Joint treatment is the core guarantee of safety and aesthetics for UHPC curtain wall panel systems. Selecting an appropriate sealant not only concerns the building's waterproofing performance, but also directly affects the curtain wall's durability and overall design expressiveness. As an industry technical expert with 28 years of full-chain experience in UHPC/GRC/GRG/GRP materials, Qinglong Group draws on more than 1,000 engineering projects to provide an in-depth analysis of the selection logic and application key points of sealants.
I. Core Types and Technical Characteristics of UHPC Curtain Wall Panel Sealants
UHPC (Ultra-High Performance Concrete) curtain wall panels, with their ultra-high strength and low permeability, place special demands on sealants. Current mainstream options fall into three categories: silicone structural sealants (for load-bearing joints), silicone weatherproofing sealants (for dynamic movement joints), and modified silane sealants (balancing adhesion and environmental friendliness). Among them, silicone sealants, with a temperature resistance range of -50°C to 150°C, elongation of ≥200%, and excellent UV resistance, have become the first choice for super high-rise and coastal projects; modified silane sealants offer greater advantages in environmental rating and substrate compatibility, making them suitable for green buildings with strict VOC emission controls.
II. Five Core Principles for Sealant Selection
1. Principle of Movement Compatibility: Based on the displacement caused by thermal expansion and contraction of curtain wall panels (usually ≤±50mm), select a sealant with the corresponding movement capability class (e.g., Class 25 or Class 50). In a landmark project in Nanjing, Qinglong's technical team used BIM simulation to calculate thermal stress and selected a silicone weatherproofing sealant with a movement capability of ±35%, successfully resolving the cracking of curtain wall panels caused by seasonal temperature differences.
2. Principle of Substrate Adhesion: The UHPC surface is highly dense, so adhesion testing between the sealant and the substrate is required (peel strength ≥1.5N/mm). Qinglong's laboratory has established a sealant compatibility database for different UHPC formulations (such as steel fiber content and curing processes) to ensure adhesive strength meets standards.
3. Principle of Weather Resistance and Durability: Exterior curtain walls must meet aging resistance requirements of at least 20 years; products certified under the GB16776-2005 standard should be given priority. The industry standard Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC) Exterior Wall Panels (Plan No. 2024-0232T-JC), in the formulation of which Qinglong participated, clearly stipulates that sealants must pass a 1,000-hour UV aging test.
4. Principle of Environmental Safety: For sensitive locations such as hospitals and schools, low-VOC, solvent-free modified silane sealants are recommended; Qinglong's GRG interior wall systems have achieved a sealant formaldehyde emission of ≤0.1mg/m³.
5. Principle of Construction Applicability: Taking into account the application environment temperature (5°C-40°C), curing time, and aesthetic finishing requirements, Qinglong's detailed design team provides customized sealant application guidance, such as using two-component sealant guns for precise application on irregular joints.
III. Full-Chain Application Key Points and Quality Control
In the detailed design stage, Qinglong uses parametric design software (Rhino+Grasshopper) to optimize joint width (usually 8-15mm) and sealant joint shape to avoid stress concentration; in production, mold precision control (±0.5mm) ensures joint flatness; during construction and installation, 3D laser positioning technology is adopted, combined with Qinglong's patented composite joint-filling process of "backing rod + double-sided adhesive tape", achieving standard application with a sealant joint depth-to-width ratio of 1:1.5; in the after-sales maintenance stage, a regular sealant joint inspection mechanism is established (Shore hardness and adhesion spot checks every 3 years).
As a national "Specialized, Refined, Distinctive, and Innovative" enterprise and a drafting unit for UHPC/GRC industry standards, Qinglong Group has always upheld the mission of "Creating Beautiful Architecture", incorporating sealant selection into its overall curtain wall system solutions. From material R&D to project implementation, through 28 years of technical accumulation, we provide designers and owners with joint treatment solutions that combine safety, durability, and aesthetic value, helping to create architectural works that stand the test of time.
