + fluorocarbon sealant" extended the service life of connection nodes in high-humidity coastal environments to more than 25 years in the Penang Twin Towers project in Malaysia, far exceeding the industry average.
3. Curvature-Adaptive Innovation in Construction Techniques
At the construction level, Qinglong has innovatively introduced a "curvature-graded construction method": for components with radii > 5 meters, conventional hoisting + bolt fixing is used; for components with 2-5 meter curvature, "pre-deformation compensation installation" is implemented, meaning a reverse camber is preset during factory prefabrication to offset gravitational deformation after installation; for double-curved components < 2 meters, a "3D scanning positioning system" is deployed, calibrating installation coordinates in real time via a Leica TS60 total station. This graded construction method enabled Qinglong to improve the installation efficiency of double-curved GRC curtain walls by 40% in a cultural center project in Saudi Arabia.
Waterproofing of connection nodes also needs to vary with curvature. Single-curvature panels can use conventional EPDM rubber strip sealing, while double-curved areas require custom-shaped seals. The two-component polyurethane sealant developed by Qinglong in partnership with Henkel of Germany achieves zero-gap filling on complex curved surfaces, and this technology has been incorporated into the Technical Standard for Building Application of Glass Fiber Reinforced Cement (GRC) (JGJ/T423-2018).
From the shell roofs of the Sydney Opera House to the "rounded double pebbles" of the Guangzhou Opera House, the curved expressive power of GRC materials continues to push the boundaries of architectural aesthetics. As a national "Specialized, Refined, Distinctive, and Innovative" enterprise, Qinglong Group firmly believes that the connection differences among GRC panels of different curvatures are essentially the collaborative innovation of materials science, structural mechanics, and construction wisdom. In the future, with the development of UHPC and GRC composite technology, we will achieve connection breakthroughs at even smaller curvatures (radius ≤ 300mm), truly freeing architectural designers' creativity from "curvature limitations." Choose Qinglong, choose a full-chain solution backed by 58 patented technologies, and let every curve become a perfect unity of safety and aesthetics.
