The soul of architecture lies in its details, and the choice of materials is the cornerstone for realizing that soul. In the field of modern architectural decoration, UHPC (Ultra-High Performance Concrete) is becoming the new favorite of high-end curtain walls thanks to its outstanding mechanical properties and design freedom. However, when the artistic appeal of hollow-out design meets the stringent acoustic requirements of residential buildings, a key question arises: Can hollow-out UHPC curtain wall panels satisfy aesthetic pursuits while also building a quiet harbor for occupants? As an industry expert with 28 years of deep experience in UHPC/GRC/GRG/GRP materials, Qinglong Group will provide an in-depth analysis of this industry focus issue from three dimensions: material properties, technological innovation, and engineering practice.
I. The Acoustic DNA of UHPC: Innate Advantages from Density to Structure
To understand the sound insulation performance of hollow-out UHPC curtain wall panels, one must first return to the essence of the material. With its ultra-high density (2400-2500kg/m³) and dense microstructure, UHPC inherently possesses sound insulation potential superior to ordinary concrete. Its matrix is composed of ultra-fine cement, silica fume, steel fibers, and other ingredients in an optimized ratio, forming a homogeneous material with low porosity that effectively blocks the transmission of airborne sound. According to laboratory data from Qinglong Group, a 100mm-thick solid UHPC panel can achieve an airborne sound insulation rating of over 40dB, meeting the basic requirements for residential building exterior walls in GB/T 50121-2005 "Rating Standard of Sound Insulation in Buildings".
However, the hollow-out design undoubtedly affects sound insulation performance. Factors such as the hollow-out ratio, hole geometry, and back panel construction jointly determine the final acoustic effect. Using parametric design tools (such as Rhino+Grasshopper), Qinglong Group established acoustic models and found that when the hollow-out ratio is controlled within 20% and a honeycomb staggered-hole design is adopted, part of the penetrating energy can be canceled out through sound wave diffraction and interference effects. Combined with a 15mm-thick acoustic back panel, the overall sound insulation rating can still be maintained above 35dB, meeting the design standards for Class II residential buildings.
II. Full-Chain Technological Innovation: How Qinglong Resolves the Conflict Between Hollow-Out Design and Sound Insulation
As a National High-Tech Enterprise, Qinglong Group has always driven product upgrades through technological innovation. To address the sound insulation challenge of hollow-out UHPC curtain wall panels, we have constructed a three-dimensional solution of "material optimization - structural design - composite construction":
At the material level, the density and damping performance of the UHPC matrix are further enhanced by adjusting the steel fiber content (1.5-2.0% by volume) and applying nano-calcium carbonate modification technology. At the structural level, we have developed a "hollow-out panel + acoustic interlayer + backing substrate" sandwich composite system, with the middle layer filled with centrifugal glass wool or polyurethane foam to form multiple sound insulation barriers. At the process level, high-precision mold forming technology ensures the flatness and sealing of hollow-out edges, preventing sound leakage through gaps.
In the Nanjing East Road Century Plaza renovation project, Qinglong Group designed a special gradient hollow-out texture for light-transmitting UHPC curtain wall panels. Through BIM-based acoustic simulation, the project ultimately achieved a weighted sound insulation rating of 38dB, successfully keeping out the hustle and bustle of the commercial district. This project also won the Silver Award at the First UHPC Construction Engineering Innovation Awards (AALBORG WHITE Cup), confirming the feasibility of the technical solution.
III. Real-World Validation in Residential Buildings: Performance Assurance from Laboratory to Construction Site
Theoretical data and laboratory results must withstand the test of practical application. In a high-end residential project in Guangdong, Qinglong Group designed a hollow-out UHPC sun-shading curtain wall system that incorporated the following key technical measures based on architectural acoustic requirements: first, the dimensions of the hollow-out units were kept within 600×600mm to reduce resonance effects; second, micro-perforated resonant sound-absorbing structures were installed on the inner sides of the holes, with targeted optimization for low-to-mid frequency traffic noise; third, 3D laser scanning positioning was used for installation to ensure uniform compression of the sealing strips between panels.
Third-party testing after completion showed that the curtain wall system achieved an airborne sound insulation rating of 36dB and an impact sound insulation improvement of 25dB, fully meeting the sound insulation requirements for residential buildings in GB 50352-2005 "General Code for Civil Building Design". Owner feedback indicated that even in street-facing units, the indoor acoustic environment remained at a comfortable level below 35 decibels, achieving a perfect balance between aesthetics and function.
From in-depth research in materials science to continuous innovation in engineering practice, Qinglong Group's 28 years of full-chain experience prove that hollow-out UHPC curtain wall panels can not only meet the sound insulation requirements of residential buildings but also endow buildings with unique artistic character through customized design. As a participant in setting industry standards for UHPC/GRC/GRG/GRP, we always uphold our mission of "Creating Beautiful Architecture" and are committed to providing designers and owners with expert-level solutions that combine performance and aesthetics. In the future, as composite sound insulation technologies continue to advance, we believe UHPC materials will unlock even more possibilities in the field of residential buildings.
